No-No-No- Do not go! I and my family were there for 2 days last year digging ourselves stupid and found nothing,lol. If you read the history of the mine it has been worked through several times by big mining companies. The dirt they turn over and over contains nothing except what they SALT into the ground, lol.
They plow the dirt to shake the diamonds down to where you can't find them. The park has been turned into a scam. rules and policies have been put in place to stop you from finding diamonds. now visitors buy them off the internet and pretend to find them at the park. Don't be fooled by the CRATER OF DIAMONDS SCAM.
I worked here for three years and if you go be ready for a disapointment. It is a flat top area that you must dig in the open. Its a small area and a lot of work. Yes diamods are naturally here. The state would loose money if they came in and manufactured the diamonds themselves, but its perfect as a park.
Apart of one of two of my jobs while working here at the Park was to make sure that the surface area was turned every two weeks. A tractor goes along the large area bringing up new soil and diamonds. It is proven that from the surface to about sixteen feet below contains diamonds, the white, brown, and the yellow bird in all different sizes. While sifting the soil you will also find jasper, quartz, ash clumps, and kimberlite. Diamond are slippery and best found in the "wet sifting method."

Looks like most people sift through dirt, is that actually decomposed lamporite? Or are they just dumb?
Are people just sifting through the same depleted overburden over and over for decades?
Can you bring highbankers/jigs etc for concentration?
