What I think is so interesting about this scene is that the real Monty Brogan isn't talking. It's like his concious is talking to him and you can watch him wincing over what it says to him. He is ashamed of it, but mostly it comes back to criticize him and he can't handle it. Edward Norton has to be the best actors of all time, hands down. I agree with somebody else that he should have won awards for most, if not all of his movies. 25th Hour is one of his finest pieces. Made me cry. Must see.
