As soon as I heard this song when the film came out I had to see it. No disappointment. Clooney was excellent and John Goodman as the bible salesman/Cyclops is great. Terrific music throughout the movie.
and if you don't think so, just watch good night and good luck, written, directed, and starring George Clooney, shows hes more than just a pretty face.
No, it was originally planned for Clooney to sing the song himself, until they heard him sing and decided to get someone who wasn't tone deaf. So they got an established country singer, Dan Tyminski, to dub it.

WTF why is this version so popular it sucks...the original one when the song starts with some low guitar instead of a fiddle is best...this piece of monkey shit sounds so studio and tame by comparison. I use to have the good version but lost it and now cant find it on mp3 its all this polished up piece of shit version
Man of constant sorrow was written around 1913 by Dick Burnett.
Bluegrass has its origins in the 1940's.
The Soggy bottom boys version uses different melodies and some different lyrics. Originally it was 'goodbye to Colorado' rather than 'goodbye to old Kentucky'
Video is great....the Down From the Mountains music is pretty awesome also..worth checking out...the singing in this movie is preformed...great watching and listening.
Hey that is the famous "Gillian Welch" in the beggining of this video. She is the one that sings the "Sirens" song along with Alison Krauss and Emmy Lou Harris and also sings "Down to the river and Pray" She is from where I live Santa Cruz Mountains!
He won a Golden Globe for this performance and totally deserved it. And I'm not just saying that b/c I've been absolutely in love w/ him since I was 12 from the E/R days (the comedy on CBS, that is).
I guess "yodarocks67" is just yet another ignant-magnugget. There might be connexions between the Odyssey and the Tempest, but the movie is clearly based on the first... He starts his post saying "I'm an idiot, dont read the rest..."
