Someone has probably noted this somewhere else in the comments or am I the only one who has noted that much of the plot here is based upon part of the Stephen King novel "The Tommyknockers"? Except there it was a Jesus picture that talked to the wife. No mention anywhere in the credits of where the original plot idea came from...
I saw this when it first broadcasted in the mid 90s. By today's standards, it is unique. But for the standards of broadcast television and even movies of the mid 90s, this episode was truly remarkable and ground breaking for the time in it's portrayal and visualizations in the way a psychotic experiences reality.
That or the point was that she was descending into madness and no one around her noticed. Most people would notice if their spouse started talking to pictures or had a bullet in their brain.
If the fact that her husband was so oblivious to her gunshot wound and that by sending her to see a vet, who also couldn't figure it out, directly leads to his own death isn't obvious enough the end narration should be a bit of a hint.
Of course dissecting it kinda ruins the bit where it's funny ):
Ok, for all you Plebs who "Don't" get this tale. It's about a woman who is so mundane in her own life, that she doesn't even realise that she has Shot herself . She doesn't matter to anyone else, so she doesn't even matter to herself. Hence when she says at the end "Oh my God, I shot myself in the head." at the end of the tale. She realises what a waste her life has been. Simple really.
@Ericzeppe I find it funny that you think if someone doesn't like the episode and you in turn do then it MUST be too complex. That's unfortunate that your capacity to understand complexity peaks out at around this video. How is it walking through life as a moron? Must be rough.... good luck. Keep watching these deep, insightful, groundshaking pieces AKA The Outer Limits! You'll be the next Einstein in no time at this rate!
It shows that she was bored... Her life had no meaning.. therefore she began to go nuts/get paranoid etc.. Thinking he was cheating, she planned his death. (I DON'T think she Really shot herself..) I think they both died from the electricity.. The bullet may have been just a metaphor for shooting herself by planning & killing her husband & Loosing her mind (going nuts). Finally, she came out of the craziness, realizing what she did & tried to save him, only to kill herself too. That my 2 cents.
@wootlanter thats because you expect women to be mundane and have no life. If you, yourself, were in fact forced to be a "breeder, dishwasher and scuvvy" for no pay or recognition, then perhaps this "story" would make sense. BY the way, over 90% of women still have this existence. If your happy with that, then fine.
wow. this was the single most fucked up episode i have ever seen. even the NARRATOR didnt have much to say about it. i guess i left him speechless hahahah!!
Just imagine the report of the autopsy. The house burnt to the grounds, however, they died electrocuted and also the woman had a bullet in her head. Aah, and a patch over it...
Now I get it. Her husband don't like the kind of sex his wife gave him in the last part. He's not having an affair, he secretly likes to suck the man meat
Huh, the ending does raise some questions: She realized at the end that she shot herself and the guy in the photo was just a delusion. That means everything he told her could just be made up, including her husband cheating on her. That makes this less about a bored housewife striking out at her cheating husband and more a twisted story of her just going nuts and getting them both killed due to it.
wow what a waste of time...sorry but this was the absolute worst episode i've seen...apart from the intro voice, i would have never known this was the outer limits
I loved this episode. It's all about the unreliable narrator, you don't know what to believe. And it ended in the logical spot, with her character transition from believing her delusions to finally realizing they were delusions. Of course most TV watchers like flashing lights and alien monsters to keep their attention, but I love the chracter study episodes too.
Not A Very Good Episode . In Fact Aload of Rubbish.

It was a short story actually. He must have liked it because he reused it in "Tommyknockers". This is a really faithful adaptation though.
