This was a perfect song to conclude house season 5. It is bitter sweet. Bitter in the fact that house had lost control of his mind and went to the psychiatric hospital, and sweet in it playing during Cameron and chases wedding. Great song.
Mick jagger was not even the original singer, notice no videos now of the originals, it was some one else thats why I like the song, lol. true! The guitarist? have to look it up!
This song always reminds me of my father, who I never really go to know, I think these words were exactly what he would have said to us if he could. Its very sad, but very beautiful. Life is cruel when people are taken from you too young.
As an 18 year old I would say my generation has the most kids ever who hate it. The most kids who say "I wish I was born in ...." I agree with them. I am truly depressed with today.
Dunno why you tube in germany won't let you view MF's version, but seeing as the stones wrote the song then their version can hardly be classed as sh!t.
this song is the shit dont get me wrong, but why the fuck does youtube refuse to let us watch Marianne F's version of this song in Germany!!!??? fuck this music rights shit is bullshit!!!
I did grow up in the early 60s in England aged 17 and full of childhood innocence. This song so appealed to me while I was a freshman at Newcastle University. England was throbbing with the sounds of the Stones, Beatles, and literally hundreds of groups which played in pubs and dance halls all over England. I was just at the start of the long journey through life's experiences, ending up in beautiful sunny CA. But these songs instantly take me back to simpler times. Thanks for the post.
God, i wish i was a 16 year old girl in the 70's instead. The music had such quality and it was real. There are some good bands now, but they are hard to find
when i was very young, this song was in my dream i was underwater and i loved this girl and some guy stole her from me. it broke my heart,I do miss her. i do not know how i heard this song. I do love that girl. Lots of girls broke my heart. its ok i still love them. Listen you better find Jesus He will never leave YOU. That is all i need to say for now.
@menencho5718 Paul sucks? He is the most successful songwriter in the history of music! And by the way his solo career was more successful as it was from John!
@Libstergirl74 I grew up in the 70's , and just like you i wish i grew up the 60's ,i really resent the fact that i missed that whole decade , i dont know about you but it makes me mad when i think about it. because i wanted to be there and i wasent - i missed it!
wonderful...it is the evening of the day....thanks God we have rolling stones in our world to teach us how to sing the greatest lullaby to our sons and daughters...
It was written by Jagger-Richards and their manager but it was first recorded by Marianne Faithfull (1964). Stones recorded the song a year later in 1965. So this is not the original version.
"As Tears Go By" was one of the first original compositions by Jagger and Richards, as until that point The Rolling Stones had chiefly been performing covers of blues standards.
@xXMangoesXx um....yup: they are!! They both have lovely, gentle, memorable lyrics which actually mean something deeper than the average song. They both use real instruments and lots of them, instead of synthesizers and purely electric sounds. They are both wonderful works of art, well composed and extremely well performed by solidly professional groups. They are both melancholy yet lovely songs about love lost.... the similarities are overwhelming!! Both rock BigTime :-).
"It is the evening of the day, I sit and watch the children play;
Doing things I used to do they think is new..."
The RS wrote about the divide between the 'young generation' and the old folks, and about their own longing to be children again. Ironically, they were the 'old folks' in this song.
I think of this when I read posts by people that think everything they do is something that no one had done or thought of before.
But the bottom line is: Everything old is new again.
@karmadhyana I really appreciate the "Everything old is new." I always remind myself that "Everything new is old," but for some reason have never considered that reversal. It's kind of blowing my mind right now. Thanks for the wisdom.
The first and best version. Written for Marianne Faithful - but she sounds quivery and chilly on her original single. I like this so much better, because it's presented with the simplicity of a children's song, with no overstatement.
hey, dont u hate these fcks who come on song just to press unlike button!? ITS A BEAUTIFUL SONG! i remember listening to this with one girl who did msuicide in the end...we still love you, inge! it taskes more than death to kill a man!!!
Finally, we have the Stones. Fewer covers and, in my opinion, better songs. Stones haven't put out number one after number one albums for no good reason. Glitter Twins, great song writing.
THE QUESTION OF THE DAY..HOW DO I KILL THE TEARS FOR THE LOVE OF MY LIFE,KITTY???????IM SO LOST WITHOUT HER, ITS BEEN ALMOST A YEAR AND STILL NO WHERE GETTING OVER HER..HOW CAN ONE NIGHT DO THAT TO A PERSON????BUT SHE DID..I'D GIVE ANYTHING FOR HER FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE AND WOULD DIE TO MAKE HER MINE..GOOD LUCK SWEETIE..I LOVE U AND THE TEARS WILL NEVER STOP POURING DOWN MY FACE, WITH U IN MY CONSCIENCE..ILL NEVER GET OVER U KITTY..X0..thanx for changing my life....

There's nothing wrong with discovering great music via TV shows, the people employed to find the tunes for big shows get paid for good reason. Other great tracks from House - "I Still Care For You - Ray LaMontagne", "Daniel Lanois - Fire " & "Zero 7 - In The Waiting Line" to name just 3. I love it when a great show turns me on to a great track I might have missed otherwise. =)
