perhaps death is the entrance to a time-symmetrical universe in which a person is born old and dies a baby. i know it sounds like sci-fi and bizarre concepts but if you truly think about the origin of the universe this could theoretically happen.
@ajhrockerboy6 Sounds like the film "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button". If my work pans out, the Universe is not time-symmetrical. I have a video about that topic here, search for "Time reversal and spin"
At this time, I don't understand the origin of the Universe. That is an open, hard question.
Jesus is coming soon. Look at the Sumerian tablets .....how did they know about the fallen angels ..they talk about things our scientist have only recently discovered.
@Itzmrrtis Do you wish to go out on a limb and define "soon"? I recall hearing that in the single digit AD years, they thought Jesus would be back soon..
How did god create the earth in 6 days? When the concept of time is a fabrication of humans. Why did he rest as well, as he is almighty and has no limitations. He knows absolutely every murmur that has ever and will ever occur and he knows the outcome of all events past and future. Yet he gets jealous, takes rests, and has to come to the conclusion that light, and animals, and human kind that he created was "good" God is a massive contradicition. as god was and is continuosly fabricated by US
@longfootbuddy In another part of my definition of God, there is the bit about the door between the past and the future passes through you and I. That is what makes us significant. Compared to the Earth, Jupiter, the Sun, the Milky Way galaxy, our local cluster of galaxies, and everything we can spot with our telescopes, the message of cosmology is that we cannot fathom how trivial our mass is in comparison.
Hmm, well I thought for most people the point in having a god is that, despite all the physical odds, they can think that their life and their actions actually have a great lasting significance. I.e. moral actions in the religious pseudo world, no matter how little physical impact they have, are more significant than any large scale physical process.
I don't get what you gain from your definition.
btw, the Dirac delta actually goes up to infinity. Even better I guess.
Classical and quantum physics work together to create a complete description.
Physics has an answer to what happened "in the beginning": we don't know at this time. The caveat, "at this time", might change do to the work of ordinary people skilled in the scientific arts. I have an equation that might be relevant to big bang cosmology. The equation represents a new constant velocity solution to classical gravity. I am not skilled enough at this time to apply it to the Universe. Bummer.
I see you have almost no support in the comments.I really don't know what happened with all the people who share similar ideas with you,but here is one of them.I know that your interests are in physics, not in debating the existence of God as a conscious entity,so here are some suggestions where you can refer people, who want to do those kind of debates, to:(these youtube users dissect the problem from all perspective)
AronRa (morality, history, paleontology)-- to be continued
And I would like to add one more point with regard to the video. I think it is not accurate if everyone have their own definition. In Genesis, human beings have fallen. So we can't really trust ourselves, and we need to lean on the revelation of God in the Bible to define who God is. I know you're much older, experienced, intelligent and educated than me and you might look down, but these are very important matters to be voiced out. Religion is between life and death.
Rest assured, I don't look down on anyone. I do realize we will never agree. Science, particularly biology, is all about the struggle between life and death. Nature is both harsher and creative with respect to life and death. There are seeds that can do nothing for a thousand years, then come to life. There are baby worms that eat their way through there mother to go free. I am a skeptic, so cannot trust myself, there is always more the scientific process can teach me. Good luck.
I wouldn't be able to sum up everything in this limited comment, but shortly, its the beauty to see that everything falls in a coherent manner.I started to understand why things are the way they are after I believe. Now I have reasons to explain historical events and other phenomenas which otherwise I can't explain if I hadn't believe. There are so many, perhaps meanwhile you can pick Lee Strobel books for a start, I liked them very much and I think they're quite scientific.
The scientific method can drill into the details of the absurd beauty of the Universe far more so than religion. That is quantifiable. Few realize that bacteria do a biased random walk based on a law of diffusion - heavy math by a single cell. I collect these facts which are the result of observing and questioning. Religion is far too focused on people. Rocks, dirt, gas, and of course light have so many amazing details that only the scientific method has provided, not scripture.
Yea but the point is not which is more beautiful between science and scripture, but rather, I can also see beauty in the coherence of Christianity, that indicates it is the truth. The Bible was written by approx 40 authors over a period of 2000 years but they show coherence. In Genesis, animal was slaughtered when Adam sinned. It is a 'sign' of sacrifice, is consistent with the cruxifixion.
The redemption through the blood of Christ is also coherent with the story of Moses where those who smears the blood of the lamb on the door will be passed and not die.
In the Bible there are symmetry too. Adam sinned in the garden of Eden because he does things based on his own will. Jesus, the 'second Adam', through whom all were cleansed, said at the garden of Gethsemane 'let Thy will be done' before his death. There are many more if you would dig deeper. Its not beauty that matter, its Truth
There are people who like to make a game out of finding logical inconsistencies in the Bible. With 40 authors, it is an easy game to play. No American takes the Bible literally. John Edwards admitted to committing adultery. The Bible says explicitly that adulterers should be stoned. Fortunately, no good Christian has followed the clear directions from the Bible on this point.
@sweetser well, Jesus also tells people to adhere to the laws of the country they live in. It really was an interesting religious movement when you look at it ... that is before it went mainstream.
Moses didn't exist. The publication in recent times of many studies by archaeology in the holy land has been compiled into a consensus on the history. The bible mentions many places and settlements, the archaeology in none of these support the biblical account. It is as simple as that. no pottery, no settlements. Solomon was king of Judah not Israel. The old testament was written in 500BC, it is propaganda, a fiction in preparation for a war, which it never fought as Josiah was killed by Egypt
The consensus in archaeology is that the old testament was written in one generation by 4 authors in 500BC in the time of king Josiah. It was a fiction by the state of Judah, In preparation for an invasion of Israel, a Canaanite state, all through history. There was no such thing as a Hebrew nation.
Seriously. not a single shard of pottery has ever been found to support the biblical account. A completely different history existed,a polytheistic world til 500bc Prof Filkenstein,'Bible unearthed'
As an analogy, why do physicists believe they can unify the forces of nature? They can't prove that it can be done (unless by trying to unify it of course). But they have a real good indicator that it can be done (thus it makes them striving forward to prove it), that is, they already unify some forces, though not all. Thus, it is reasonable to believe, if there exist indicators that your belief is true. Of course this is just an analogy. For my case, I see likewise indicators in Christianity.
It is my scientific belief the law of gravity and light should be unified. This directs where I do research. I have a unified field theory that makes a testable prediction. So far, no physicists have expressed interest in my work. Because my proposal is so specific, I do work to promote testing it.
First of all, you pointed out rightly that a belief isn't provable, and you can't confirm it with experiments, for if it can be confirmed, it is not called a belief anymore. I agreed but I'd rather think of it as a more analog scenario. You can't prove everything 100%. But you can find indications, points that would make your belief more reasonable. Personally I believe in Christianity, and not because I can prove it (exhaustively), but I certainly obtained myself some indicators that its true.
In science there are theories, hypotheses, and areas of study. What we know best is a theory which make multiple predictions, nearly all of which are confirmed. An area of study does not make predictions, like work on strings. In between are hypotheses (they are RARE). Beliefs guide areas of study, but are irrelevant to a mature theory of science.
First of all thanks for the physics videos, liked them so much. Physics is my hobby too though I'm amateur as well (not my major), and certainly way below, not as profound as you. I liked your other videos but I'd rather disagree with regard to certain points, so let me post my comments.
This was a brilliant and extremely pleasurable video to watch. Your commentary is both astute, approachable, and also inspirational. This was also a very personal subject, so I appreciate you sharing it with us, a bunch of relative strangers on the thin slice of life around here. And since I can't be completely serious, lookin' good on the beach Doug. :)
I don't see it as 2 stories, but you can see it that way. The only true reason someone would not want to believe in heaven is because they wouldn't want to believe in hell also.
I think it's all perspective at this point, but at some point in the future, every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
What from your understanding of nature makes you think heaven is not believable? Is evolution believable?-many in science believe it, but it is impossible.
Nature is logically consistent. We have figured out an impressive number of things about Nature, but still have some tricky issues to understand, like how the Universe began. Science will make progress on that issue by people practiced the the physics arts. I look forward to the next steps in physics. The Bible is not going to change, and I personally do not accept two creation stories.
Bow? Don't bet on it. JC gave me a strong backbone.
you can say you can't believe the Bible as the ultimate source of truth, but that doesn't change the fact that's it's true. If you aren't gonna truly study it, and instead find myth errors that others supposedly have already found, you are getting them from an untrue source. I would be very suprised if you even really read that much of the Bible, let alone the truth about why u are here on the earth. Jesus died for sin, and he wants all to come to him and turn from thier sins.
You are assuming the Bible is the book to look at. Other religions base their perspective on books that never mention Mr. J.
I did read the book of genesis carefully. There are two stories in there that say different things about when man came onto the planet compared to plants and things. This was not second hand info!
Jesus did die. He did think he did it for us. If that gives you hope, good. From my understanding of Nature, the notion of heaven is not believable.
I hope we don't get into an argument about whose good is "bigger" :-) I find most interesting the contrast of the background. I chose a beach I am very familiar with, you almost certainly have not, and will never see, on this planet (our lives are finite).
