  • This is a rare, priceless video.

I bought my first Johnny Rodriguez album in 1975. I still have it. I even got my college room mate (much more modern) to become a fan of Johnny.

I watched Johnny on Country Family Reunion recently and told about his friendship with other Country music icons. I think he also sang this song. I recorded it on my VCR (I don't record anything on the DVR).

  • AWWW...such great memories!

  • Thanks for posting one of the greatest songs, ever !

  • johnny r is great

  • "It ain't the size of the man in the fight ~ it's the size of the fight in the man" ~ who cares how tall Johnny is . . . he's done more for western music than all the rest of them stacked one on top of the other! Remember: dynamite comes in small packages ~ and Johnny Rodriguez was and is DYNAMITE!!

  • SWEET FACE! LOVE the SONG TOO!

  • Quarter in the jukebox at the Sweet Shop back in the day bought three songs. This song always got played. Saw him perform in our town a few years ago. Awesome.

  • that's the way baseball go.

  • Love this song. Given to Johnny by Lefty Frizzell. Written by Lefty Frizzell and Sanger D. Shafer. Just a beautiful song. Could never figure out why Lefty didn't keep it for himself but he really like "Riguez" as Lefty called Johnny. Maybe it was just to help Johnny out. Anyhow, great song, thanks for sharing it.

  • "Real Country"

  • I got to meet & talk for about 45 minutes after a concert ..He was such a nice freindly person,I had a great time joking with him (the nickname we gave him was "Juanito" -Little Johnny,He is only around 5 foot 3 inches or so)

  • This was so wonderful to view! My parents got to see Johnny Rodrigues in concert twice during the period that he released this song & I was SO jealous that I wasn't able to. He was so awesome and I am SO glad that you ahve posted this for all of us JR fans to enjoy. Thanks so much.

  • Johnny Rodriquez was my crush in Jr. High School....I carried an autographed 8 x 10 of him in my binder forever....this was my favorite song....never understood why it was so short....

  • One of the top country music voices, ever!!! Freddy Fender, Johnny Rodriguez, Marty Robbins, and Rick Trevino have done CountryMusic and Texas Proud!!!! Thank you gentleman!!!

  • Wow. The original Music City Band. That's me playing piano, David burns on steel, Merle Counts on steel and Rip Willis on drums.

    Great days

  • This is my favorite of all his songs.... Love this sweet & gentle man........:)

  • Oops was in my grand daughters account when I posted this!!!

  • JR did a song, She don't cry like she use to, help

  • You TRIED to talk to me about your friend John Chu. We visited and cooked shrimp many moons ago. Jerry and I would love to visit with you now. The Harris family in Gilmer.

  • Thumb this up if you know what I'm talking about!! Johnny Cash helped me get out of prison long before Rodriguez stole that goat..

  • It's a Merle Haggard song. Johnny does it good!

  • @caddyshackman actually Johnny did it first in 1974...Merle didn't do it til 1983 and it was written by Lefty Frizzell and Sanger D. Shafer

  • proud to be the 100th person who appreciates good music!

  • I've never heard of him, very nice!

  • best version i have ever heard . you are the man johnny .

  • i have always loved his music. he is also a handsome man to boot!!!!!!

  • he look like blake shelton

  • Everytime I hear this version. I think of my mom playing it all the time on her old records. This is the best version out of all of them.

  • im going through a divorce i didnt want,so now this song fits how i feel, you have to move on with life,God is good, hes my ROCK

  • I remember him well, My family was at a local county fair in the state of ohio and i remember my sister and i went to jump the fence to get on stage and our father stopped us. He has such a sweet voice and sound when he sings, His looks is bad either then and now for a older person!

  • Johnny Rodriguez was the first Latino in country music. Freddy Fender started as rock n roll, but later made the transition to country. Johnny got his start playing guitar in Tom T. Hall's band, the Storytellers and Tom helped him to earn a record deal.

  • I remember well when Johnny released his cover of this great Lefty Frizzell tune. From Lefty's rendition, to all the recorded covers that have been made by various artists, I've heard just about all of them. In my opinion Johnny's rendition stands above them all. His magnificent voice & phrasing made his rendition 1 of the greatest of any song ever. The song & his voice & phrasing are such an amazing unity that even this recording with fairly crude equipment is magnificent.
