The decline of empires always has at it roots economic motives expressed through neverending military expansion, until military efforts exhaust the resources available. The only disagreement I have is with the assertion that politicians "never work a day in their lives"; they actually work pretty hard, but at question is the level of wisdom they bring to their work.
