I use a small amount of Arm & Hammer detergent and Oxyclean to handwash my cross-stitch. The Oxyclean really brightens the colors. I recommend ironing cross-stitches on four layers of towels, so the cross-stitch does not become flattened.
It would have been nice to see a step-by-step tutorial here, instead of generalized instructions.

@helen39on You are right, this needs to be "how to prepare your work for framing".
And the explanation about 'ironing' the finished piece lacks much of the information that is needed to do this properly.
