FAA is a joke. I've been in this 40 yrs. Big shops fake records on a daily basis. Feds look the other way. Last place I got fired from for refusing to falsify inspections has had 4 fatal crashes killing 10 since they fired me for bitching about the shoddey maintenance. FAA ignores them and recently gave them another "maintenance excellence" award. What a joke.
@nottooold13 All i can say is lying will only make the person who does it worse off. SO if you are remember that it will only effect you in the longrun
IT must be nice servicing your own aircraft yourself rather than relyign on a mechanic to do it. YOu can never be absolutely sure somebody else will not make a mistake when servicing an aircraft that might cost you your life in flight where as if you have done it and ispected the work yourself you no exactly what has been done throughly. I hate to admit it but i don't really trust anybdoy
@tradernorton05 HOw do you become licensed? There have been cases in the past where licensed mechanics have made serious errors which have killed people. I don't tolerate mistakes
@210482fmj To become licensed in the states, most people enroll in an FAA approved maintenance school to recieve your A/P license.
Sure some mechanics have made mistakes. There isnt a soul on earth that hasnt made a mistake. My point is that its highly illegal and dangerous for an unlicensed person to go and start wrenching on aircraft. Would you want to fly on an airline with a "pilot" who never recieved his pilots license?
@tradernorton05 IT must be nice for private pilots to have done aviation maintenace courses so they can thouroughly service there own plane before a long flight and it would be satisfying. THat would be handy for bush flying if you suffer an engine failure in the middle of knowhere. Y
yeah, alot of bush pilots also have their mechanics license. Its a good idea to have it when you're flying in remote territory. Also, a pilot with a mechanics license(A/P) is more likely to get hired for jobs because he's more versatile and valuble.

@210482fmj Over the years I have examined 50+ mechanics' work. Nearly every one is incompetent, unethical on every level. Half are DUIs and drunk on the job. One AAttentionDeficiteD has left major components loose, and makes big $ because he gets drunk with his boss. I have watched the FAA do NOTHING. I can prove mechanical problems but the FAA blames pilot error because he botched the emergency landing. FAA is a joke IMO. Nobody touches my plane but me. period.
@tradernorton05 I have an acquaintance who is a high time commercial pilot, NOT a licensed mechanic, and the FAA came down on him for doing his own very major maintenance and overhaul. He told them that HE is the only pilot of his aircraft, that HE is the first one to a crash scene, and that they should GET OUT of his shop. They threatened him, but nothing official was ever done and they have never returned. He continued to fly for several more years until his retirement, still flies privately.
I know a fellow who also was doing his own un-authorized maintenance, but one day the plane crashed due to pilot error. The Feds came in and demanded the logbooks and started looking over any recent repairs. While looking over the airplane, they noticed several parts that had been obviously recently replaced, but yet they couldnt find any logbook entries(because the guy wasnt a mechanic, he couldnt sign the books)
Anyways, the guy finally confessed that he was wrenching without a license, and the Feds fined the hell out of him, and revoked his pilots license for a period of time.
And yes, I also know a few licensed mechanics that shouldnt be working on aircraft. Instead they should be changing oil at the local jiffy lube.
:O this was awesome. I could flying in, landing on the bar, climbing out with fly fishing gear, catching dinner, and flying home! Mental note* must get pilots license

@210482fmj fact. But of course no government employee nor maintenance director would be unethical.

@210482fmj
There's several things a non-mechanic can do to service his own aircraft, but everything else must be done by a licensed A/P.
Performing un-authorized maintenance is a good way to get yourself in some serious trouble with the Feds. Its also a good way to get yourself killed.
