Have been looking for this video for a long time, been listening to this version for a long time, probably 15 years, make's me melancholic in a very sad way.
Fucking hell. In 9 mins and 58 secs Bruce is able to articulate what most people can't in their whole lives and he can break your heart at the same time. The one and only Boss.
IT's a great song , but I think the story before it would be more apt if it proceeded "Independance Day' , I saw him in 1980, when he told a short, simple, aparently contemperanious story about rummaging in his aunts attic prior to Thanksgiving dinner, just a week before the concert, and finding an old photo of his dad from when he'd just returned from WW2. I'm a guy and it had me and all 3 of my friends wipeing tears away by the time he got 1 minute into the song.
So close to what many of us experienced. My 17 yr old has been letting his hair grow.......I can't say much can I? Thanks for this, it really hits home for me......
I love this video.. It reminds me of my father. When I was little, 7 years, he played that song and i stood on his feet with my arms around him, and he translated every word, Bruce said, for me.
My favorite version, I can relate to much of his story, he brings back the mood of the times, and the song is perfect, tne melancholy music and a variation of the universal story of most youth in that day.
Thank you so much for posting this fr9dd9. I saw the Boss at Glastonbury last Saturday. He played this and, I'm not ashamed to say, I was nearly in tears. My dad died last year and this song, and Bruce, for a huge amount of reasons, really touches the bone. This has been, without a doubt, the best 9mins and 58secs I have spent on youtube.
@WillisBRock My dad also died almost two years ago.. and this was one of his favorite songs from one of his favorite musicians. He used to play his own harmonica along with it.. it was good memories.. this is good stuff..
@WillisBRock Bruce really reminds me of my Dad aswell and although he is still alive i just know Bruce will always remind me of him. I know how you feel about being in tears.
my dad died in 2009, tears rolling down my face as I listen now in 2011, haven't listened to this in months, memories flooding back, covered in goosebumps, lump of cold concrete in my throat. Awesome speech, awesome song. Take it easy, man, peace RB@U
i used to listen to this version of the river on casette that my dad had made but i lost it he cant remember where he got this version from??any help?
Hi! Hoow are you? My name is Christian and i write you because I want know that is all that Bruce said before that starts the song The River, for what little I can understand some words seem to be very emotional.
this is a story he has told many times over in comcert - it dates back to before the release of "The River" Back in the days where he was both storyteller and musician. Great stuff
Great job getting this on here , BEAUTIFUL :-)

When I was growing up, me and my dad used to go at it all the time, over almost anything.
But uh, I used to have really long hair, way down past my shoulders.
I was 17 or 18, oh man he used to hate it.
And we got to where we were fighting so much that I was spending alot of time out of the house
and in the summertime it wasn't so bad 'cuz it was warm and my friends were out,
but in the winter, i remember staying in downtown where it gets so cold

and when the wind would blow i had this phonebooth that i used to stand in
and i used to call my girl like for hours at a time just talking to her all night long.
and finally i get my nerve up to go home,
and i'd stand there in the driveway and he'd be waiting for me in the kitchen
and i'd tuck my hair down in my collar and i'd walk in, and then call me back to sit down with him
and the first thing he'd allways ask me was what did i think i was doing with myself
and the worst part about it was,
BelgianGurista 2 years ago
I remember i got in a motorcycle accident once and i laid on the bed and they had a barber
come in and cut my hair, and man, i can remember telling him that i hated him and that i
would never ever forget him.
And he used to tell me, "Man, I can't wait 'till the army gets you, when the army gets you,
they're gonna make a man outta you. They're gonna cut all that hair off and they'll make a man outta you.
And this was in i guess '68, you know there was a lotta guys from the neighbourhood going to

Vietnam. I remember the drummer in my first band coming over to my house with his marine uniform on
and saying that he was going and he didn't know where it was.
And alot of guys went, and alot of guys didn't come back. And the lot that came back, weren't
the same anymore.
And I remember the day I got my draft notice, I hit it from my folks and 3 days before my physical
me and my friends went out and we stayed up all night. and we got on the bus to go that morning
and man ....... scared.
BelgianGurista 2 years ago
I remember coming home after being gone for three days and walking in the kitchen and my mother
and father were sitting there and my dad said "where you been?" I said "I went to take my physical"
He says "what happened?" I said "They didn't take me" and he said "That's good".
sorry for any misspelling or (lack of) punctuation and it's probably upside down....:s
