I was sitting in the lobby with this band at the McCormick Place hotel about to go eat pizza when I finally asked one of the players what band are they with. He said the Dave Holland band...My mind went to Dave Hollister...I feel so uh...what the word...out of touch. My dad is one of the Impressions & my brother plays bass with some of the best but Im so glad I came here to see just who they are.
i saw meta live in st louis at jazz at the bistro they are absolutely amazing much better in person cool bunch of guys too talked with them for a bit after the show
I think the vibe player is great. So what if he plays out? That argument is pretty old hat at this point-free playing has been around for over forty years. The main point is he is lyrical, inventive and on top of the groove. Fantastic band.
I know others have already maded comments on the time singnature.. but I think it's in 5 all the way through.. its just that they are doing so much metric modulation/hemiola /across-the-barline stuff that it doesn't sound like its in 5 a lot of times.. I can't believe how out they can play rhythmically and still groove like that. how does anyone do it?
so damn funky, real phat stuff, but i must say, the vibraphonist realy does ruin it for me, shudnt start suddenly playing so outside on a clearly very diatonic, funky bassline...
I believe that steve nelson is what offers the advanced language that the horn players play off of when soloing. It is far out, but it's still very relevant.
i dont think so, players lyk potter have their own ideas and language they want to play not immediately be restricted by dictation from the vibes... dont get me wrong, i think it would be great later on when it builds up but not straight from the off...

Vibraphone. But I couldn't agree more: He is definitely not playing the same concert. Seems he did not really understand the rhythm, and just did the usual fasterfasterfaster stuff. Pity.
Man, you really have no idea what this music is about, do you? You should really be ashamed of having said this! Steve Nelson is probably the most genious vibraphonist in the world!
Jesus fucking christ! This Vid should pop up in dictionaries when you look up the word "Groove"! Kilson really kills on this one! He and Holland - sheer congeniality. But man, is that vibes player getting on my nerves....
OMG, not as good as the album version? I have to check that out! I am only now discovering Dave Holland- what an amazing player- this is how I want to play bass. I am totally floored.
I was surprised when I heard Eubanks wrote this. Not because it's too good or anything, but you'd expect it to feature more trombone! Gotta love it none the less.
He usually takes a giant incredible solo between Nelson and Potter (like on the live @ birdland record) but the interview cuts it out for some reason...kind of weird especially since it is his song

Yeah, it is in 5/8! I noticed that at aboubt :48, DH phrased his line kind of weird with those up-beats and he and the drummer got the beat turned-around. I think DH played a bar of 9/8 and they got back together.
dave holland loves to explore layers of free counterpoint since the days with chick corea, kenny wheeler, etc. it's understandable why he wanted a vibraphone: it has a light tone and doesn't make the whole thing too dense. BUT in the video, the entrance of the vibes is totally out of balance and it kind of destroys the ensemble.
I didn't mention he missed his entrance, did I? Out of balance in terms of volume. The balance between bass and drums is perfect, and the very entrance of the vibes is fine, but a few seconds later the volume goes up quite a bit and I think that comes from the mixing board, not the playing itself.
I agree with you--it's a simple mixing issue (too loud on the vibe volume) that continues into the entrance of the horns. Also, in so-doing, it deemphasized the interplay that had started between bass and drums made it more of a solo w/ accompaniment.
i don't think you want to understand what I wrote, but that's ok. And please, don't tell me that I should learn how to appreciate this art. I have been appreciating this kind of art for two decades, if not more.
