Better to be a free kid than an enslaved man. I also reject the propaganda you've bought into when it comes to the word "kid". You think the bondage you've been sold into makes you an adult, and anyone who refuses to put on those chains is a kid.
But if i don't acquire enough money to build that hotel on Baltic, how is the construction worker who's now out of a job supposed to feed his children? Should he become a farmer, (on land he has no way to purchase) so that when his child gets the flu he has to hope the town doctor needs a goat this week? Or hope that Vicks makes NyQuil for free? At least when little Suzie tops out at 107F instead of wishing he had managed to acquire money he can remind himself she's just going back in the box.
@WilliamCloonan Bend and twist the words the way you want my friend, but the true message remains the same. Take the part about his grandmother being destroyed by his lust for acquisition. That is what this message is fighting; some politicians and elitist raping and pillaging the masses to acquire more and more because there is no point in which it is enough to stop. This is not about being a hippie and living in the dirt. It's about living within your means, and that there's more to life.
@souprcheff I'm sorry i was just carrying a bad analogy to it's logical extreme. Comparing life to monopoly is ridiculous because it does just all go back in the box, there's no future generation of monopolians to consider. This is real life where people, usually motivated by making more money than you've decided they need, are responsible for innovation. Feel free to disagree with me, but first go find someone with AIDS who's on AZT and ask them if they think drug companies have too much money.
@WilliamCloonan I do understand what you're trying to say. However, most people that are motivated solely by money do what makes money, not what improves lives. Many researchers, teachers, and farmers make terrible money, but big oil tycoons, Wall Street execs, and big bank owners make more money than some small towns near me. If you want to understand the bigger picture of what this message is, watch Zeitgiest. Google "Planned Obsolescence" and the impact of consumerism on the environment.
That "box" is the world you live in. So be damned glad that previous generations have put stuff back in the box. Be glad they went out and made stuff they didn't use.
Be glad they wanted as many "houses" and "hotels" as they could.
@jeffiek At what point in time did lust for capitalism and money bring us love? A family? Friendship? Where did they INVENT those things with money? Ah, they didn't. Those are the true gifts of life. Life cannot be supported without work, and building a society is part of that work. I'm not saying we should abandon money, it is necessary. This message is saying the end-all-be-all, the final goal in life, should NOT be acquisition of money and power, that there is more to life than that.
I'm just observing that those that have different views, the "monopoly players" in life, are the ones we owe our standard of living to. Strangely, what they did for themselves did not die with them, we're enjoying it now.
That is way to depressing, my goal is to find immortality and explore the never ending space. I'm not planning to go back to the box, there is still so much things to see and so much things to find.
Capitalism must fall at some point. Because more and more people are paid to do nothing but decide in an elaborate game who gets the stuff machines make.
What will be left to do is just research, developement and repairs of those machines.
The easiest SHOULD be to get a moderate amount of money. Enough to enjoy life.
It seems that currently you can either have too little or get caught in a never ending loop of increasing your income. Now, one can't enjoy life for being too busy or too poor.
Amazing! I was THERE when he delivered this message! At Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington, Il. I immediately got the recording and played it many times thereafter for friends and family.
It's not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game. What matters is what you do while you are alive. Sure, after I'm gone, none of the THINGS I have will have any further relevance to me (since I will no longer exist), but it feels good knowing that I can pass along those things to someone who survives me so they can enjoy them. The nice thing about Monopoly is that you can play it again and again. Life, however, gives you one shot.
It might go back in the box but you are forced to play regardless... and it's a much more enjoyable game when you are collecting the rent instead of paying it.
I think this video is going to miss a lot of people and even have the opposite effect intended. While one huge takeaway could be to reflect on and rethink how you're living, a lot of people will see this and say "Oh well that's not me. I know what matters. It's XYZ" where XYZ is family, or friends, or "living life to the fullest" (adventure.travel.pleasure.BS), etc, giving them confidence in their way-of-life, meanwhile forgetting how utterly "material"-oriented they are.
The problem with this is.......there is nothing beyond the box. The box is The Box. If you understand this, the box doesn't seem so bad....I'll take Boardwalk.
@thapoopscoopa My thinking says either I'll be disappointed I spent my life for myself only to realize I was wrong in the afterlife, or there is no afterlife so I don't think or feel at all and it doesn't matter anyway...
You insane Zeitgeist followers do realize that you are advocating the abolition of the creation of things that allow you to discuss your dumb ideas such as ISPs, Microsoft, Apple Computers, etc. Without their profit driven ingenuity you useful idiots would be discussing the plans for your ridiculous utopia alone in your parents basement. Their profit has produced so many advancements that nimrods like you can hope for their destruction without the slightest bit of irony. Wake the hell up.
@frank1978ffm I dont know what your on about really, re the Zeitegeist shite, but I can see a flawed argument. open source non commerce software will always be superior to commerical closed source software. Apple and Microsoft dont have the best or most creative products, theyve just got a well-known name/brand because their business is structured around brand.
try not to think "profit driven" but "motivated", in certain cultures (that people think are the only ones) ppl are only profit driven.
@frank1978ffm Profit doesnt produce anything, especially ingenuity. Its just a carrot on a stick. If something is pleasant or useful to anyone then theres inscentive, but the idea that we couldnt of developed any tools or technology without profit is fucking ridiculous. All the materials and knowledge exist independantly from the imaginary values that are used to lead you donkeys around. Your argument is weak. We can communicate electronically with the use of human built tools, that is all.
What a load of crap. So I am supposed to somehow feel guilty for trying to do what I can to earn enough money so that my family can live in comfort and enjoyment?
@frank1978ffm That is not the point! If you feel that earning enough money to provide comfort and enjoyment for you family is what you want to do with your life, DO IT! This video is just trying to open the eyes of those who are at a dead end job working ridiculous hours for the wrong reasons. You have a good reason!
This video has truly opened my eyes to many things, not that i've never thought from this perspective before but the presentation of the ideas in this story have made all the difference...
@Winterwolf00 He does. I wasn't saying that he was unintelligent or anything. I just thought that it's interesting that zeitgeist wants to distance itself from religion, but still picks out stuff from it that suits it's needs. Quite postmodernistic in that sense, even though most of it's outspoken philosophy is quite modernistic.
The difference between Ortberg and zeitgeist here, i think, is that Ortberg is talking about metaphysics (christianity), whilst zeitgeist sees a flaw in our economy
What matters to me is getting to know the world, travelling, experiencing the widest range of emotions and adventures as humanly possible. Yet the sad thing is that money is necessary to achieve these things. Money is not they key in life, but it damn sure can make living it easier, so to say that it is not important at all can be a mistake.
It's true, it all goes back in the box... but what we do NOW in this life can live on forever. We, the 'transition generations,' are the most important generations to ever walk this earth. We will determine whether or not humanity makes it to a 'civilized' status. We are not there yet... Michio Kaku explains this eloquently here:
It's true, it all goes back in the box... but what we do NOW in this life can live on forever. We, the 'transition generations,' are the most important generations to ever walk this earth. We will determine whether or not humanity makes it to a 'civilized' status. We are not there yet... Michio Kaku explains this eloquently here:
The message is pretty easy if you have more than half a brain: to get, you have to take. To take, someone else has to lose. Once you're dead, nothing you have is yours anymore, and it "all goes back in the box" for someone else to have, for a brief period of time. However, the fact you had to step on so many people to get where you were doesn't just get erased. You screwed things up for others, and what has it really done for the world?
@roch1786 God being real or not real is sort of irrellevant (I'm an atheist). When you die you're dead and the things you had no longer matter. The point of this video is not to say you can't or shouldn't aquire wealth, it's to remind you to stop and think about what really matters to you. Let's say you constantly work and aquire wealth for your whole life and become fabulously rich. Then you die. I suppose your kids will like their inheritance!
The only point of wealth accumulation is to drive increased reproductive advantage. A person who uses their wealth to buy toys is failing in comparison to the person who uses their wealth to have dozens of offspring. Descendants are forever yours. Without descendants, all the tangibles you acquire mean nothing, for there's no part of you to enjoy it after you're gone.
That doesn't change the fact that people are trying to defeat death. Some think it will eventually come through technology. I'm not saying this of course to encourage the OCD people who consume and only care about material possessions. There is more to life than BMWs, big houses, and being better than your neighbor.
Im trying to get enough money to where I dont have to work anymore, or very little, to maintain a certain level of lifestyle, but my ultimate goal is time though. Time to do things that I consider important: ie time with kid, spouse, quality time alone, possibly volunteer work. If there were another way to get that time and keep lifestyle Im open to suggestions.

Oh. my. god, I hadn't realised that all the things I owned wouldn't follow me into the afterlife, guess i'll give away all my money and go die poor on the streets instead of keeping some money for financial stability and buying things to enjoy with that money when I have enough.
@silversobe All it's saying is that you WILL lose everything. You don't get to keep anything after you die. At the same time, though, it's not necessarily stated as a bad thing. At the end point, you will have nothing, but you did have things before that, so unless you value that end point infinitely more than anything else, it's not so bad.
I agree with silversobe, it can make life easy but easy is not always happy.
If I ask a mountain climber if he would rather take the lift with the air con on and 3 course meal on the way up I know what he would say. Hard times can be good times, this is what "older people" mean when they say the good old days, yes they may not have been easy but happy. you will learn
@ethanflys The video is saying it doesnt want you to get caught up in material possessions. Your not the only person on earth and not everyone has it good. Put some time and effort into things that will carry on even after your gone.
@ethanflys the statement he is trying to make is exactly what Jesus said in Matthew 16:26 (For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul?) the houses the cars clothes the degrees mean nothing to God what will it profit you if you get everything you ever desired everything you ever wanted but you die and you not only die but you die and go to hell so material things mean nothing in the end but what matters most is having
@ethanflys You missed the point entirely, its saying that the entire system is stupid. Not that you should give away your money. It's saying that money is virtual, fake, ethereal and there are more important things then playing this stupid game we call life. Its a metaphor, perhaps you should open your mind a little. But I think you just use your sarcasm as a defense mechanism to cling to the reality your super ego created for your fragile mind.

@Dexter103Morgan Gotta say, awesome name. Yeh and my comment was the best part of a year ago so I don't remember exactly what the point was to it, I think I was just trying to express that it wasn't as clever as people seem to think. I've heard the concept before and understand it, i'm just not that impressed. I may have been drunk whilst commenting, it was during my first year of uni.
The game of life changes continuously at every level -- eventually beyond recognition -- until the game itself possibly halts in trillions of years. It's up to each of us to find some purpose in this game. Perhaps it's good enough to simply maximize one's pleasure in life, including the pleasure of participating in society among family, friends, companions, and colleagues. I doubt it's the case that obsessively greedy people are generally happy; maybe it's a brain imbalance like depression.
Simple way out. The Technocracy technate design. That gets rid of the political price system. The political Price System is the contract society method of doing business.
A contract method is a throwback to the 25th. century or so B.C.
Mostly that system is destroyed by technology.
Energy conversion changed the Rules of the Game in a Price System.
Purchasing power is no longer maintained with Adam Smith econo method.
@jordancastro1-What if your children die? Happens all the time. Then you are back to losing the game. In this system there are only temporary winners.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
It doesn't go back in the box. You win the game of life by providing for your kids, raising them the right way, and having them pass those on to their kids and so on.
"what matters?"-Love.but humans have become so blinded by their materialism&ego-ambition of success, that even if they founnd Love in front of them, waiting 4 them, they would kick her, rushing onto their work....the same person might say "ah,how precious love is,i wish i'd found love"yet at the same time he does vth possible to through away every little fragment that reminds Love..cause when you're gone,it hurts 2 look back...sad.all we need is Love
@Freshtymer I Agree a lot of things should be but they are not for a reason, consumerism keeps the rich getting richer and the surfs working. They teach religion so you conform and learn you to follow
they send you to school to lean to be a slave to the economy and keep the cogs turning, do not resist the plan we have for you when the state takes you from your parents when the birth is registered as your fiction,
So technically, even if you "win" the game, you will always still lose because all of the things that you have "owned" (which really isn't yours) evenntually goes back in the box? You can't win anything because you're not going to "own" them forever? So the main question is, what's the point of trying to "win" or "own" something that you're not really going to "own" something forever?
@silversobe Well what does matter? Why would relationships matter as when you die the people you've cared about go to the box too? Money_gives_pleasure. Or who doesn't like good food or a comfortable bed?
When you die, its all over. Doesn't matter if you're in love or if you have tons of good friends. Nothing matters.

WilliamCloonan 8 months ago
@WilliamCloonan Bend and twist the words the way you want my friend, but the true message remains the same. Take the part about his grandmother being destroyed by his lust for acquisition. That is what this message is fighting; some politicians and elitist raping and pillaging the masses to acquire more and more because there is no point in which it is enough to stop. This is not about being a hippie and living in the dirt. It's about living within your means, and that there's more to life.
souprcheff 8 months ago
@souprcheff
This film clip IS NOT about politicians. They do not live by buying and selling. They live by TAKING.
jeffiek 8 months ago
@souprcheff I'm sorry i was just carrying a bad analogy to it's logical extreme. Comparing life to monopoly is ridiculous because it does just all go back in the box, there's no future generation of monopolians to consider. This is real life where people, usually motivated by making more money than you've decided they need, are responsible for innovation. Feel free to disagree with me, but first go find someone with AIDS who's on AZT and ask them if they think drug companies have too much money.
WilliamCloonan 8 months ago
@WilliamCloonan I do understand what you're trying to say. However, most people that are motivated solely by money do what makes money, not what improves lives. Many researchers, teachers, and farmers make terrible money, but big oil tycoons, Wall Street execs, and big bank owners make more money than some small towns near me. If you want to understand the bigger picture of what this message is, watch Zeitgiest. Google "Planned Obsolescence" and the impact of consumerism on the environment.
souprcheff 8 months ago
That "box" is the world you live in. So be damned glad that previous generations have put stuff back in the box. Be glad they went out and made stuff they didn't use.
Be glad they wanted as many "houses" and "hotels" as they could.
You would still be in caves if they didn't.
jeffiek 9 months ago
@jeffiek At what point in time did lust for capitalism and money bring us love? A family? Friendship? Where did they INVENT those things with money? Ah, they didn't. Those are the true gifts of life. Life cannot be supported without work, and building a society is part of that work. I'm not saying we should abandon money, it is necessary. This message is saying the end-all-be-all, the final goal in life, should NOT be acquisition of money and power, that there is more to life than that.
souprcheff 8 months ago
@souprcheff I happen to agree.
I'm just observing that those that have different views, the "monopoly players" in life, are the ones we owe our standard of living to. Strangely, what they did for themselves did not die with them, we're enjoying it now.

JamesMorlan 10 months ago

Their profit has produced so many advancements that nimrods like you can hope for their destruction without the slightest bit of irony. Wake the hell up.
frank1978ffm 11 months ago
@frank1978ffm I dont know what your on about really, re the Zeitegeist shite, but I can see a flawed argument. open source non commerce software will always be superior to commerical closed source software. Apple and Microsoft dont have the best or most creative products, theyve just got a well-known name/brand because their business is structured around brand.
try not to think "profit driven" but "motivated", in certain cultures (that people think are the only ones) ppl are only profit driven.
JTickett 11 months ago
@frank1978ffm Profit doesnt produce anything, especially ingenuity. Its just a carrot on a stick. If something is pleasant or useful to anyone then theres inscentive, but the idea that we couldnt of developed any tools or technology without profit is fucking ridiculous. All the materials and knowledge exist independantly from the imaginary values that are used to lead you donkeys around. Your argument is weak. We can communicate electronically with the use of human built tools, that is all.

You screwed things up for others, and what has it really done for the world?

roch1786 1 year ago
@roch1786 God being real or not real is sort of irrellevant (I'm an atheist). When you die you're dead and the things you had no longer matter. The point of this video is not to say you can't or shouldn't aquire wealth, it's to remind you to stop and think about what really matters to you. Let's say you constantly work and aquire wealth for your whole life and become fabulously rich. Then you die. I suppose your kids will like their inheritance!
cloudhopper10 1 year ago
The only point of wealth accumulation is to drive increased reproductive advantage. A person who uses their wealth to buy toys is failing in comparison to the person who uses their wealth to have dozens of offspring. Descendants are forever yours. Without descendants, all the tangibles you acquire mean nothing, for there's no part of you to enjoy it after you're gone.

That doesn't change the fact that people are trying to defeat death. Some think it will eventually come through technology. @ethanflys Its just stating that one shouldn't base their life's pursuits and enjoyment on material gains alone.
silversobe 1 year ago 68
@silversobe All it's saying is that you WILL lose everything. You don't get to keep anything after you die. At the same time, though, it's not necessarily stated as a bad thing. At the end point, you will have nothing, but you did have things before that, so unless you value that end point infinitely more than anything else, it's not so bad.

If I ask a mountain climber if he would rather take the lift with the air con on and 3 course meal on the way up I know what he would say. Hard times can be good times, this is what "older people" mean when they say the good old days, yes they may not have been easy but happy. you will learn

@Freshtymer I Agree a lot of things should be but they are not for a reason, consumerism keeps the rich getting richer and the surfs working. They teach religion so you conform and learn you to follow
they send you to school to lean to be a slave to the economy and keep the cogs turning, do not resist the plan we have for you when the state takes you from your parents when the birth is registered as your fiction,
ukbands 1 year ago
So technically, even if you "win" the game, you will always still lose because all of the things that you have "owned" (which really isn't yours) evenntually goes back in the box? You can't win anything because you're not going to "own" them forever? So the main question is, what's the point of trying to "win" or "own" something that you're not really going to "own" something forever?
RealRacer2442 2 years ago 11
