In fact, the whole gothic metal genre was pretty much founded on the idea of "beauty and the beast" vocals like these - growls or rough male vocals, combined with soft, soprano female vocals. Just look at the Liv Kristine-era of Theatre of Tragedy!

@crimrose All you have to do is go to wikipedia and type in "Gothic Metal" and you'd quickly see that you're incorrect. It was not at all founded on the "beauty and the beast" vocals at all. Theatre of Tragedy coined it after bands like Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride originated the genre.

And the people complaining about the growls - you've obviously never heard any doom/gothic/death metal before at all. :)

It all has growls, they definitely add a certain something to this type of music. Sure, growls don't fit as well in Nightwish (where Anette usually sings), but Nightwish is symphonic metal, not gothic/doom/death, so it doesn't make as much sense. (NW used to have growls, though...)

I actually really like this song, it's really different for Anette to feature in it. Kinda weird how they don't mention in the title that it features her though, since it'd probably give them a bit of a publicity boost for their band.

No, I don't listen to them much. But I've had my share of growling voices in the 80's, 90's and whatevs. For me, it should be a scarce resource. But it all depends on the song. I find the growling on Isis and Cult of Luna perfect everytime,ie. And, to some extent, Tiamat, but I wish some of their songs didn't have them.

This is a great song. All I'm saying is the growling here is the low point for me.

I've actually heard the new album once. Kai Hahto had a album pre-listening last weekend in my (and his) hometown.. and i have to say that i't won't dissapoint you if you really like Swallow the sun. All songs aren't done the same way as this one, and some of the songs reminded me a lot of older StS. Offcourse i've only heard it once, but i was mesmerized.
