It depends on the amp it's being used in, but in most cases, in my experience, the amp maintains a better tone at lower volumes when the preamp is left unscaled. Sometimes you do need to use a master volume in the scenario, as the unscaled preamp might hit the power section too hard. In this situation, the VVR and Master Volume work together to achieve good overdriven tone at low volumes.
It does significantly lower the volume, but it's not apparent in the video due to the camera's auto-level adjustment. I like the VVR a lot. I've installed in many amps, and usually I find I prefer it just scaling the power amp (including phase inverter) as opposed to the entire amp.

I went ahead and installed the VVR on my amp and it works except when going to the last 30% of the pot because the tone kind of changes.
Why do you like the PA attenuation better?
