  • seems like they should be running more. i see confederates retreating by just wlaking away from the northern line not 15 feet from them under fire.

  • EPIC!

  • age of empire 3 lol

  • The funny part is our group portrays the 9th virginia and they charged over the union defences in one spot with Lewis Armistead... I'm the flag bearer and that is going to be amazing at the big 150

  • @9thvareenacting Ill see you at the wall mate :) Btw, my Great (Very great) grandfather fought with the 9th Virginia in the Revolutionary war. I have yet to find any confederates in my lineage but believe me, I am looking! I have 2 ancerstors proven Yankees though.

  • I was informed in September that I'd have to relocate from Arizona to Northern Virginia, in order to avoid being laid off. While shocked by the news, I felt some comfort (Southern Comfort) in knowing I would fulfill a Bucket-List dream of witnessing the re-creations at Gettysburg in 2012!

  • I'm sure it's fun to be a part of the event and all, but I wouldn't prefer this re-enactment over SCA's wars. In parts of the video you can see people clearly ignoring being mowed down, while of course there are obviously others taking hits reasonably, I assume the side that wins is the one that historically won, without exception? In SCA, Whether with arrows, crossbows, the occasional catapaults, or the obvious mass of various melee weaponry, getting hit is literal. The side that wins, wins :P

  • For Dixie!

  • Now thats what I call pickett's walk! :D

  • It's hard to appreciate the big bang after every cannon shot.. I went to a reenactment today, those things make HUGE noise.

  • I can't help but think that this is a perfect time to commit a murder

  • At 1:42, that's us (1st Division ANV) getting destroyed. That guy with the white hat running away to the left? Da's me! lol

  • Can you imagine actually being in this battle in 1863....having people charge at you across the field or being the ones that charged?

  • Everyone drove to the battle that morning, faught, then drove home

  • @theone2225 Let's try and beat the traffic...

  • @skeezysquirrel prolly why the south lost.....they left early to beat the traffic

  • outstanding spectacle!!! If only Lee would of listened to Longstreet...

  • also, what sucks is too many rebels decided to make it to the wall. I was in the last brigade - Armistades - we were the only ones that were supposed to even hit the wall. But all these southerners who drove 17 hours to go there said 'screw it, i'm going to the wall' -- lame, actually. Since I was with Armistead's brigade, i did go to the wall, but I vow that i'm gonna take a hit at all of these other anniversary events.

  • effing awesomely done!

  • I know that we cant get every detail right but there is one thing that bothers me more than anything else from civil war to WW2 reenacting; 50% of the reenactors are MASSIVE fat asses. Ok, I get it, you want to have a great hobby and keep history alive then why dont you keep yourself alive and lay off the brats and beer for a while. It is the singe most visable historical flaw; I doubt any one could weigh 360lbs after marching from the gulf of mexico to pennsylvania on limited supplies.

  • @Messier83 they're also far too old

  • @Messier83 I could not agree more with you. I've been part of a "hardcore" Union unit for about 9 years and it does get annoying going to events where about 2/3 of the reenactors are noticeably overweight. It really limits what you can do because you can't do anything over long distances because they are so out of shape. The only thing that bothers me more then a fat reenactor is a fat, farby reenactor, lol.

  • @Messier83 LOL, yet again I heard CW soldiers ate in excess of 5,000 calories a day. They were only like 140 pounds I believe but the only difference that cant be changed is that reenactors are probably a good half foot taller than their civil war counterparts

  • @Messier83 Yeah, also the uniforms were sometimes just torn to rags and very dirty back the because they had been wearin the same uniform the whole time where at these reenactments they always have clean clothes and nice pares of shoes where many soldiers back then didn't even have shoes. I've always though reenactments are alot funner for people with little Civil War knowledge than for civil war buffs who like to see the actual battlefields more.

  • @Messier83 Look on the bright side, their love of Civil War history equals their massive girth!

  • @Messier83

I reenact for years and thats the only thing what bothers me and that

are obese reenacters. Back then, nobody was of the middle class was fat

because there was less food to eat and hard labor to do.

  • @Messier83 Is it just me, or do I not see any reall big peoploe in this video? Yes there are some... But the majority seem to be skinny.

  • Hey guys, this is a "reenactment". I've been reenacting for 21 years. Each of us say that the others don't "take hits" or "wear kevlar" or "weebles wabble, but they don't fall down.

There are only so many of us, we will take a hit and when the troops pass back over us as they move, we "resurrect".

You know, you do have to have an imagination and use it. If you notice there are no body parts or bloody bits flying around!

    Get a sense of humor!

BTW, that's me in the Gray uniform!!

  • @pizmyr I didn't see one these damn bastard yankees take any hits I was at that reenactment and they should have reenacted this battle correctly. Contrary to what some people might think the yankees still took a lot of casualties at the wall. Maybe someday they will get it right but I guess they had to get to the dry cleaners at a certain time so they could clean their fancy blue suits.

  • @iraqveteran1 Another thing..how come the Yanks didn't pull back from the wall when Armistead approached it to let him through? After all, the 71st Pa retreated and the 72nd PA refused to advance.

  • @epitctroll- idk what reenactors you have seen, but i reenact yankee and i just returned from an event where i took hits in every battle, even when the officers tried to tell us not to. i see reenactors from both sides not taking hits at almost every event

  • to all the ppl questioning the number of yankee casualties... you do know that the southen troops were ordered to not stop and fire. and that the yankees won. also the casualties would be in the front, and blocked by the yankees standing in the back

  • @mlafferty1100 No it's because Union reenactors don't "die" because they don't want to get their uniforms dirty.

  • to all the ppl questioning the number of yankee casualties... you do know that the southen troops were ordered to not stop and fire. and that the yankees won

  • maybe its me, but i barely saw any yanks "die"

  • Now THAT Was AWESOME!

  • Haha looks about like every reeanactment I've been in.no matter how many times you shoot them yanks they just don't die.lol

  • Hmmmm ... i didn't seem to see a single Union soldier fall in any of the Confederate attacks. Didn't the North lose any soldiers at Gettysburg????????

  • @jflinn210 At 2:58- 2:59 you can see a Union soldier, to the left fall. The Union during the reenactment lost troops but they are not that easy to see most of the time.

  • @redsoul888 And immediately after seeing that one soldier fall, a Yankee officer turns his horse to the rear and gallops off.

  • @jflinn210 Not one casualty. Pretty amazing. Almost as amazing as killing Confederate soldiers by firing up into the air rather than at the approaching enemy :)

  • @Soonerborn03 we fire into the air for safety reasons these are real weapons we are using

  • Epic

  • Amazing that those Confederate skirmishers didn't score a single hit after four volleys. What terrible shots they must have been.

  • @AIgernon it's that yankee kevlar they always seem to wear, lol (happens at almost every event)

  • @WestVirginiaGOP amen to that.

  • Who are the red guys in the federal ranks?

  • @blacklegionairsoft1 if you mean the guys with the red pants? Those are called "Zouave" soldiers. That just means their uniform style is a French cut.

  • @WestVirginiaGOP

Oh, so they just had a different uniforms?

  • @blacklegionairsoft1 Yeah, they had a much fancier uniform than the other regiments. If you do a search for Zouave soldiers, I'm sure you'll find lots of pictures and see how their uniforms are much fancier than the rest.

  • @WestVirginiaGOP

    Gotcha. Thanks man.

  • @blacklegionairsoft1

"Zouaves". lots of fire departments went together and formed units. These uniforms are copies of French uniforms. The style became very popular, even in women's fashions. The pants are cut with a long crotch. Very distinct. The men were proud to wear this uniform and it was worn by both sides.

  • canister fire the last 400 yards?? seems ineffective at 400 yards.. did he mean 40 yards??

  • Was there for 125th, 130th, 135th, and 145th with 20th Maine. One of the most memorable was either 130th or 135th when we marched up from Frederick, Maryland, camped on an original campsite, and marched in through the crowds during the battle as fresh (a very relative word) reinforcements. I'm planning on the 150th again with the 20th ME or I might try the 146th NY Zouaves for new perspective.

  • That brings back memories, I was with the Confederate skirmish line, died before we even got to the fence. Still a lot of fun though. Thanks for posting this.

  • so.. how are you supposed to know if youre hit?

  • @corporateCoffee Generally it's what makes sense, if a volley or a cannon is fired at you, you know you go down. Sometimes it's when you get tired or run out of ammunition, but at certain events they put a different colored cartridge in your cartridge box and whenever you draw that one, you go down, regardless if it's the first one or not.

  • @SuperMEntertainment

    hmm. thanks for the insight..

so if the enemy fires a volley, theoretically might everyone on the receiving end go down thinking "Ah its a volley Im dead" ?

  • @corporateCoffee yes, and it's about putting on a good show, we're all pretty much actors and the fields there are our stages. Many of the events I participate in around where I live which are tiny compared to Gettysburg, and a lot of times we only start taking hits when our commanding officers tell us to. These generally only have 2-300 reenactors total in battles that generally last about an hour, so in those instances we have to wait till a certain point before we start dying off.

  • @SuperMEntertainment

Very cool. Appreciate it; I love watching these events. I know loads of time, money, and effort goes into it and the result is awesome. Stay frosty.

  • epic.

  • By the way, the real Pickett's Charge was on my Birthday.

  • Why are the muskets so quite? I've heard a musket shot before and it's LOUD.

  • @monkey6321 Probably because they are firing blanks - that might make some difference. You wouldn't want to fire real bullets at people! :D

  • @monkey6321 the person recording is also at quite a distance from the action and its hard to get the "crack" sound from this distance. also the field is expansive

  • they should put some live explosives under ground to simulate the cannon fire..that would be awesome!

  • @divinesense that would be a really cool idea, i agree. There must be a way of doing it without hurting anyone. Sort of like the movie set of Gettysburg, without people jumping up into the air etc.

  • i cant find a reenactment group in central kentucky if anybody can find one pmme

  • the sound on these videos just doesnt do these events justice

  • gettysburg reenactment sucks, nothing like picketts charge,,try going to our events,,the VALLEY DIVISION under general rc pratt who started anv

  • 2:14 1st California!

  • Comment removed

  • I want to say from the start - i'm a reenactor. I was there. I was IN ARMISTEAD'S brigade. I was also at the 130th Gettysburg where i was NOT in Armistead's Brigade. We HAD to take casualties and/or fall back when we hit the road. I can't believe how many kept going forward when they weren't supposed to at this battle.

  • Where's the artillery barrage?

  • does anyone else find the comments over the loudspeaker intrusive?

  • Looks more like Picketts Walk than Picketts Charge.

  • @Rusfi16 inform me of when you can get 15000 men to run for a mile with 30 pounds of gear and a musket,

  • omg the commentator. this is horrible how tourism ruined it.

having to describe what skirmishers are...

  • @ironbmike isnt the whole idea to allow people who are interested a chance to better understand what it was like and to learn something. Otherwise it would just be a whole lot of guys mucking around in fancy dress...

  • What the hell is going on? Sounds like he is eating a fucking bag of potato chips. If your going to film something like this you shouldn't be eating. It really is annoying.

  • @thetaz00 That's Musket fire.

  • That was a sweet thing to be a part of. I'm glad I didn't have to listen to the local high school announcer explain what was going on...

  • No Rebel Yell that day?

  • Back in fifth grade my class took a field trip to the Gettysburg battlefield and we rienacted th whole Pickett's Charge and I got to be captain of my class.

  • ive been to gettysburg but never seen a reenactment. it must be pretty amazing to see in person. i wonder how many reenactors there are versus how many soldiers we re really there.

  • @panzerdragoonSS I'm sure that the 150th will have the same number if not more than what took place.

  • @panzerdragoonSS my neighbore does this and he does revolutionary war stuff- for one of his battles there was 800 brits and 1200 americans ( if that gives a a good idea of the amount of people)

  • @panzerdragoonSS I believe we had around 8000-9000 that year. If it was a 1:1 size thing, they'd need a bigger field...

  • @GovVance thats still a lot. it must be quite a site to see.

  • this looks like it would be fun to attend. I need to get to one of these reenactments one of these days. Thanks for posting.

  • Men who answered the call of duty.

They had no reservations. History is fact.

  • UMMMM---Its cemetery RIDGE!!!!!---anyway zacher456!!!!!!!!!!!!!----learn history before you put someone else down!!!!!!! idiot

  • i didn't know they had cameras that long ago!

  • I was at the 135th anniversary! My uncle and grandpa participated in the battle on the side of the Union. I was only 10 years old but was dressed as a Gettysburg civilian. So much fun for a kid who had never been off the West Coast before.

  • Wow great footage

  • did anyone notice the cannons shooting in the background?

  • that was a terrific video, thanks for posting

  • what I wouldn't give to watch an actual replay of all the greatest battles

  • where do they reenact the battle?

  • @lortay5408 In Canada

  • @UACmarine2O8 actually we reenacted it at gettysburg pennsylvania

  • Comment removed

  • @24thvolunteer I was joking...

He should've known this was in Gettysburg anyways.

How much did you pay for your uniform? How much is the rifle?

I plan to get reenacting the Civil War.

  • @UACmarine2O8 jacket=$100 hat=$100 rifle(depends on the type)=$800 defarbed

all together for everything i own ive spent around $2000. and i know u were kidding but there are idiots who believe anything.

my equipment is musuem grade im a "hardcore" as labeled my most mainstreamers. but if you go to falls creek u can get a good starter kit for cheap. and most units have loner gear until u get everything u need

  • If im 15 during the 150th reenactment, do you think i can fake my age? so i can be infantry

  • Im going to the reenactment in 2013 but does anybody know if your a reenactor if they feed u or u need to bring your own cooking supplies?

  • @bowiebackyard bring ur own always

  • Gawd I HATE how so few people fall down! When I grow up, I want to be in one of these reenactment JUST for the sake of falling down and "dying" to add to the realism.

  • @mappoprimo well technically u shouldnt see many union die

  • does anybody know the name of the pennsylvania regiment that won the marching contests name? they got some kind of uniform

  • I'm a Revolutionary War reenactor, but man, the size of this alone makes me want to put together a Yankee kit. Holy hell that is impressive.

  • 2:03

    green red and white ??

que hace esa bandera italiana o mexicana allí ?

  • @alblynch I think that is Orange, not Red. That might be an Irish Regiment

  • que aburricion,

  • wasnt the fighting 69th NY at gettysburg?

  • @orckiller91 Yes but by that time there were hardly any Irish left

  • @SLICSfootbaby I think he made a mistake when he said the 69th "Pennsylvania" marked by the Green Emerald flag

  • @SLICSfootbaby ok thank you, I thought they where there and didnt they take a beating at an earler battle?

  • @orckiller91 Yes, at Antietam they charged teh Sunken Road and took 60% casualties and after Chancellorsville there were only 300 left.

  • @orckiller91 Never mind, I made an incorrect assumption, he is right. The 69th Penn. was an Irish regiment and was at gettysburg.

  • @SixFootBabyStudios and this is SLICSfootbaby's other youtube profile

  • Really nice vid!...

  • Nice video of this massive reenactment! I think I saw some of this on the history channel!

  • Yea I think I would wait for a few volleys then lay screaming in agony for about 10 mins and then just chill and watch the show, front row!

  • i was one of the confederate skirmishers. in the line of kneeling troopers at about 2:47 i think i'm the 10th or 11th one from the left. i can't wait for the 150th. go 12th texas cav!

  • when you get shot do you have to stay down the entire time?

  • I will be going to the 150th, so will the rest of my family. I am ashamed to say I did not make the 135th, wish I had, but I agree, the 150th will be like twice the size of the 135th, can't wait!

  • I had fun at the 145th and Lord willing will be back for the 150th.

  • Pretty impressive for firing into the air and hardly anybody pretending to die, whole regiments fire into a line and like 3 people fall....

  • If we fire level at close range, we will burn the other guy's face off. The 1861 Springfield shoots a 5 foot flame out the end of the muzzle. For safety reasons we always elevate at close distances.

  • That is very interesting, I wonder why people can shoot right into other peoples face in the movies. I bet blanks in modern guns do not have the same problem.

I asked a friend about this too and he said just in case anyone left their ramrod in their gun, but that ramrods were probably banned by the time this was filmed for just that reason.

  • Well it has happened. Ramrods fly across the field like steel arrows and have killed people before. We are told not to even touch them or we will be removed from the battle.

At the 135th Gettysburg a man was shot in the neck because a man from France borrowing a friend's pistol didn't check or clean it after they had been live firing it the day before. A bulltet fragment that was stuck in the pistol came out and almost killed the man it hit. I was on the field that day and it was scary.

  • Damn, that is messed up...people are idiots.

I wanna see one of these things, I think being in it would be awesome omg... how easy can you do this? Do you need your replicas?

  • @zapo147 Ya I know, its to bad your comment got so many thumbs down, but I totally agree - when I grow up, I'm gonna be in this reenactment just for the sake of dying. People seriously don't take it seriously enough! MORE DYING PEOPLE!!! :)

  • irish flag ,not mexican.

  • The Flag is Italian for the Garibaldi Guards the 39th New York DEO ET POPOLO is whats written on it

    we fought hard that weekend

  • why the mexican flag is there??

  • @maxdeniel that's the 39th New York flag, the Garibaldi Guards named after The Italian Freedom Fighter. The Mexican flag is similar to the Italian flag but with some stuff in the middle.

  • alright, that was kinda of a fail, the guys that were shot have to stay on the ground not get up and walk away! and the union cannons would have been firing as the confederates advanced!

  • I really love history. :)

  • get real

  • i love the Confederate drum beat lol it the same in the movie LOVE IT LOL

  • How do they know when to fall down? looks like fun

  • basically, u fall when u feel the moment is right, like after a round is fired or if u feel tired and want to take a nap :)

  • boy does this look fun!! I wanna do it!

  • @TheFnNatural imagine what it must've been like in real life!!

  • the scene is very real! on tv an old veteran said the smoke covered the entire field................fortunately something is missing from this modern scene. the arms, legs, heads, rifles, cantines, hats, etc. all flying in the air above the smoke!

  • this is a really nice reenactment. it really puts into perspective for me the battle

  • the Italian flag was for the Garibaldi Guard they were Italian, German, Hungarian, Swiss and Spanish.

I was there with the gallant 7th Ohio we were at the angle we lost many of our brave men,

  • i think you will find that you are blurring the distinction between reality and pretence. brave men? big fat lazy oafs waddling around having stuffed their faces just before and no doubt afterwards too! You lost your "men" in the food tents i think.....

  • another thing i think you need to do is mabe go out there and fight it your self. WHat we do is put ourself in the positon to understand reality of what happened. The Regiments we portray carry a name, a name that we preserve and cherish. The reenactors of the 7th Ohio do well at that thank you very much, Second these reenactors take alot of time and effort to show what happened here ant to commemorate the fine Men and boys that faught here.

  • Are you with the 7th Ohio?

  • Yes i portray my ancestors both of whom were in Co E. From Huron Ohio. One faught 3 years and was wounded at Dallas Georgia in 1864. the other died after a year in 1863. They were part of the Rooster Regiment and i am honored to be able to live their experience as close as i can

  • Excellent, I had family fight in Ohio Regiments as well.

    Inf: 25th, 42nd, 93rd, 96th, 105th, 122nd, 123rd.

Cav: 9th (William Prouty captured, died at Andersonville on 24 May, 1864).

    Artillery: 14th Light battery

The National Archives Soldier/Sailor website has 13 Prouty's, but Pension records, state adjutant books and our genealogy book, all claim more served, we have their names, reg's etc. Many served in the same regiments listed above.

  • The 7th Ohio was routed on 26 Aug, 1861 at "Kessler's Cross Lanes" in now West Virginia. By BG. Floyd's men.

The 7th lost their "Stars and Stripes" National flag captured.

At Cedar Mountain, the 7th Ohio lost the most men of all Union regiments. Posted on the extreme right of Geary's Brigade they had a vicious crossfire. The 7th Ohio found on the ground the State Flag of the 5th Connecticut inf. The 5th Conn's National flag was captured by the 5th Va.

  • RJ Cross from the 81 illinois, wow this is a great vid wow wish i could have been there shoot im a massac dude so yeah far travel but so fun

  • I do wonder if the same narrator was on loud speaker during the original battle...probably not..he was busy eating fry bread from the fry bread guy me thinks...

  • He'll attack right up that rocky slope, and up that gorgeous field of fire. And we will charge valiantly, and be butchered valiantly. And afterwards youtube kiddies will rate it 5 stars and say what a brave charge it was.

  • Epic comment....period.

  • @sebs42

    Major lol :)

  • @sebs42 Haha nice

  • @sebs42 you are too awesome.

  • @sebs42 thats mcphersons ridge and a reference to little round top the first. wrong day bro

  • @24thvolunteer True, and it's also said by the wrong side.

  • @sebs42 no general beauford said that because he thought the johnnies were gonna get on the roundtop hills first, which if it wasnt for general ewells stupidity they would have. thank god beaufords vision did not come true.

  • @24thvolunteer first off its buford second he was reffering to culps hill and cemetery hill tohse hills commanded the town..idiot learn names and history before you post..

  • y the italian flag? ppl were just standing around

  • at 1:45 i think all/most of those confederates would be dead if this were real lol.
