My wifes old ford taurus was doing this after she ran it out of coolant. I didn't get the chance to do anything with it before she sold it though.
My bet is on a cracked or warped head from overheating. You are burning water/coolant and what you are seeing is steam. Worst case scenario is a cracked cylinder wall. Either way it is a lot of work.
Kyle you saying that you never seen anything like this ever in your life, until last year I did not know that from the exhaust pipe may sense the brown smoke when in my car broke down the flowmeter.
@Cadillac198832011 thanks for the help mine smokes almost immediately after start up and distinctly smells of burning oil. it is bluish grey and started off smoking just a little at traffic lights and progressively got worse. i also noticed signifigant oil loss at my next oil change interval(about 2 quarts came out) i was using mobil 1 full-synth and it was black=(does this sound indicative of a turbo failure?? thanks again in advance for any input offered.
@greaseman12 sounds just like the way mine started to go you might have to change you catylic converter if it is soaked inside with oil I got lucky and mine was saveable
all I had to do was replace the turbo and the smoking stopped fixed it over a month ago and the smoking is still gone. what most people dont know with turbos is the you have to let the car idle before shutting it off so the oil inside the turbo can cool down otherwise the hot oil in the turbo warps the turbine. as let your turbo warm up when its cold before you use it
after you put in the turbo, did you have to do anything else to stop the smoke? im having the same issue with my 1997 900 se convertible. any help would be appeciated thanks!
Black smoke is burning oil. Blue smoke is usually transmission fluid due to a leaking modulator valve in the older auto transmission. White smoke is due to water getting in to a cylinder from a bad gasket, cracked block or a cracked head. cracked heads.
Here's is my advice, if it's the turbo, will soon accelerates with horrible white smoke, and you WON'T BE ABLE TO SHUT DOWN THE ENGINE! remember this : put it on the 5th gear and quickly release the pedal. it's the only way to do it,
may be the valve seals or piston rings, if headgasket belive me it'll be horrible and won't ever runs like that, how long it has been parked before you start it on this vid ?
so your mechanic is just gonna rev it going "well I wonder what it is" BANG!!! blown engine. blown head gasket means coolant is possibly mixing with the oil by the sight of that "chocolate milk" around the oil fill, water in engine oil=dead engine after reving. seafoam is worse, smells like sulfur with dead fish.
You all are idiots. It's not direct injected and it needs a turbo. If u read the "di" cassette it says direct ignition. And it isn't an "se" so it has a garrett grenade not a td04. Roflmao.
Also if you have a blue/ grey smoke coming from the exhaust like the one in this video it is the turbo. It's either broken or the seals have failed and it is pulling the oil through the exhaust and burning it. I think thats right anyway.
saab ECO POWER it says under the hood. lol. Very eco friendly I must say. You can tell it's the turbo because it's burning oil in the exhaust. My dad had a Mercedes Van and the turbo blew up completely doing 85mph at 3000rpm. It had previously had a whole new exhaust 2 weeks before and when the turbo blew he couldn't turn off the engine, so he had to stall it. But the oil had been pulled through the particulate filter and it would of failed it's MOT. New exhaust + new turbo = £££££
Easy Turbo gone - probably not changing the oil often enough, and or using low grade oil, which results in the sludging issue... the oil pickup gets sludged up, which starves the turbo.
Touch wood, mines got 140k on it with no issues running @ 230bhp stage 1... I do change the oil every 5k'ish with fully syn though, and don't do many short journeys.
I know this is an old video..but I have a 1993 ford tempo (real bucket...) and it did the exact same thing. We put in a water pump (which was a bitch to get to because it was UNDERNEATH the car near the right front tire..we replaced the alternator etc...oil changes, and all the other fluids..it still did it..we figured just junk it..not much you can do.
The motor mounts are shot. Park the vehicle on a level surface with good ventilation. Run the engine at 2,000 RPM's for at least 50 minutes or until the smoking stops, whichever comes first.
This is a self correcting problem. Park the car with the emergency brake on and then run the engine at high RPM's for 50 minutes just like you were doing in the video. The smoke will stop and the engine will be like new.
thats what happens when you dont whait a few seconds before shutting down the turbo still spins fast with no oil pressure and blow up the oil seal bearings
Judging by the look of the dipstick theres water in the oil. I would guess head gasket or a blown turbo both a fairly common problem on these engines, could be related to an oilsludge problem caused by clogged or bad crank case ventilation which is also a common problem on these engines.
head gasket i think if it was burning oil the smoke would be like blue oil and petrol mixing but thats just steam deffo the head gasket the stuff round the oil cap says it all oil and water makes like a mayonaise stuff round the cap oil and water mixing so its the head gasket
I have the same problem my 1999 9-3 turbo Oh yes it smokes like your. I did compression check on all cylinders 3 close to 180 one was 165. when I took out the spark plugs I found one with oil all over it also had lots on top of the piston and some of blow-by from the block, so im doing a new head gasket. The turbo looks new I hope I am doing the right thing!
@johnef805 165 PSI is PLENTY of compression. If there was oil in your cylinder and it had 165 PSI of compression you've got some other issue. Was the valve cover leaking into the plug hole? I'd only be worried about head gasket failure if the compression was under about 125 or so.
that's not the head gasket, because you would be able to tell because it would have low compression in turn turning over very slowly, might be the turbo.that is what i think
that's not the head gasket, because you would be able to tell because it would have low compression in turn turning over very slowly, might be the turbo.
that's not the head gasket, because you would be able to tell because it would have low compression thus turning over very slowly, might be the turbo.
This just happened to our ford taurus. It did a blow a headgasket, except she didnt smoke on start up. She just died going down the road. She can go a couple of miles still, but the engine coolant leaked into the oilpan and it will overheat/die after a short drive.
its a bad turbo. Head gaskets always go between numbers 1 and 2 or 2 and 3 cylinders. Also, its starts way too easy to have water in the cylinders. All head gaskets will be associated with hard or slow cranking with a sound of low compression. Common problem... people don't change their oil enough and the pump screens or oil feed line to the turbo get clogged. burns the bronze ushings out. Have had a few heads with no cold start problems though. good luck! remember new head bolts with repair!
Yes, this is a classic failure with the Saab B205E engine.
Changeing turbo is not the fix for this fail. The engine (B205E, 2,0liter 150 bhp turbo engine) have problems with the crankcase breather wich causes oilsludge and failure to oil pump, oil pressure and turbo.
I have 1 hand experience with this shit, this failure costed me about 9000 usd (50 000NOK)
when i worked at o'reilys auto we had a guy comein buyin antfreeze...started it up and within 20 seconds the car dissapeared i9n the smoke....he didn't even want to price a head gasket kit for it
Most everybody here says blown head gasket. After watching other videos of the same problem, I would agree. It's the first thing to check, though if the turbo is water cooled, that might be it as well. But not very likely. It looks like classic blown head gasket, and as I said, that is a common problem with these engines. Usually it occurs at the first cylinder, RHS facing front. You may see signs of leakage too. I've heard it said that it's a flaw in the engine block casting.
I drive a Saab B204 turbo and had a leaky head gasket at 50K and a blown turbo at 110K. I could see the head gasket leak signs on the engine - look for oil at the head line, drivers' side - it usually happens on that side for some reason. The blown turbo spat out blueish-white smoke. Both are common problems with these engines, and both are reparable without too much difficulty.
You need to figure out if it's oil or water/coolant you're blowing out the tailpipe. It's white and you didn't complain about smell, so it's likely steam. And it looks like steam. Oil is usually blueish and there's not quite that much of it. And burnt engine oil smells like it (due to the sulfur).
Quick test - wipe out the inside of the tailpipe, then run the engine a short while, then wipe again and observe the film. Oil will leave a sticky, dirty residue.
and always I listen my car after I used it and can hear the low speed fan works for 10 seg after shut off the engine.
I recommended this web for everybody who owne this babys it very usefully
google it
saabproject>com
Saab 900 SE 2.0T 97''
byway use full Synthetic oil, this keep the turbo and engine very protect and do it on time every 4000 mille should be ok... 5w-30 winter - 10w-30 summer, I use mobil1 full Synthetic...
the fan cool has this resistance and when burnout just the high speed work but that mean all the system work at 10C to 15C more hot than the regular operation cause more stress on radiator and condenser and you can see some leak... I have to change my radiator for that and thermostat, because the radiator blow out for high pression I see this and I fix it just on time before get some damage the engine...
I no sure but look like turbo. I have one I get it at 120.000 and now is 140.000 two year without problem, but I can tell you some just check the fan cool this car has a two speed fan cool. and they use small resistance the low speed work all the time when the ac is on, and sometime every 5 min o 10min depend temp when ac it off, high speed come when the temperature go too high and this step it like protection or backup speed system.
Head gasket is most likely. The white smoke is water entering the cylinders and being vented through the exhaust which happens if the head gasket has blown. Another sign is the milky/brown residue in the oil filler cap where the water has mixed with the engine oil. The engine head will have to be removed and may need to be skimmed if it has warped otherwise the new gasket will not seal and will start to smoke again.
its gonna be head gasket, if the turbo was gone you would get blue smoke there, also check the top radiator hose after leaving it for 10 mins, if you have loads of pressure in the pipe its deffo headgasket
If you recall when you test drove it you said there was some turbo whine so maybe it's the turbo that has blown. Though if it's revving and the power and the boost is stlll there with the turbo it is probably the head gasket. What was the frequency/quality of the oil change history when you took it in? These engines are finicky if not looked at after with fully synthetic oil changes at no more than 5,000 mile intervals for the whole of their lives.
its the turbo

@collinsup Yep, turns out it was the turbo after all! The video will be coming next day or so

All that said - it's steam.

the fan cool has this resistance and when burnout just the high speed work but that mean all the system work at 10C to 15C more hot than the regular operation cause more stress on radiator and condenser and you can see some leak... I have to change my radiator for that and thermostat, because the radiator blow out for high pression I see this and I fix it just on time before get some damage the engine...

I no sure but look like turbo. I have one I get it at 120.000 and now is 140.000 two year without problem, but I can tell you some just check the fan cool this car has a two speed fan cool. and they use small resistance the low speed work all the time when the ac is on, and sometime every 5 min o 10min depend temp when ac it off, high speed come when the temperature go too high and this step it like protection or backup speed system.

when u checked the oil was it milky
Bajaheat 1 year ago
Head gasket is most likely. The white smoke is water entering the cylinders and being vented through the exhaust which happens if the head gasket has blown. Another sign is the milky/brown residue in the oil filler cap where the water has mixed with the engine oil. The engine head will have to be removed and may need to be skimmed if it has warped otherwise the new gasket will not seal and will start to smoke again.

did the person put seafoam b4 he gave u the car..?? =DDD
kesryth12 1 year ago
its gonna be head gasket, if the turbo was gone you would get blue smoke there, also check the top radiator hose after leaving it for 10 mins, if you have loads of pressure in the pipe its deffo headgasket

Did you figure out the issue yet? Head gasket? Turbo? If so, curious what it cost to fix it.
meg4to 1 year ago
If you recall when you test drove it you said there was some turbo whine so maybe it's the turbo that has blown. Though if it's revving and the power and the boost is stlll there with the turbo it is probably the head gasket. What was the frequency/quality of the oil change history when you took it in? These engines are finicky if not looked at after with fully synthetic oil changes at no more than 5,000 mile intervals for the whole of their lives.
