Everybody's right on in their assessment. Love these guys but the only thing they got right in this song is he didn't say "Jokers" and instead said "Jumpers," which is the correct name of the band to which the song referred. You are all correct. In the world of noise, of which music is a part, this sounds like puke looks.....
weak ass'd version of this song.. he makes so many late entro's and whoever thought the best performance was Vh has never been out of the house..and Hagar sucks...as much of an ass dave might have been or an ego-maiac.. he still kicked hagars ass vocally...there's a reason Montrose got rid of him...I'm not a big VH fan but this sucks....
@fajadody ugh I hated the whole red rocker crap... that's so phoney/poser. sammy was better in Montrose, after that blah. I'm no van halen fan....but I saw em both and Roth was clearly a better singer and showman in my opinion. I saw VH when on their first tour before their first record opening up for other people...Roth blows away hagar, for that type of music, VH needed Roth....I saw Hagar with Montrose back in the day.... hagar never had the energy Roth had.
@telecaster23 put the crack pipe down, ever see Sam w/ V.H.? Total pro ......nothing against Dave's stage presence but he was more into being a rock star than a singer not giving a shit about the paying audience. Half the time drunk off his ass ,forgetting words to his own lyrics acting the fool.dragging him to the stage and carrying him off. intertaining sure....up to a point but I'm not there to watch in party. Sammy never lost sight of why he there give me Sam anyday
@pdfontana Till this day the best Live performance by a Rock and Roll band was Van Halen in 1984! I would have to say Johnny Winter's performance at Texas Hall was right up there. Johnny,Eddy and Les are the best. If you want to see Sammy Hagar at his best catch him with his own band or listen to him when he was with Montrose. I felt sorry for Sammy every time I heard and saw him with Van Halen straining to hit the notes and be David Lee Roth. It basically drove him over the edge !
Early days is right...this was before they got a recording contract. This sounds like it was recorded in a nightclub, circa 1977. Actually it sounds like shiit!
Why does everybody hate this? I think it sounds wicked. Eddie's solos and fills sound awesome. Of course I like the original Derringer version, but I have to say, this isn't a bad cover.
I definitely hear the wah in there but the majority of the time it's his Phase 90 that I hear. A wah is a much more pronounced effect. Sounds to me like he left the phase on & hit the wah occasionally.
@njbill I hate when he uses a wah now, that mxr 90 in his hands kicked ass, with the mxr flanger it was over the top.The way he played it was so much more expressive than the usual wah sh*t.... Good ol' days (ps, why does everyone who got famous using Marshall amps endorse anything but?)
@wprestidge1 It's not a wah pedal. It's an MXR script logo Phase 90. Eddie used a Phase 90 alot, especially in the early days. Listen carefully, and you'll hear that it's a phaser, not a wah pedal.
@jamitt well of course he uses the 90, do you really think it has that much wah sound in this perticular song. ive heard the schools out bootleg where they do james gang walk away... he stomps on the phase 90 in the begining of the solo and its no where close tho the output of his wah pedal.... not saying im right but thats why i think its a wah.... anyways eddie plays this song like a top!!
@kentano2000 listen to the break at 1:35 the sweep opens up all the way really fast, drops back down and comes up slowly, sounds like a wah to me, but who knows :P
Thanks Tyler. Yeah, I hear that but assume it's the phaser since it isn't on until that point and then it kicks in. But the sweep is quite wide there! Maybe it is a wah for that 2 second segment? Weird, huh?
Eddie is one of the greatest musician and innovators I have ever seen and heard, but I do not believe he is the all time greatest guitarist of all time. That title must go to one of the old American Negro song writer and guitar player. Without their original input, we would not have Erik, page, Hendrix, the Beatles, the "British invasion", and on and on. To all who feel one guitars is greater than another, please go back and listen to the folks that created the genesis of ....
You must look at skipper8257's comment. I believe just about every humble musician will not admit to being the best. They know that they have taken bits and pieces of what has been created before them, and expounded on it. Music is an expression of art. As much as I do not enjoy Yoko, even what she did was "Art". Yoko inspired at least one major group... the B52's. Your comment is well taken by me.
There is no such thing as the greatest guitarist ever. When you get to this level it's all preference. What about Stevie Vai, Jeff Baxter and on and on it goes. Eddy's incredible but I would say Les Paul had the most influence on todays music. He invented the 4 track system and the repeat system. Even Eddy will tell you that. He did a show with Les and admitted just that.
Sorry but last time I checked, Les Paul shits on everyone. Can't touch that man's skill. Not to mention his contributions that evolved music into what it is today. Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
If the "Kidz" nowadays want to know what a Plexi Marshall, all knobs on 10 sounds like, no non-sense mods, no distortion pedal, etc, this is it, right here! Lots of roar, arm hairs moving in the breeze created by the speakers.
on my amp the distortion pedals actually help the sound. but that's cuz it's a shitty crate amp. when it gets overdriven enough the sound becomes so muddy that chords are impossible to play.
You KNOW i KNOW They KNOW...those are your kids...I very sexy princess bitch in a trunk on YOUR stage..!!!
