She is simply the most adorable rat! I have 4 who have just had two litters of babies, some will be kept and taught tricks from a very young age. I have tried training the males but they seem very reluctant to eat treats outside the cage. I have used lettuce before simply because they really like it, but they still seem reluctant to eat outside the cage or in my hands. How can you overcome this?
@thewr0ngchild Getting some rats to eat outside their cage just takes time. Once they are comfortable with you, they will start eating. I have heard that using yogurt can help at times. Good luck!
i did have rats but tthey one of them died of numonia and breathing problems and the other one was blind cudnt balance and died for sum reason i dont know i really want anothe rat but ym mom wont let me get more THANK YOU for listning o my life story good bye :)
any one who can tell me how to train my girls to play basketball it would be appreciated, I am not sure what type of treats to give them, don't want to give too many treats.
i have a question.. whta should i do if my rat is scared, i bought it in zoological shop. i got it from 3 weeks and he;s still trying to escape all the time.
@planetJENESSA When they do, it doesn't hurt because it's more of a grab than a bite. It does startle you though. They can't see very well, so if your hand/finger smells like food, then they'll mistake it for food (it won't usually break the skin, though...)
@PULSE88 yea i wanted a snake but my mom wont let me it was just a corn snake :( but since im going to cali soon i can bring my rats since they dont need all that lighting im planning on getting a rat in like a day im exited
Thats cool. I had rat's untill about 3 weeks ago, as the last one was put down due to cancer. Her name was 'Tiny' & was the runt of the rat pack. She was really small, like a mouse, a brown/white hooded rat. From 3 weeks ago backwards, I had rats, from the same & different breeds & generations for 9 years.
This was a female. Males you can tell rite away (large testicles). Females often get mamary tumors, so I've opted to buy only males from now on. Once a female goes thru puberty, at about a year old, they will develop tumors most likely, and if they don't u are very lucky. I've had 3 female rats die from tumors, and it's a slow painful death...sad really. So I'd definitely recommend male rats.
Ive had 3 girls in the past and none of them have had tumours. 2 lived to very old age, finally succumbing from breathing problems. 1 died quite young of the same bacteria (cant remember the name).
Ive got 3 more and they are adults and so far, tumour free, Were they a particular breed?
Wonderful video! I will try this with my babies ^_^ Really well done vid. Clear and to the point.. thanks for posting it :p I've heard nothing but good reports on the yogurt treats. I think I'll scoop some up at the petstore. Lovely rat btw ^_^ Hooded is my favorite colour combo.

@PULSE88 17 rats! wow! did you breed them then?
jockandcariad 1 year ago
@jockandcariad
I 'kinda' did. When I bought my rat 'Widdells', she was already pregent so thats what gave me lots of rats LOL.
PULSE88 1 year ago
@PULSE88
hehe awww they must be a little bit of a handfull, but they make such fantastic pets (I really don't understand why people didlike them so much).
jockandcariad 1 year ago
@jockandcariad
Yeah, they were great. My dad loved them too & is thinking about getting rats again soon.
I had 2x white albino rats, 2x hairless rats, 3x brown hooded rats & 3x black hooded rats.
Some people are just stupid & only accept what they've been told, rather than real fact. Plus, alot of people say they are scared of their tails.
For example, my girlfriend was but once you got to know them & touch them & stuff, she loved them, nearly as much as I do :D

It depends on what you're looking for in a rat.
