You can use either. There is no need to strum at all since there is a purple line.

The Purple notes can be played by just pressing the frets, without strumming, even if you miss, you still don't have to strum as long as they are the purple notes. The touch strip can also be used here. Normal hammer ons you must strum again if you break your combo.
