well really wots1 historically took place after wots2 did, so it's really a younger tsubohachi (the guy carrying the girl) hence- the name: kotsubo = tsubohachi without the ko

Actually first you should probably support the girl's cause (suzu) and eventually the afro samurai will try to steal from tesshin and you go to help him, on the way out you are stopped by tesshin I believe and you fight him, the retrieve his cool sword. well considering this was made by a small video game company id say they did a pretty awesome job. when this came out in 2002 it was recognized as a sleeper hit thus calling for a sequel which capcom picked up. what this series really needs is more funding otherwise well never see the third game or the online mode

The concept of being able to choose either the Akadama Clan or the Korou Family or even just be neutral gives the player great freedom, but other areas are extremely lacking.
