though I love these old clips, I must admit, I saw an interesting bit from a recent Royal Rumble where John Morrison was knocked outside and was able to grab onto the barricade and jump back over to the ring to avoid elimination. To me, a spot like that is worthy of this old classic match. It's similar to the kinds of things Perfect and Michaels did in all these old battle royals
Great match, thanks for posting. I'd have to agree that Hogan was champ way too long. WWF probably would have been better if they had more title changes in that era.
Man, Perfect vs. Valentine could've been a pretty sweet series of matches for the IC title...I know, Hammer was a little old by then and he wasn't at his best as a face, but the crowd was behind the guy, and the way Perfect sells for him here is outstanding.
What a gem!! Tugboat and Earthquake, perfect dominant figures~ Hogan proved to show why he was the most loved champ of all time! Big props to HBK, he could have been a boxer, rising star! Last but not least, Curt Henning, (Mr. Perfect) a master strategist with perfect execution! He defended about about 5 over the tops in this match, saving the most impressive to topple an adreanalized Greg "The Hammer" Valentine! The master copy of this should be on display in The Sistine Chapel.
WWF dropped the ball with Curt Hennig. The best WM main event would've been Mr. Perfect vs. Hogan. But they had Hogan no-selling everything the guy did a solid year before...as much as I loved Hogan, he got in the way of a lot of good stuff.
I am pretty sure this is the match where MR Perfect injured his back.. HE was out of wrestling for quite awhile after wrestling Bret Hart at Survivor Series for fifteen minutes when he only supposed to wrestle for three minutes... HE had a bulging disc and broken tailbone from this match..I miss MR Perfect Curt Hennig.. He was one of the best wrestlers ever who never really got to the level he deserved.. SAD..
Mr Perfect! The absolute best Intercontinental Chapion Ever. Not only was he a great showman inside the ring but a better human being outside of it. Its a shame what wrestling has turned into.
Here is a list of all of the participants... 1. Hulk Hogan 2. Mr. Perfect 3. "Texas Tornado" Kerry von Erich 4. Marty Jannetty (of The Rockers) 5. Shawn Michaels (of The Rockers) 6." Hacksaw" Jim Duggan 7. Earthquake 8. Tugboat 9. Warlord 10. British Bulldog 11. Hercules 12. Jake "The Snake" Roberts 13. Haku 14. Greg "The Hammer" Valentine 15. Big Boss Man 16. The Barbarian 17. "Superfly" Jimmy Snuka 18. Paul Roma 19. Kato (of the Orient Express) 20. Tanaka (of the Orient Express)
@TheLastBrainLeft I actually saw Lanny Poffo wrestle last weekend in Brantford. He was part of a Survivor Series style team elimination, did one reverse flip off the turnbuckle and then they announced he injured himself and was eliminated which was rather hilarious as it took them about 10 seconds to do it.
What ever happened to Greg "THE HAMMER" Valentine RUGGED Ronnie Garvin The Brooklyn Brawler Pistol Pez Watley? Thats the wrestling I miss. One true main event every week, and most of the time the matches were finished no interuptions.
dis is the set up for TUGBOAT becoming TYPHOON & joining EARTHQUAKE right? I remember watching this as a kid, sooooo many memories, yes, this was basically FREE PPV!
Mr. Perfect would've been a world champion, but couldn't perform optimally due to injuries. Wow, what would that have been like? Mr. Perfect as WWF world champion. (and yes, it is WWF, not WWE, ok kiddies?)
@chaosrave Don't come onto a video and talk shit, ok? I'm sure whatever sport or hobbie or tv show or anything you like is special to you as maybe you grew up with it. For a lot of people, this was a part of their childhood, along with GI Joe and Super Mario and Thundercats. I guess you think that is gay too right? Dude, just shut the fuck up.
@RevolvingDoor22 actually i also was a wrestling fan during when undertaker was quite big... i wrote the initial comment as a joke thats why i added a "lol" at the end... i just got annoyed of your response thats why i insulted u back... nothing big lol... but u have to admit they do look kinda gay =P
@morganhefferon22 u like watching men hug each other while they violently attack each other wearing less than underwear like apparel.. . yea im the gay one lol
Mr. Perfect reminded me of me in this battle royal. Every time my sends me off to work I come back in just like Mr. Perfect did when tried tossing him out lol. :P jk
I liked Greg Valentine as a classic hard nosed heel. But it was neat that the fans had a chance to cheer him on as a face, as thanks for his many years as a classic heel.
There is selling, and there is WAY overselling. Look at 7:48 where Mr. Perfect way oversells a handchop to the chest (from the incredibly powerful.....Greg Valentine???)
I rarely see gut-wrench or belly to belly suplexes, and I couldn't even tell you the last time I saw a long extended classic suplex where one guy holds the other 180 degrees vertical for what seems like ages. It's all clothes-lines, chest slaps, and fancy-ass finishers.
I wanna see classic golden-age era wrestling matches again, and ones that are sold well where I can't see the victim watching from the corner of his eye as the 'surprise' attack comes from behind.
omg I remember seeing this once before soon after I started watching wrestling. I don't remember if I saw this on coliseum home video or on prime time wrestling or what, but this was probably the very first battle royal I ever saw.
This was just before Hogan "retired" and just before HBK sent Jannety through the barber shop window. Damn what a flashback. I miss this era of wrestling... IMO better than Attitude.
@radicalman33 Amen dude. To me there have only been a small handful of intercontinental champions worth remembering. Honkytonk Man, 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper, Mr. Perfect, Bret Hart, and Shawn Micheals.
@StrikkklyROCKERS To me, Savage will always be one of the all time best World Champions. He WAS a great IC champion, but I think his 2 runs as World Champion were even better. However guys like Perfect and Hart, I think they gave their best performances as IC champ. The Ladder Match between Michaels and Scott Hall was one of the best IC matches I've ever seen. Shawn Michaels will be known for many things by many different people, but to me, he peaked as an IC champ.
@RicoLen1 I can respect that. However my favorite IC championship match was Savage v. Steamboat at WM III. The 3 count give Steamboat the title ALWAYS gives me chills!
I never understood why Jake and Quake didn't have a blowoff match during the summer (I saw them at a house show in June '91). They could've either did Jake/Quake at SummerSlam, or even better, Jake/Bushwhackers vs. Natural Disasters in a handicap match. In the case of the latter, it would've given the 'Whackers SOME chance to win the match, lol.
I'm counting the wrestlers here who have since passed away.
1. Curt Hennig
2. Kerry Von Eric
3. John (Earthquake) Tenta
4. Ray (Big Bossman) Traylor
5. Davey Boy Smith
That's a quarter of the men here. It's been twenty years sure, but these are fairly young guys and even the fattest ones were in better physical shape than I ever was.
Even more surprising is that Jake Roberts is still alive!
Mr Perfect was a fantastic seller, the way he would sell moves, to make it look like he was really hurt, nobody did it better than the late Curt Hennig.
@Rob23 hennig should have been champion in those days. The reason him and hart didn't get to fight hogan is because they would've exposed what a shitty wrestler hogan really was to the fans.
@violinsofangels Hey dumbass, Hogan did a significant program with Perfect and their matches were great. The fans didn't care about "wrestling" in a scripted performance. They cared about being ENTERTAINED.
@RAV52 Maybe gay little faggot fans like you only cared about "being entertained", meanwhile real wrestling fans like me were paying more attention to technical ability, and ability to perform real wrestling moves, other than the big boot and leg drop, or the dreaded air punch to the face. Get off hogans nuts you pathetic, 31 year old hulkamaniac.
@violinsofangels You sound like you should probably be watching high school or collegiate wrestling then, asshole. Like the kind your dad did inside your anus down in the basement while your mom was at work in the local strip club. Fucking cocksucking smark.
Hahahaha! I've never seen this. It's so funny how all the feuds are set up for mania 7. Davey Boy v Warlord, Jake v Earthquake. Hogan hits Tug Boat first and yet comes out the good guy. Never liked Hogan, I was always a Macho Man fan and it had to be one or the other! Nothing like a Valentine elbow drop....or shoulder breaker
@fivebearrugs Hey I'm working off memory here and I was 10 year old at the time, and didn't have sky, just 2nd hand videos from my Auntie at random times. Anyway, thanks for the correction ;-P
@superfrickensexy world tour 91 they wrestled then, and i wouldn't be surprised if that match was sparked off by this encounter, and also greg hammer faced perfect and greg CHEATED like crazy in that other match it was on prime time wrestling..i loved this battle royal, i saw it live and i was only new to wrestling and not all that long a perfect fan (i used to follow the model)so when he won, i was massively happy
@Qualipus Greg turned face in early '91, shortly before WrestleMania VII. He had eliminated Dino Bravo at the Rumble (but was still a heel), and became a face when Jimmy Hart accidentally smashed a guitar over Hammer's head, who was holding Saba Simba (I think it was him) to be hit. Hammer lost to Quake at WM, and then to IRS at SummerSlam.
Its such a cool thing to see how much the crowd is behind Greg Valentine when he's one-on-on against Mr. Perfect at the end of this. He was very much an underused talent at this time. Very cool to see.
I never saw this as a kid, but it was good to see that Shawn was worthy of final-four status even tho he was still in Rockers - I think Vince knew he was destined to be a huge draw in later years. Thanks for the post, but the vid won't play past 6:52, so havent seen the end yet. boo hoo
@erock1892 Apparently if you were Samoan, Fijian or Tongan, you'd pretty much be wrestling barefoot...see Jimmy Snuka, Yokozuna, Wild Samoans, Headshrinkers. I guess Barbarian is the only exception to the rule...
You can see the differences among all the wrestlers. From the body types, colorfull gears, and wrestling styles. That is what i loved about the this era that i grew up on. Now of days, the wrestlers have no unique personality. Their all too preocupied about looking cool with their tattos and one line phrases.
@13625 They try to one line like the Rock and they cant do it. The difference now is that McMahon markets it as sports entertainment and scripts absolutely everything. In these times the scripts were loose so peoples charisma showed through. The gimmicks were awesome, now everyone fights with some garbage first and last name. It takes away from the mystique. WWE can never duplicate its success from its earlier history
@13625 I agree. Ok the matches weren't as varied back then. But the characters and attires were so much better. I wrestle for our local company. I'm no pro but it's great focusing on this style of wrestling.
@stufaman Dude they WERE more varied. The differences may have been more subtle... yeah no TLC matches or whatever, but the types of wrestlers and matches back there were way different than what you see now. How often do you see inverted atomic drops, sling shots into the top ropes, or even a double axe handle from the second turnbuckle while the opponent is still standing? Shit man watch some of Randy Savages classic matches while he was IC champ, you don't see ANYTHING like that anymore.
@RicoLen1 Savage Vs Steamboat was a class match. As it happens I'm an amateur wrestler in UK. I'll never be a WWE bigshot. But I use simple moves, rarely win, yet because I do a similar character from this era. It works well for 'some' fans of vintage wrestling.
Come to think of it the IC title in the 80s/90s were home to the best matches I remember.
I think I got all the 20 wrestlers in this match: Barbarian Big Bossman British Bulldog Earthquake Greg Valantine Haku Hercules Hulk Hogan Jake Roberts Jim Duggan Jimmy Snuka Kato Marty Jannetty Mr. Perfect Paul Roma Shawn Michaels Tanaka Texas Tornado Tugboat Warlord
If Curt Hennig's career could have just lasted even just 5 more extra years, we would have seen him as champion. '91 summerslam was a classic match vs Bret Hart, and the 2 minute sequence in this match with Shawn Michaels was full of excitement. Wrestling really missed out on one of the all-time greatest careers thanks to his unfortunate injuries
Curt Hennig showing again that of all the great wrestlers we have lost, Mr Perfect is by far one of the hardest to swallow. I think I can say without hyperbole he's one of the true greats.
Wild that half the wrestlers in this ring are gone. RIP, Earthquake, Von Erich, Boss Man, Perfect, Hercules Henandez, British Bulldog. Ah nothing like the golden age of wrestling
Mr Perfect was indeed perfect... so technical , so good at making guys look tough by taking beatings.... no one performed quite like him... it's guys like him that made the good guy's look so awesome.. RIP... Legend!
R.I.P. Mr. Perfect, British Bulldog, Earthquake, Texas Tornado, Macho Man, & Big Boss Man.

@donnywharfare jake did not fight earthquake at wrestlenmania 7 u coon!!!!

@donnywharfare This battle royal took place after WM VI. Jake and Quake started their feud shortly after.

@fivebearrugs Hey I'm working off memory here and I was 10 year old at the time, and didn't have sky, just 2nd hand videos from my Auntie at random times. Anyway, thanks for the correction ;-P

@donnywharfare No problem! :) I, unlike other YouTubers, don't feel the need to correct people with hostility and name-calling ;)

Yet another battle royal-type match where Hogan eliminates the Warlord...
jkoz148 1 year ago
i always loved it wen mr perfect and shawn micheals got it on, that was the best match up ever and was never promoted big enough in my opinion.
superfrickensexy 1 year ago
@superfrickensexy world tour 91 they wrestled then, and i wouldn't be surprised if that match was sparked off by this encounter, and also greg hammer faced perfect and greg CHEATED like crazy in that other match it was on prime time wrestling..i loved this battle royal, i saw it live and i was only new to wrestling and not all that long a perfect fan (i used to follow the model)so when he won, i was massively happy
TheBarrymanfan 1 year ago
Was Greg "the Hammer" Valentine a Face back then? Cause iirc, didn't he turn face around this time?
Qualipus 1 year ago
@Qualipus Greg turned face in early '91, shortly before WrestleMania VII. He had eliminated Dino Bravo at the Rumble (but was still a heel), and became a face when Jimmy Hart accidentally smashed a guitar over Hammer's head, who was holding Saba Simba (I think it was him) to be hit. Hammer lost to Quake at WM, and then to IRS at SummerSlam.

was greg valentine a heel at this time?

I love battle royals, WWE & TNA need to do more of them. Can't wait till Thursday night when TNA does the $100,000 battle royal.

I really miss those days of good wrestling. Growing up they were role models. I hate to see what the new generation has in wrestling now.

marvo40two 1 year ago
You can see the differences among all the wrestlers. From the body types, colorfull gears, and wrestling styles. That is what i loved about the this era that i grew up on. Now of days, the wrestlers have no unique personality. Their all too preocupied about looking cool with their tattos and one line phrases.
13625 1 year ago 38
@13625 They try to one line like the Rock and they cant do it. The difference now is that McMahon markets it as sports entertainment and scripts absolutely everything. In these times the scripts were loose so peoples charisma showed through. The gimmicks were awesome, now everyone fights with some garbage first and last name. It takes away from the mystique. WWE can never duplicate its success from its earlier history
GLazz85 1 year ago
@13625 lol riiight... if only Big Bossman, Tugboat, & Hercules would come save us. I'll take my Daniel Bryan, CM Punk, & Miz any day, thank you.

@shepherdphil1986 WFT what? I prefer many of todays stars to Bossman, Tugboat, & Hercules.
creatureofthenight1 1 year ago
@13625 I agree. Ok the matches weren't as varied back then. But the characters and attires were so much better. I wrestle for our local company. I'm no pro but it's great focusing on this style of wrestling.
stufaman 11 months ago
@stufaman Dude they WERE more varied. The differences may have been more subtle... yeah no TLC matches or whatever, but the types of wrestlers and matches back there were way different than what you see now. How often do you see inverted atomic drops, sling shots into the top ropes, or even a double axe handle from the second turnbuckle while the opponent is still standing? Shit man watch some of Randy Savages classic matches while he was IC champ, you don't see ANYTHING like that anymore.
RicoLen1 11 months ago
@RicoLen1 Savage Vs Steamboat was a class match. As it happens I'm an amateur wrestler in UK. I'll never be a WWE bigshot. But I use simple moves, rarely win, yet because I do a similar character from this era. It works well for 'some' fans of vintage wrestling.
Come to think of it the IC title in the 80s/90s were home to the best matches I remember.

If Curt Hennig's career could have just lasted even just 5 more extra years, we would have seen him as champion. '91 summerslam was a classic match vs Bret Hart, and the 2 minute sequence in this match with Shawn Michaels was full of excitement. Wrestling really missed out on one of the all-time greatest careers thanks to his unfortunate injuries
jrmenard630 1 year ago
Curt Hennig showing again that of all the great wrestlers we have lost, Mr Perfect is by far one of the hardest to swallow. I think I can say without hyperbole he's one of the true greats.
