    AWESOME!!

  • best video on YouTube !!!

  • Billy was always an amazing drummer even when he was a kid.Have his family for many years.

  • Dave Holland Quartet-Extensions

  • man i could listen to that bass/ drums jam all day

  • anybody knows the saxophonist's name ?

  • @RadioheadaphexZappa

    Sax player is Chris Potter

  • Off the hook!! love it!!

  • Captured Germans on execution

  • Sick!! I had no idea that Dave Holland would be like that...and what a drummer!

  • What a Bass tone, killer groove...

  • i think a documentary needs to be made on chris potter

  • @0:44 Dave Holland looks at Billy Kilson, telling him without words: "that's it, man, let's go..."

    And they flow...

    And @1:10 : "Yeah, we've got it..."

I believe that's what the word "Funk" was invented for...

  • could someone please tell me what kind of tone Dave Holland is getting from his pickup? stringy? body? What?

  • Everything? Including fingers. =P

  • jajajajajajajjaja imaginenese si este ses el batero de judas priest!==?????????????

  • CRACK!

  • I have to said that all musician involved here are very good. I'm bassist an holland is pure groove.

the vibrafonist create a outside atmosfere and the sax solo is great . ALL GROUP IS AMANZING.

  • Billy Kilson is literally spanking war babies with his syncopated drum feel. He is committing murder on his drum kit....

  • dave holland and the drumguy are superb!

funky upright bass for the win :D

  • more than a cool groove. ´masing

  • nate smith is such a sick drummer

  • Read other comments, this ain't Nate Smith.

  • yeah nate smith is sick but thats billy kilson

  • @hinchman12 But Nate is also sick ;-).

  • I was sitting in the lobby with this band at the McCormick Place hotel about to go eat pizza when I finally asked one of the players what band are they with. He said the Dave Holland band...My mind went to Dave Hollister...I feel so uh...what the word...out of touch. My dad is one of the Impressions & my brother plays bass with some of the best but Im so glad I came here to see just who they are.

  • billy killson rocks :o

  • dave holland's playing at the Chicago jazzfest tonight. i can't wait to see him!

  • i saw meta live in st louis at jazz at the bistro they are absolutely amazing much better in person cool bunch of guys too talked with them for a bit after the show

  • Well, I know now why Miles Davis hired him. This is world class music. What an honor for him to say that he played on "Bitches Brew!"

  • There is so much communication between these players, you just know that they smile and laugh a LOT in rehearsal.

  • the vibe player could have had a better "free" solo i think even though it was lyrical you need to have some sence of chord change

  • i thought he had a great sense of chrod change

  • I think the vibe player is great. So what if he plays out? That argument is pretty old hat at this point-free playing has been around for over forty years. The main point is he is lyrical, inventive and on top of the groove. Fantastic band.

  • I know others have already maded comments on the time singnature.. but I think it's in 5 all the way through.. its just that they are doing so much metric modulation/hemiola /across-the-barline stuff that it doesn't sound like its in 5 a lot of times.. I can't believe how out they can play rhythmically and still groove like that. how does anyone do it?

  • no thats the drummer from Judas Priest

  • so damn funky, real phat stuff, but i must say, the vibraphonist realy does ruin it for me, shudnt start suddenly playing so outside on a clearly very diatonic, funky bassline...

  • I believe that steve nelson is what offers the advanced language that the horn players play off of when soloing. It is far out, but it's still very relevant.

  • i dont think so, players lyk potter have their own ideas and language they want to play not immediately be restricted by dictation from the vibes... dont get me wrong, i think it would be great later on when it builds up but not straight from the off...

  • this might be my favorite video on the youtube

  • wh0t about drummer? He is the groovie king!!

  • billy kilson i believe

  • what is the time signature. sounds so crazy!

  • It's in ten

  • Man, you really have no idea what this music is about, do you? You should really be ashamed of having said this! Steve Nelson is probably the most genious vibraphonist in the world!

  • Well I don't want to make things personal but it sounds like you didn't understand the harmonic coherences at all!

  • Either way, they sounded like shit, no matter what he was trying to do. He failed at making the ,"harmonic coherences," sound good.

  • Whatever, I respect your opinion, even if I don't agree with you.

  • BOOM!

  • Unbelievable... Holland is the perfect bassist.

  • Nice to hear funk Jazz on the stand up bass. Dave Holland is great.

  • wow very nice !!!

  • Jesus fucking christ! This Vid should pop up in dictionaries when you look up the word "Groove"! Kilson really kills on this one! He and Holland - sheer congeniality. But man, is that vibes player getting on my nerves....

  • I agree with you in this Groove stuff, but don't criticise Steven Nelson, okay? Listen to his lines, this man is THE mastermind!

  • solo na basie a potem z perką jest zajebiste lecz wibrafonista spartolił sprawę

natomiast jak potem wchodzą dęciaki to jest cudo!! :D

  • drummers dirty

  • listen to thoughs pentonics

  • dave looks like snowbear :)

  • Billy Kilson has to have a wallet that says"bad mutherfucker" on it.

  • Mouhahhhahha Nice one! Pulp fiction is an awesome movie doh'.

  • i have too! fuckin badass. And dave holland and his quintet is damn badass to

  • For some reason Chris Potter has the unbelievable power to keep the listener interested throughout his thoroughly-extended solos.

  • Yeah those damn jazz extended solos. WHY!?!?!?!?

  • more like too fucking short solos.

  • just cheered me up! thats all

  • does anybody know what cymbals and hi hat he uses??

  • Billy's playing Sabian cymbals

  • Comment removed

  • fuck who cares, listen to that groove!!!

  • I went to see him with Herbie Hancock in August. It was brilliant. <3

  • 1:08 drummer is nate smith right? so sick. first time I saw this it blew my mind and it continues to do so.

  • nah its billy kilson. but nate smith is great

  • Whata groove!!! What a Tone!!! Whata Quintet!

  • uhhh excelente!! da que pensar!!!

  • OMG, not as good as the album version? I have to check that out! I am only now discovering Dave Holland- what an amazing player- this is how I want to play bass. I am totally floored.

  • This is so fucking awesome.

  • Waw! Fucking Brilliant!

  • I love the color changes that go on with the horn section

  • gonna try and transcribe this wish me luck

  • I want fucking more!!!!

  • This version is not as good as album version but still amazing . One of the best rhythm sections of all time.

  • This video was ripped from a JVC sound system demo dvd in 2002.

  • Cheers! they really need to release a retail DVD of the quintet from this period...

  • yo is this off a DVD?

  • yeah the triplets at 1:08

    theyre amazingly tight

  • i really dont think they are triplets

    maybe its just me...

  • Two sixteenths and one eighth

  • You're the only one that's said it right

  • isn't his name billy kilson?

  • you're right

  • drummer, you mean? he's something......

  • 1:35 - 1:47

  • dave holland is incredible. and so is his band! chris potter, barry kilson, amazing musicians. i would love to see these guys live.

  • this quintet is by far one of the tightest bands i´ve heard play

  • I was surprised when I heard Eubanks wrote this. Not because it's too good or anything, but you'd expect it to feature more trombone! Gotta love it none the less.

  • He usually takes a giant incredible solo between Nelson and Potter (like on the live @ birdland record) but the interview cuts it out for some reason...kind of weird especially since it is his song

  • i think this is the tightest thing i have ever seen. holland and robinson OMMMGGGGG.

    sooooo goood

    listen to 1:05

  • robinson? who's that?

  • Anyone else think that Potter is just way too big for the alto? He's just playing the crap out of it.

  • billy kilson is the drummer

  • WOw, whats the drummers name?

  • C-Pot = incredible.

  • is that Gary Burton?

  • No, Steve Nelson

  • feio

  • challenging....great group...this is jazzzz

  • 10/9? What is a 9th note? Perhaps you meant 10/8? But it seems it is probably better thought of in 10/4. Though I don't believe the song stays in pure 10/8 the whole song. Odd signature really :) Very hip song.

  • I think there can be a 9th note, but it's better to think of stuff in cycles versus signatures when it comes to odd times.

  • 10/9 ahaha

  • u mean 10/8?

  • Are you talking about time? Because it's in 5/4.

  • yeh there is, its the 2nd the octave higher

  • Yeah, man I forgot that phrases are only allowed to last one measure. I better alert every publishing company that they have 1000's of bad printings.

  • In response to captian 10/9 below.

  • OMG i saw them yesterday Nate Motherfucker Smith! :P

  • This is Billy Kilson on drums. Nate S. came after.

  • What CP does getting out of his solo is rediculous, some time thing, anyone know what he did?

  • its just triplets

  • OMG i will see hodland quintet in two weeks more its a dream come true... im crying

  • I'd give my left nut to play like Holland.

I wonder what he's like on Electric bass.

  • i think they editid out eubanks solo

  • Amazing! Sick Sick Sick. Thanks for posting this!

  • Yeah, it is in 5/8! I noticed that at aboubt :48, DH phrased his line kind of weird with those up-beats and he and the drummer got the beat turned-around. I think DH played a bar of 9/8 and they got back together.

  • It sounds more like 5/4 then 5/8. Not like it matters I'm just geeking out.

  • No, they definitely don't screw up(I thought of it as 10 just because of the phrasing), it's just really disorienting with all the syncopations.

  • No hay como Billy Kilson!!! Es un maestro!!! QUÉ MÉTRICA QUE TIENE BILLY, Y CON QUÉ NATURALIDAD QUE LA LLEVA!!!

  • hell yeah. he can make 5 sound feel like straight up common time.

  • WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!!!

    :o !!!

  • That is hot as hell!!

  • I've see this same group live before in Albuquerque, NM. Amazing!

  • Muito bom! Fusion, Jazz e Samba!!!!!!!!!!

  • Whoa, check out how billy hits his cymbal and about 3:00, haha awesome!

  • dave holland loves to explore layers of free counterpoint since the days with chick corea, kenny wheeler, etc. it's understandable why he wanted a vibraphone: it has a light tone and doesn't make the whole thing too dense. BUT in the video, the entrance of the vibes is totally out of balance and it kind of destroys the ensemble.

  • How is it out of balance? Dave gives him a cue to solo. He makes it very clear he's done and looks over at Steve...

  • I didn't mention he missed his entrance, did I? Out of balance in terms of volume. The balance between bass and drums is perfect, and the very entrance of the vibes is fine, but a few seconds later the volume goes up quite a bit and I think that comes from the mixing board, not the playing itself.

  • I agree with you--it's a simple mixing issue (too loud on the vibe volume) that continues into the entrance of the horns. Also, in so-doing, it deemphasized the interplay that had started between bass and drums made it more of a solo w/ accompaniment.

  • i don't think your ears are very mature. you need to listen more before you decide to judge. and then learn to appreciate this wonderful art.

  • i don't think you want to understand what I wrote, but that's ok. And please, don't tell me that I should learn how to appreciate this art. I have been appreciating this kind of art for two decades, if not more.

  • "Anyone who jumps ship to go play with Chris Botti is a traitor and a bit of a sell-out. Nate kicks ass."

Your an idiot. You get the chance to play in front of thousands and make more money you go for the gig. You no nothing about him or his family/financial situation.

  • dave holland, sublime as usual. robin eubanks, hittin' the bump notes as usual.

  • that "xylophone prick" is steve nelson is he is amazing. Also, to show how stupid you are that's a virbrophone. But this group is my favorite, to bad they ditched billy :(. I's funny, after years of playing mallets steve has a rediculous hunch haha.

  • Anyone who jumps ship to go play with Chris Botti is a traitor and a bit of a sell-out. Nate kicks ass.

  • YES! Chris Potter on alto!

  • Chris Potter is unbelievable!

  • Too bad some ignorant idiot had to go and ruin the comments page of this great video.

  • Fantastic!!! Thanks for sharing! Contagious energy!!

  • i saw them in paris this summer. amazing. we talked to dave after the show. that xylophone is insane live. i will never forget the lines that the security guard said to me after climbing a fence and a tree to get a view. "une fois! deux fois!, trois fois, vous sortez!"

  • eso esta de pinga

    muy bueno,candela.

  • anyone know what sort of bass dave plays?

  • Here he's playing a French bass from the 1800's. Lately he's been playing one of those Czech-ease travel basses that looks like a fat cello.
