  • When did he alter the form? Crossing Talon, Fatal Deviation and Grip of Death are not present in this performance, while they are part of the form now. When did he change that?

  • Looks like kenpo came from Hung gar kung fu. Funny the salute is almost the same.

  • @esshung My thought too. I've discussed this with Gordon Liu and he at least agrees that it's possible.

  • Grandmaster Parker one of the true martial art masters of our time , thank you for postinf from ct

  • Awful

  • the big man could explode for sure. i often wonder if there would be so many critics if they could have felt a taste. i know alot of drama was in the mix, but the "pow" factor from mr parker, mr tatum, mr mills, etc. is a pretty brutal wake up call for anybody. it's not a ring art, its a " hey , i want to kick this guys ass why am i waking up on the ground" art. the demos are to long, the posing is outdated and silly to me , no disrespect, but the core art is no joke. its a street system.

  • All I have to say is wow. As a Kenpo Student and a musician I agree with @talon115. Our Sets and Forms are not meant as an "End All to Fighting" They are a method used to learn Muscle Memory and Finesse. Not to mention exploring different angles and learning your Techniques right and left handed .I really enjoy this form in particular because it focuses on "Grab Arts"

Thanks for posting this, it is always humbling to see Master Parker at work.

  • Sorry, but no stances or distinct strikes.

  • It's amazing how he performs the salutation so slowly and precisely, and then blasts into the form. Amazing power. XD

  • You're looking at Short Form 3 which although it is comprised of actual self-defence techniques is not employed to teach someone how to fight. Rather kenpo forms are a way to study the 'form' of your body movement so that you can maximise speed, power etc. They are an important exercise but represent just one facet of Kenpo. It is popular to think that forms are a waste of time. This would be true only if you don't understand the principles of body dynamics which they are designed to teach.

  • fast hands

  • What year was this video taken?

  • I think all forms and katas are a waste of time. But I will say that kenpo forms are the best looking.

  • @talon115 That's like saying it's a waste of time for a musician to practice scales. Yeah, sure, don't practice the basics, just perform! Uh-huh!

  • @talon115 think of a time when written forms or pictures were forbidden or subverted. forms and katas were a way to pass on knowledge. and even in todays arts we have the equal in combinations and sets of movement such as lock flows , stick and knife patterns and grappling drills. it's all the same, it would be a shame to dismiss hundreds of years of knowledge without digging a bit deeper . lyota machida does forms, and he has done pretty well. hell, jab, cross , hook, overhand right is a form.

  • In American Kenpo, the forms are not simulated fights as they are in some other arts. They are "catalogs" of Kenpo principles.

  • Excellent point. I'm glad someone else gets it.

  • @gotmama2 Not true. It depends.

  • @gotmama2 i think that when you really study kata from different systems, you'll see that they are chick-full of bunkai or "applications." Not the "acting out fighting 23 guys" that a lot of people seem to think they are.

  • Tatum performs this form with far more grace.

  • Tatum does not even compare to Mr. Parker. only ignorance of the system and principles would someone make a comment like that!

  • Please explain your comment.

  • That's good. Too bad the forms are supposed to be simulated fights and not dance recitals.

  • Incredable!
