  • I use to live like 3 streets away from this station back in 79

  • I much prefer the old white and red livery. Especially on the D stock. Disappointed that it was replaced.

  • Havent you got a home to go to??

  • @Arriva2010 the next stop also has two platforms and is less than 200 yards away form south ealing. one of the trains terminates there

  • aaah... the joy of being crammed in on a heathrow tube and to get to south ealing for hardly anyone getting off...

  • This was shot around 1993-94, right?

  • wie geil....das war unsere "heimat tube station" beim letzten london urlaub :=))))

  • what is the year you filmed it in?

  • hehe. loving the swat006007 comment. He's spot on :)

  • i love the piccadilly line trains

  • What year is this ? 80's?

  • @SiannaMarie143

I bought the camcorder in December 1989, so anytime after that, but I dont remember exactly when.

  • @SiannaMarie143 Looks far better without loads of sign and CCTV pollution back then unlike now

  • If Chris tucker or Jackie Chan would'of walked of the tube, then i would of understood why you called it rush hour! but there's no one there!!!!!

  • @swat006007

but this is a suburban station and in the evenings passengers travel TO here, so between trains it will look empty!

  • Why were they both going the same way? Did the piccadilly ever have fast and slow trains just like the metropilitan?

  • The reason for 4 tracks dates back to when District line trains travelled to Hounslow as well as Piccadilly.

Nowadays the former District line track travelling towards London is used as a test track / not for passenger trains, whilst the other track is used to help regulate train services, as seen here.

One of the trains seen here is going to Heathrow airport, whilst the other is only going as far as Northfields depot, and with two tracks available the latter will not delay the former.

  • This isnt rush hour! They should do a video at 08:30 on a weekday when the platform is full from front to back and you miss about 4 trains trying to get on one!

  • Ah!!!!!!!! Classic London- 3rd rail electric underground railway and a big red bus. God, how I miss it.

  • when was this filmed

  • I bought the camcorder in December 1989 and therefore this would have been filmed in the early 1990's.

Thats all I can say / I did not keep notes of dates of filming things.

  • I miss the old grey tube trains. The modern red & blue colours are just ugly.

  • You silly fool the silver grey has never appealed to me or anyone I know.

  • is THIS a rush hour?? ...i wish i was living in London...

  • @newsmaniaingaidai - a rush hour at South Ealing isn't the same as a rush hour at Oxford Circus.

  • Rush hours are much worse than this video, i dont why the poster called it rush hour..

  • it was filmed at a station in a residential area towards the end of the evening rush hour - at this time of day the crowds are in Central London,

Therefore, at this station you will mostly see passengers alighting from trains.

But, come here in the morning and you will see crowded platforms with passengers trying to get to work on time.

  • why do they need 2 stations so close - south ealing and northfields?

  • y r those train whte not red

  • Pre-Refurbishment. The LU trains were mostly made like that before the 1992 stock came into production.

  • Do you know ehn the deep level tube stock trains were refurbished? I actually like the LU

  • 1999 to 2001 i think

  • Oh no much earlier I know this because the 65 bus that goes past at 0:18 is a red metrobus and Armchair took over the route in 1991.

  • lol i was replying to a question about when the 73 stock trains were refurbished! Still good to know what London's suburbs were like before i was born though!

  • .....

  • what a waste of time filming, posting and commenting on this video,

    utter drab......

i know there is more to do in london than this

  • if "filming, posting and commenting on this video" is such a waste of time then why did you do just that?

yup, there is loads to do in London; quiet interludes sometimes come in handy between the busier times.

  • Your a waste of time get over it

  • And i see that i wasted my time on this one truly,

thank you for showing me that Ben

i hope the irony is not lost on you either

  • yeah i with simon

  • Why watch it?

  • Because it's a piece of history

  • not much of a rush now is there :P

  • I used to use that stn as I studied Computers in TVU Good memories !!!!!

  • That was rush hour? Wow, people didin't used to get out much did they!

  • yes but it was a suburban station to which people travel, and it was filmed from the far end of the train (ie; not near the station / platform exit). Oh, and also, this was filmed near the end of the rush hour when the majority of people travelling straight home from work would have already passed through this station.

Finally, this station is quite close to another station (Northfields) so it is not one of the busiest.

    Simon

  • What year was this clip filmed it was certainly before all 1973 tube stock was refurbished in a dvd on the piccadilly line i saw the interiors of the refurbished stock and it features longitudinal seating throughout compared to what they were like before

  • Nice video!!

  • Well there was nothing wrong there.

Trains connect no fuss just good old

    London Transport.

    5*

  • Another outstanding snippet of history!

  • the piccadilly line not painted!

  • thats how they were when first introduced.

    Nowadays all trains are painted.

    Simon

  • shame! I prefer the 73 stock unrefurbished!:(

  • Shame. The 73 stock looks nice unrefurbished. One question i have to ask is why does 83/D78 and 73 stock have the red band on the front?

  • Sorry, but I do not know... I assume that it has something to do with visibility (ie: railway staff working on or near the tracks seeing them approaching), although nowadays they all have red fronts, not just red bands!

    Simon

  • are you planning to make new videos of london underground and do you need to ask when you film on the london underground

  • re: the need to ask, well they like it but I rarely did. However you MUST NOT use a tripod, as this is a safety risk. Also, you must not enter areas closed to passengers.

They are not keen on people filming in the rush hour but if you keep out of the way of passengers then they will have less of a reason to be irritated by a person with a camera. Also, no flashguns. Never!

As for new films, I have no plans at present but do not rule it out for the future.

    Simon

  • It doesn't look like this video was made later than 1990 - the 65 bus going across the bridge is red, but from January 1991 Armchair operated the 65 using orange and white Leyland Olympians, and by the time the route passed to London United (June 2002), all of the Piccadilly Line's 1973 stock had been refurbished and repainted into today's white, blue and red livery.

  • Well I bought the camcorder in December 1989.

So it could have been filmed in 1990. I do not remember anymore.

    Simon

  • the look of that train scares me, whenever I'm on LU I usually use the Northern, District and Central lines...lived in LDN all my life and I don't think I've ever used the Piccadily!

  • try it - it wont bite!

Take the train to Knightsbridge and have an afternoon at Harrods...

or go for a spin on the 4 track section between Hammersmith and Acton Town.

    Simon

  • ... and yes, I grew up in ealing too.. but in the 60's & 70's. I would say it is still the best suburb in London!

  • living in a different suburb I have different views!

    Simon

  • As indeed .. you would :0)

  • woop woop this is the area i grew up in big love to ealing !!

  • from your message it sounds like you happy to grow up in Ealing :-)

    Simon

  • hell yh Ealing rocks its not to ghetto and not to posh haha!

  • .. and that was a 65 going across the bridge as the first train arrived!

  • roffles rush hour

yes I'm proud of us (an ealinger ;) )

  • the sound of tube wheels hitting the track is unique. I never heard this elsewhere.

    Like it.

  • is that Bakerloo Line or Piccaddilly? The two lines has their train manufactured by the same company (Metro-Cammell).

  • Piccadilly Line

  • I love to see film of other countries and how people live in everyday life. Thanks.

  • Not to much of a Rush going on at Rush Hour... looks more like sleepy hour... Come om mate get some major rush hours in like Waterloo or Victoria tube..

  • Hey, c'mon, even at the 'outer' ends of those routes the crowds are smaller.

If you want a sleepy rush hour wait until I uplift my Hainault - Woodford footage!

  • Brilliant! How old is this footage?

  • dont recall exact date (and its probably noy written on the tape cassette cover) but probably from the early to mid 1990's, as thats when I was filming a lot.

  • I practically grew up on this station! I remember waiting for hours once to see one of the 15 trains of 1938 stock that the Piccadilly Line had in the days when it was mostly 1959 stock and the line terminated at a very countrified Hounslow West!

  • It would have terminated at Hounslow Barracks, the buffers can still be seen under the current station - just look round the back from the car park.

  • Not to mention the raised walkway between South Ealing & Northfields that existed for many years! and the abandoned platforms of the original Osterley station.
