Ah yes, i'm an 80s/early 90s kid and mid-late 90s teen who grew up with this show back then, i had merchandise and all that and even enjoyed rewatching it when it came out on Toonami when i was a teen when they had cool anime. Cheetara was one of my first crushes and this show got me and other 80s kids into furry fans, Lion-O was one of my heroes and Snarf i kind of thought he was funny.
Well, most of the hero team-up shows of the 70s and 80s had animal sidekicks. The ThunderCats had Snarf (and later Snarfer), the Super Friends had junior sidekicks with a pet for each pair (with Wendy and Marvin it was Wonder Dog and with the Wonder Twins it was Gleek), Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends had Ms. Lion, the SilverHawks had Tallyhawk (and others), with He-Man & the M.O.T.U., it was Cringer/Battle Cat, and animals were even part of the G.I. Joe team.
everyone wants a movie of this franchise...but it sickens me to think of the likely possibility that they will screw it up and make a mediocre movie. Part of the charm of this show was the fact that it did have an 80s aesthetic. They need to really think hard about the writing and deisgn in order to encapsulate/reproduce that almost outerwordly flawlessness that a lot of these 80s animated shows had ..the very thing that made us wake up @ 6am to watch these same programs on TV
How about a Mocap animated movie in the tradition of Beowulf, TinTin and Avatar? i'd love to see that with WETA doing the animation for it and they did it outstandingly with TinTIn, Rise of the Apes, Lord of the Rings and Avatar
They actually did make a movie in 1986 and adapted it into a five-part continuation of the series in 1987. It was called "ThunderCats! HO! It featured most of the ThunderCats' enemies from the first season teaming up against the feline heroes when Mumm-Ra got wind of three more Thunderians crashing on Earth (called Third Earth in this series). Mumm-Ra and the mutants (including Rat-A-Ro) were joined by Hammerhand and the Berserkers, as well as Capt. Shiner.
