The original Fairport Convention line-up w/Sandy Denny was the best incarnation of the band. She had that ethereal voice that had all imitators frustrated and dumbfounded It's very sad she's no longer with us since her tragic accident many years ago. Another loss for the music industry who again dies so young like so many of them -
@danvers0549 Of course, you are correct - Judy was the first singer - forgot about her! Sandy was a better singer for the group anyways, so anyone before her is easily overlooked.
For many, many years ... I believed this to be a traditional English folk song .. then ... I learned that it had been written by Swarbrick and Thompson. What a lovely song ... it's passed into the tradition now ... hasn't it?
@Jarrahnut Indeed, it was intended to sound like a traditional song considering the lyrics. What a great job they did, didn't they? It is one of my all time favourites with awesome singing by Sandy...
Three-Quarter-Ale has a pretty good cover of this song as well. I'd recommend looking into them. They're a pretty fun tavern-yarn themed group often found at renaissance festivals.
harryf200 : Wish I could have heard you play. Keep on brother. The soul of and in music like this is the soul of all of us human beans. Pretty sure it's Richard Thompson on the git box - a distinctive tremolo, or maybe a Fender Twin on vibrato. Leige and Leif - Law and Life.
One of my favourite Sandy Denny songs. The purest of voices. So incredible, sometimes it is a voice beyond description. The beauty of it just brings you to tears! After all these years of her passing I still feel such sadness when I think of her untimely death.
Sandy Denny was an angel of all time and beauty. Heard this one over and over on a tape given to me by a classical musician friend back in '84. My life will always be filled with Fairport and Pentangle and Tull and Faithfull and all the rest - evermore. Peace Life Love Light
Sandy Denny is the only person i've ever heard do the phrasing on the song this way. She had a unique way of doing that with anything she sang. Her vocal on Genesis Hall is timeless.
This was an excellent band. We all loved them . Sandy Denny had the most beautiful voice. But then, so did Maddy Prior of Steeleye Span; she had a high and low range you couldn't forget.
@Nixie26 I imagine Maddy Prior is still singing, if not touring. Anyway for my tastes MP she is too much of a technical singer, SD had just as much power and precision but much more feeling.
There are some decent attempts at covering this song but only when you hear Sandy Denny's voice you realise how truly unique and magnificently beautiful it is.
hey, nice vid, i dont like to spam but check my account out if u like covers of folk, folk rock, classic rock, grunge, punk, country, psychedelic, and original songs, im sure ull enjoy it, thanks :)
Une des plus belles chansons de tous les temps . Fairport + Sandy Denny = que du bonheur! voir aussi Strawbs et Fotheringay (pas mal non plus) . On n'oublie pas Sandy.
Most music made today is made specifically for this time period, for this time in history. I love music like this because it elicits an emotional response, and if this song had been played for people living a hundred, two hundred, four hundred, six hundred years ago it would have elicited a similar, very strong emotional response from the listeners.
Wonderful, haunting, ethereal - there aren't enough adjectives to describe this track, nor to describe Sandy Denny's other-worldly voice. Thanks for posting.
What a pity we can't bottle the Christmas spirit and open it up whenever we feel dispirited. By the way, I'm an atheist. Banksiasong ... you sound a little dispirited ... hope you are soon feeling happier with life. Good luck!
Banksiasong: I was a volunteer fireman for several years; I raised a lot of funds for the local brigade; I've worked with marginalised people (volunteer prison work); I am a long-term blood donor (80-odd units): I am fighting to save Mundlimup Forest from being logged (non-beligerent action); oh ... and I own a house in Mandurah. Best wishes to you.
I had always thought this was an English traditional folk song. It was only in recent years that I learned that it was written by Swarbrick and Thompson. Absolutely beautiful. Greetings to one and all from Jarrahnut (Colin) in wonderful Western Australia.
@Jarrahnut: I understand you love WA, but constantly reading it at the end of your comments, at the same time as living the nightmare of climate change is beginning to wear on me. I'm not asking you to stop of course, it is sweet to hear someone has found a safe spot, but maybe remember the rest of us, eh?
Fighting bushfires, working with marginalised people, fighting racism, Mandurah under water in 30 years - that stuff.

This song takes me back to my youth. I was enchanted with it then and am enchanted with it still. Surely the test of brilliance is the test of time? Swarbrick, Prior just incredible, breathtaking in it's purity and simplicity.
