so, the fact that the OVA has an ending, does that mean that the manga is technically over in Japan now, or does it just mean they made their own ending? (I haven't been able to find anything above volume four, in stores or online...)

yes, the manga has been over. It's a total of 13 volumes, and the last volume came out before the 2nd OVA episode was released. The OVA is kind of an extra side story to the manga, so while it doesn't have the same ending, it can easily fit into the original storyline.

I bought the limited edition DVD boxset at AmazonJP, which has it for the lowest price but comes with an expensive international shipping... At least that shipping lets me get my items the very next day, so I can't complain. The total for it came out to $90.
