Question: If I was charged with a misdemeanor for drug paraphernalia in the U.S. over ten years ago, will that prevent me from enlisting in the French Foreign Legion? I have no felonies and am not a drug user. Yes... I was a marijuana smoker, but have been clean for some time. If anyone knows the answer to this question that would be much appreciated! Thanks.

There is a school for commissioned officers you can attend after your initial 5-year enlistment. Also, there were no French in the FFL before France ended military conscription. All those guys were Belgian.

It seems that of the few vids I've seen of the legion at Aubagne most of the recruits seem to speak french pretty well. Or at least understand it pretty good. Are these vids decieving(?), or are most at a loss with the language?
@dmcc20012 Yeah but I highly recomend you to go to aubagne because that's the main base and you will have to go there for medical checks whereever you sign up.
If they reject you you will be stuck in aubagne (north of marseille)
Sorry dude my doctor came back with my test results today (decided to get a full checkup) and it turns out that I have a problem with my spinal and if even tried joining the legion their doctors would kick me out fast.

@mcjock1983 the reason for shaving in modern armies is mainly because hygiene and also because of Nuculer biological and chemical war. IE gas masks have to perform a tight seal around the face 3 days growth can effect that seal.

Ofc its hard, but if you're fit it shouldn't be a problem. Most squadleaders are from the regular french army(officers in training etc), so you don't really need brains, except for 2 REP etc.
Officers are from the regular French army, not squad leaders get it right before posting comments about the FFL. The USMC is a very PC organization catering to homos and women. Frances military history is nothing to be proud of but the FFL still serves French intrests and will continue to be a beacon in stormy seas for men all around the world regardless of it's reality.

i searched a little and it turns out that if you have a US passport you won't need a visa (you don't need it if you stay less than 90 days to be exact.) You just need to bought your ticket and then find your way to the nearest french foreign legion recruitment office. There's a section about the FFL on the french ambassy website, you can just google map the adresses of the offices :)

you will not be expected to forget english, you will be expected to speak french though, especially when you are on duty and when you have been in the legion for a while. i plan on becoming a legionnaire, and i have to talked to a legionnaire from ireland (i live in ireland), so i'm quite informed.
I too plan on joining when I am 18 or out of college. I was even thinking about seventeen, but I realized that I would never make it back to finish my final year of high school, my parents were like "NO" Haha. Legion forever.
i'm considering civilian college to do a degree in french, german and international relations but there are part-time degrees, apprenticeships and training courses available in the legion, on top of your normal duties. i plan on spending at least 5 years in the legion so i would probably do another degree even if i already have a degree to avoid boredom in the barracks. check out the legion website man.

it doesn't necessarily disqualify you, but can be a disadvantage. try it mate, and join the american national guard while you're at it. i'm probably going to do a degree first, while doing that join the irish reserve defence forces. with a degree, already being able to speak french and prior military experience, unless you don't meet the fitness requirements or aren't mentally stable they would have no reason to turn you away, and you could potentially be fast-tracked for promotion very quickly.
Yeah definitely that would be a very appealing resume. I don't know about the National Guard, but ROTC and Army Reserve is a good option and pays for the college.

french will be taught to you in the legion. you can go there with just a few phrases, even just saying ''je suis une voluntaire pour la legion etrangere'' at the gates of fort de nogent will be enough. once you go to castel, french will be taught to you, and you will elarn it VERY quickly. i already know alot of french becuase i plan on joining when i'm 18.

Ofc its hard, but if you're fit it shouldn't be a problem. Most squadleaders are from the regular french army(officers in training etc), so you don't really need brains, except for 2 REP etc.

Officers are from the regular French army, not squad leaders get it right before posting comments about the FFL. The USMC is a very PC organization catering to homos and women. Frances military history is nothing to be proud of but the FFL still serves French intrests and will continue to be a beacon in stormy seas for men all around the world regardless of it's reality.

i searched a little and it turns out that if you have a US passport you won't need a visa (you don't need it if you stay less than 90 days to be exact.) You just need to bought your ticket and then find your way to the nearest french foreign legion recruitment office. There's a section about the FFL on the french ambassy website, you can just google map the adresses of the offices :)

you will not be expected to forget english, you will be expected to speak french though, especially when you are on duty and when you have been in the legion for a while. i plan on becoming a legionnaire, and i have to talked to a legionnaire from ireland (i live in ireland), so i'm quite informed.

i'm considering civilian college to do a degree in french, german and international relations but there are part-time degrees, apprenticeships and training courses available in the legion, on top of your normal duties. i plan on spending at least 5 years in the legion so i would probably do another degree even if i already have a degree to avoid boredom in the barracks. check out the legion website man.

16. perhaps man, if i go to college i will be able to join the legion as soon as i turn 21, and a prior degree, no matter what it is, can be very beneficial when it comes to selection. i'd need to clear a few things up first though such as get laser eye surgery.

it doesn't necessarily disqualify you, but can be a disadvantage. try it mate, and join the american national guard while you're at it. i'm probably going to do a degree first, while doing that join the irish reserve defence forces. with a degree, already being able to speak french and prior military experience, unless you don't meet the fitness requirements or aren't mentally stable they would have no reason to turn you away, and you could potentially be fast-tracked for promotion very quickly.

french will be taught to you in the legion. you can go there with just a few phrases, even just saying ''je suis une voluntaire pour la legion etrangere'' at the gates of fort de nogent will be enough. once you go to castel, french will be taught to you, and you will elarn it VERY quickly. i already know alot of french becuase i plan on joining when i'm 18.
