I saw this TV series years ago.I loved it. It was my introduction to Jane Alexander who I greatly admire. You Americans should be ashamed that you don't do quality TV like this any more.
Jane Alexander very enthusiastically joined the cast of the more recent "Warm Springs" as Sara Roosevelt, completing the circle one might say. She noted it was great to explore some other elements "Eleanor and Franklin" hadn't time to do. It should be noted that Sara was not all heartless and controlling...She was an affectionate grandmother and did show Eleanor great sympathy in several crises.

Jane Alexander looks like Eleanor, and wears a good copy of the actual wedding gown. Sara Delano was a controlling bitch, and Teddy Roosevelt was uncle to both bride and groom.
I've been to the house in Hyde Park and seen the actual photograph of Eleanor in her wedding gown. For a plain girl, she was a statuesque beauty. This film cast her well, and copied the wedding gown exactly.
Such a wonderful depiction of the marriage of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt. Stunning, how much the actors portraying the couple resembled F.D.R. and Eleanor in the early years. I remember watching the mini-series, and being wholly captivated by the acting talents and exuberant scenery of the various locations. Splendid movie, in fact, it inspired me to learn more about F.D.R., Eleanor and their times. Thanks for posting. :0)
@Democrat64 ..My pleasure. I loved the accuracy of the recreation as much as you did! Like you I made something of a study of the Roosevelts after watching this as a teenager.
@sweetab24 , this was not from the BBC. It was made for U.S. network TV, airing on ABC. Back in those days, the U.S. networks were actually capable of producing quality programming.
@cookieshopgirl I think it was a little more complicated than that. Sara Delano was used to getting her own way. Eleanor, at this point of her life, was still very much an undefined character. Interesting to note that until the day she died (only a few years before her son), Sara controlled FDR's money. That can't be easy for any wife to live with.
@cranky1chick -- Very well said, in fact, the apparent over-bearing demeanor of the Mother-In-law, I think, only added to their (Franklin, Eleanor) undisclosed tension within the union itself. Surely, this would be true in any given marriage where there exist a related figure choosing to cling, obsessively, to a daughter or a son after their matrimonial vows. At some point, the relation with the parent(s) must become secondary...for the sake of the marriage.
@cookieshopgirl What's worse is that when FDR and Eleanor got married, Sara Roosevelt built a house that connected to theirs, so poor Eleanor had to see that bitch of a mother-in-law almost every day.

The finest thing television has ever done. A distinguished triumph for all concerned.

No offense, but the actress playing Eleanor seems like she's a little too old for the part.

This still stands in my opinion as the finest TV movie ever made.

This miniseries is available from Netflix. I highly recommend it.
Franklin's mother didn't want him to marry Eleanor.
