The Anatolian shown here is obviously a juvenile. Anatolians can have either long of short hair, and can be fawn w/ black points, brindled, or piebald. An adult male would be as long and tall as the cat, but much broader. I've owned them for over twenty years - no dog for a lightweight, or anyone looking for unquestioning obedience. Wonderful stock dogs, and great with kids. Will roar like a lion at someone they suspect of having bad intentions, which is truly frightening.

The Anatolian or Kangal does not herd livestock. They guard herds much like their cousins the ovcharkas. Well,, there is a difference between an anatolan shepherd and a purebred kangal dog. This dog definetly IS an anatolian shepherd. All dogs from turkey are named like this, they just have to be a strong and big livestock protection dog. They can have the size of a kangal dog, but mostly they are smaller and they can have more colours than beige with black head (like a kangal dog).

Anatolians range from 80-160lbs depending on the bloodlines etc. The dogs size has absolutely nothing to do with its guarding ability or ability to fight of predators. A 25lb mutt can scare a bear away, just needs the ferocity to do it. So I believe the one in the clip is an Anatolian, just a rough coat and small.

A fully grown purebred Kangal is much larger than that, and you don't want to be in its vicinity when a herd protection is concerned, believe me -and it takes its owner family as its pack as well. It is not the most intelligent dog either, so rather like "Igor" of the canines. All it knows is to defend its pack for life. It keeps the count of their herd so well, even if one sheep lags behind, it won't let the doors shut. Keeps alien sheep out too.
