Cheers for this. The rules provided with the game are really shitty but you and your charming son(?) sorted us right out - so thanks for taking the time to make/upload the video matey.
Check out this tool for designing your kingdom the next time you play. If you design properly this thing makes for some interesting sets or at least just helps with randomizing if that's all you want.
Go to chrome apps and search for dominion kingdom builder.
I have heard great things about this game and would like to eventually get it, but then I feel it will be kind of difficult to learn how to play because I have such a short attention span when reading the directions.
@Hujak100 Even though we read a lot of rulebooks as part of reviewing games, I'm glad we didn't learn Dominion that way. Since it's the first deck-building game we played I think it might have taken us a while to figure it out from just the rules. Hopefully our video helps though.
@SirFakeName The discard pile is temporary. You discard the cards you play to your own discard pile. Once you go through your deck, you take your discard pile and shuffle it and it becomes your draw pile. So the whole game you're building your deck of cards. Buying cards and using them as you continue to build.
@TheBoardGameFamily One minor quibble from watching this video - when you buy (or otherwise gain) a card, place it immediately in the discard pile and not on top of the other cards in your playing area. Usually it makes no difference, but (for example) if you gain a card via one action then play a second action which tells you to draw more cards and the draw deck is empty, then the reshuffled discard pile should include the card you've just gained, but not the other cards on the table.
@mathmethman The reason I point this out: I have a friend who just piles all his cards up without due care over which are in the play area and which are supposed to be on the discard pile. I have been unsuccessful in trying to get him to be more precise. And it hasn't so far spoiled the game, so I'm probably quibbling about nothing!
Thank you SO much. I am a visual person and, despite reading the directions five or six times, I was still a little lost on how the action cards were integrated into the game : /. I am very glad that I stumbled upon this to clear up the confusion :D. Thanks again!
@FlindyFlannaFones That's how we felt the first time too. We were lucky to be at a game convention though - so when we sat with confused looks on our faces while reading the rules, a passer-by stopped and sat down to teach us how to play. Then it went really smooth.
You did an excellent job, young man. Our family should have watched your video before we attempted to play. But now we understand it much better, thanks to you!
My hat off to your son. You must be very proud of having such a lovely boy! My son is more of a sportsman. My games are gathering dust. It is quite depressing!!!
after several games of dominion i've never opened w/ 5-0.

@Hujak100 it's actually fairly easy. Once you've learned the basics, all the rules you need are on the cards themselves

What amazes me is that this young boy can explain the game BETTER than the majority of grown-ups can! Nice job!

How did he get his Thief card back from the discard pile?

@mathmethman That's correct - unless the action/card you played says to do something different with it.

Dominion is a lot of fun, and actually gets better - although more involved - with the expansions. Nice review.
