  • did he just skip 5th gear?

  • @93hopeless he skipped 1st which would also be referred to as low

  • @nickelndimemobsta i saw that, but watch him after he flips the hi/lo switch he goes right into sixth

  • Also, I've seen plenty of students who forgot to flip the h/l an couldn't get it into gear, then remember to flip it while in neutral and it goes into gear. It is always smart to have your selector in the proper range while it's in gear before shifting to the next high or low range, but you DON'T have to. If you're going from 5 to 6 and take it out of 5 with your lever down and remember it while you're in neutral, you can just flip it up and slap it in 6 gear if your quick enough. Don't know

  • @tigerfalcon. You're wrong, you can switch h/l while in neutral and it will switch the transmission. Say you're up shifting from 5 to 6, the reason you want to flip the lever up while it is in 5 is to preselect the high range so you don't have to worry about the selector while going to 6. If you get into a parked tractor and find the lever up, you just flip the lever down while it's in neutral and put it in the lower gear and take off. You don't put it in a gear then flip the lever.

  • @davepaula123 going to automatic? Most company's that I know that were all automatic have been going back to the manual trans from what I hear anyway...

  • Anyone else with headphones get innocently ear raped at the start.. DX

  • driving a split 5/4 transmission was a great way to learn how to drive a truck. If your arm didn't hurt after 8 hours of city driving you were not shifting properly.Great video of a 10 speed. One of the best low cost trans out there.

  • I drive rockwell 10 speed shifts pretty smooth

  • I`ll se that you guy`s haven`t been in a new SCANIA or VOLVO.they took away the clutch years ago and ar now using CAG gearing(electronic gearing)much smoother and give great miles pr.gallon.

So look east to scandinavia next time you want a new rig boys.

  • in the process of obtaining my CDL and if you dont Double clutch they will fail you in my state.... so trying to get that down First lol

  • @Jinkzed It's the same way here in TN. 2nd day driving on the road in school being firced to double clutch to get my cdl's. Hell most of the time it drops in gear before I get a chance to clutch it the second time lol

  • i liked this by mistake...

    o.O

  • What does floating mean?? please respond...

  • @lonewulf2009 floating is where you bring the engine RPM up to the speed where you shift the transmission, pushing the stick up (or down) toward neutral..when you lift your foot off the gas, the stick will go into neutral..Then, as the RPM drops, the stick will "float" into the next gear with a crisp pull or push in the direction you're wanting the stick to go...It takes some practice to get it right, preferably hauling light loads on a relatively flat stretch of highway

  • @nowhereman841 thanks for the response. it sounds difficult:(

  • @lonewulf2009 It's not as difficult as it looks from my initial reply..basically, you do all the same things as a shift using the clutch pedal, except you don't use it when "floating."

  • @lonewulf2009 it's actually easier than the normal clutchless shifting, once you get used to it. I actually managed to float gears long before I was able to do the normal clutchless shifting.

  • @101southsideboy oh ok. When I was younger, my dad did it differently.

  • No you do not have to put it in "n" first and then flip the switch. the way he shifted from 5th to 6th gear by flipping the lever before taking it out of 5th gear was the way I taught to do it . It makes for a more smother shift Same thing applies when you are going from the high gears down to the low gears.

  • I thought you had to put it in to neutral to do a high low switch

  • @titantron909 No you do not have to put it in "N" before flipping the switch . The way the guy did it was the same way I was taught. It makes for a smother shift. The same thing applies when you are going from a high gear down to a low gear

  • @titantron909 you always flip the switch while it's still in the gear you're going from. Then, when you go out of gear, the transmission goes into the new range. if you flip the switch while out of gear, it will still be in the same range.

  • when you are taking your CDL road test in a 10 speed or what ever! will the dmv instructor fail you for not using the clutch ? and do tanker trucks have to do docking most of the time!

  • @2darkmatter absolutely. OFFICIALLY, you are not allowed to shift without using the clutch. Even if most of us know it's more efficient to do so.

  • The best tractor as ever seen for instruct my employes is a 94 Mack with a 10 with a E7350, I could do dragway with that lol (shifting not speed lol)

  • no clutch

  • East bound and down bro !!!!

    The Dude

  • its a super 10.. i can see...

  • why would u have a 10 speed of 90k gross

  • he is shifting the way a rookie is taught. the push/pull and wait method is wrong and bad for the bearings. the proper way is to pull the stick out or push the stick in to gear at the exact moment there is no torque on the transmission. there will be no drag on the stick. you can clearly see the drag every time he pulls the stick out of gear.

  • people people he was power shififting he only was use his rpns

  • sweet im getting my CDL A real soon! trucking is awesome!!! nice floating!

  • yup.. that's what I started driving. was a 10 speed Freight Liner

  • thats how my five speed truck shifts without using the clutch...just push the sifter and wait for it to fall in to gear...

  • The answer is yes you pre-select high range before you shift

  • Do you flip the splitter while in gear?

  • Comment removed

  • @4inches4u You flip it up when in 5th gear before you let off to shift!

  • I love to hear the turbo whine!

  • frenos kodiad

  • Comment removed

  • @maggotsretards are you preselecting highrange as it should be done.

Or are you selecting the highrange when you shift? it will get stuck on middle of ranger and it´ll broke the tranny or at least chip a gear and you can believe what steel chips do in tranny.

Preselect the highrange and douple cluch it, press clutch when you releace gear and lift it and press again when you select fifth gear, doing that will even the gear spinning speed difference.

And best way to learn is by doing.

  • @maggotsretards yeah you are a retard lol

  • @maggotsretards

    8, 9, 10, 13, 15 or 18 dpeed?

  • @drumPRO Meritor 10 speed

  • Is that tractor a Sterling?

  • Wow, pretty sweet. I learned to drive a truck by watching my dad. I'm 15 and I can drive one with no problem. Great job man. Keep on trucking.

  • Someone that can actually shift. Good job.

  • Just keep your hand on the rod, and in no time you will have carpell tunnel like me.

  • Is he running wide open throttle? Or is the load so heavy it sounds like hes going soft?

  • the gear change is pretty big so I THINK he is empty!

  • The description says 90k. I didn't ask if he was empty. I asked if he was running WOT.

  • woops, misunderstood ya. sorry chief

  • Its loaded, hauling corn out of the field, 90K estimate, was just going to storage on the farm so I never scaled it.

No foot never touched the floor, just walking it out easy.

  • sterling truck. nice ,simple, easy.

  • I think slide shifting them is actually easier.. The clutch just makes things messier.

  • I have a Semi with a Super 10 and it's great. Easy to use. But I might prefer the straight 10. But the Eaton 13 is the best OTR tranny ever.

  • love the sound of trucks shifting gears

  • super 10 is the tranny for me but i dont mind a straight 10 either

  • gotta love floating gears

  • The oldschool ones had that plug doohickey and a steel box underneath with the valve/control wires. Now it's in a lever on a plastic box with wires inside the gearshift.

    Nice vid.

  • That was only 8 gears!

  • i noticed that 2 cause i was countin

  • there is a low gear that's over left and back you can use that in HI or LO and how ever it's called the "funny gear" in HI.

  • Nice floating!!!

  • Not the Splitter Switch The Range Change

  • i like me an 18, cuz you can split the gears

  • That little switch on the gear lever he ficked up is called "the splitter switch" so that goes for 10 and 18 gears.

  • 8 has a splitter too

  • im only 13 but i love trucks man wen i get mine i want a 10 speed not the 18 shit probly 13 but i really want 10 cause i been ridin wit my grand[pa a lot and like the third time i rode wit him i new were every gear was at n i wish u can use ur jake brake every where

  • ya me personaly i say utilize have a jake brake you can use when ever u want and doin that saves brakes

  • im just kinda startin to drive but i was wonderin if you could use the jake brake to slow down completely for like a turn or somethin, so that you never have to even use the brake pedal unless your stopping completely

  • Brake peddle is there for a reason. if you need it use it. dont rely fully on yhe jake. Jake is a goodsend for saving brakes tho.

  • Jakes only work in higher rpm so when you are in say 9th it will not do anything below about 40. Got to learn to downshift then Jakes can work. Lots of towns won't let you use them although some of the newer truck have up to 3 stages and with mufflers you can't hear them. You;ll get the hang of it.

  • Yes you can.

  • 18 Spd EatonFuller is the Transmissions for me.

  • Too many gears. spend most the day skipping gears. I have cummins 620 so no need to use all 18. mostly go 3 5 7 9 11 13 15 17 18. Split some times on hills but very rearly

  • when you have that much power you dont need to use all lol thats a fucking motor wicked they are..

  • yeah i didnt know what the difference was with the regular 10 and the super 10

  • regular ten speed you go thru 5 gears then flip the switch and go back thru the same 5 gears but your in a higher range you move the stick ten times super ten you split every gear so like each stick position has 2 gears, a high and a low you only move the stick 5 times

  • These are my favorite to drive. I like the old 9 speeds, but I love the 10 speed. Depending on your load you can start out at 2nd or 3rd if you are really light, or empty. Have your splitter in the down position once you get to your 5th gear, you flip your splitter up into high range then shift the same 5 gears you just shifted until you hit 10th gear.

  • looks like you shifted that like a 13 or 18 speed, the truck i drive has a 10 speed but you put it in 1,clutch and split up to second then split down, clutch put in 3rd and split up so whats the difference

  • That sounds like a super 10. I learned to drive a big truck on one. This is a standard 10, run your 5, then range up and do them again. I was coming to a country road stop sign so I kinda rolled through and just slid it into 2nd to start. This was a truck I was driving for a farmer.

  • @mmpowell11 slid it into second?? really? all that grinding is normal for "sliding" into gear?

  • @devonanderson57 Thats A super 10. Regular 10 is easier.

  • @devonanderson57 This vid is of a standard 10 spd, sounds like ur shifting a super 10 speed same as what i used to have.

  • @devonanderson57 you're driving a super10 rather than a straight 10. I prefer the super 10, but it's dang near impossible to find them anymore.

  • i love turbo sound mix engine sound very very good video 5

  • i love how people think it is has 10gears no it has 5 with a high range wich gives you the 10 gears. like a 12 speed it has 6 main with a high range = 12

  • No, it actually does have Straight 10. The spliter is a range splitter not a gear slitter. For example a 15 gearbox has a low and high range splitter, but the high range gears are split into 2, so in-fact the 15 gearbox only has 10 straight gears, 5 which are splitted. The gear box on this video has no gear splitter, hence the straight 10...

  • You obviously have never driven a big rig and know nothing about transmissions. This is a true 10 speed, a 13 speed has "low" than 1 through 4, and then 5 through 8, the last 4 are splittable making it a 13 speed. Hence, a 13 speed has two switches instead just one like this 10 speed. The toggle style switch is always the range selector.

  • Does the new 18 speed Eaton not require clutching once you need to split the gears???

  • A professional driver only uses the clutch when starting and stopping. All gears after 1st can be "floated" which means they can be shifted solely by using the throttle to find the correct RPM to match the speed and gear being selected. The only difference between a 13 and an 18 is that both the high and low ranges on an 18 are splittable. When splitting gears while up-shifting, all you have to do is let off on the throttle after you've flipped the thumb switch. Opposite for down-shifting.

  • that an aeromax?

  • is that a cat twin turbo?

  • Nice shifting!

  • You did not let all the way off the accelerator between shifts did you?

  • Very nice!

But how do u shitf without clutching? I really dunno...

  • you get your RPM's up high and shift. you can shift a 5 speed car or truck without clutching also.

  • Thanks!

I´ve heard about it once in NASCAR... but didnt know that could be done in" normal" vehicles.... thx

  • you don't need to go high on rpms to shift without clutch.just go easy with it first at 900 rpm then 1000 then 1200...you go up to 1500 or 1800 for the last ones.just need a good timing and knows your rpms gap between each gears.you get better fuel milleage taht way.

  • once you start to shift like this, you dont use a clutch much after you learn how to do it

  • You only have to use the clutch in first gear and the rest u dont have to clutch, well thats how it is with Sterlings.

  • Comment removed

  • Turbo sounds good. Nice shiftin.

  • cheater lol, u didnt start in 1st :)

  • were you floating or clutching? I couldn't see the other leg.

  • I learned without a cluch, never have used it.

  • thats cool

  • @mmpowell11 lol i had a guy on hear tell me that you must use a clutch with a RR because it was synched.hahahha

  • @robby844 depends on the syncros used. in a road ranger its probably fine but i dont know for sure. In a car or pickup or most syncronized trannys its not good to do cause youll destroy the syncros if not done 100% rite. even if it dont grind itll kill the ssyncros cause there making up for your misteak. Now an unsyncronized tranny such as an eaton fuller as long as it dont grind its ok to shift without the clutch. The same goes for a dog box

  • @everysubjectman i was taught to drive everything without a clutch so it really doesnt matter to me

  • @robby844 Well if you screw up your syncro trannys its up to you. I was taught to shift with the clutch. I dont know who would teach someone to shift everything without the clutch. A big truck with an eaton fuller or roadranger or such is one thing but a car and pickup and other viehcles with syncro trannys is another

  • @everysubjectman i guess its all in how you were taught.only time i rarely use a clutch is to take off. and thats only from a dead stop. everything i drive just has to be rolling to slip it in gear. from my jeep to my motorcycles

  • @robby844 yeah if your going to shift without the clutch you should at least use the clutch to start and stop. I saw a guy the other day in a mack trying to start from a standstill at a traffic light without the clutch. The cab was shaking and it was grinding terrible. I yelled at him to push the clutch in but he didnt hear me. Thats one thing not to do. I would use the clutch to shift on anything syncromess but thats just me

  • @everysubjectman yeah you cant take off from a dead stop without the clutch. and macks are almost impossible to shit without one

  • @robby844 o i know you can but on an unsyncronized your just gona grind the hell out of the tranny unless you give it the right amout of gas. on a syncromess it grinds less and goes in better cause the syncro matches the speed. Herd of it happen on a collar shift farm tractor tranny by acident. Guy pulled it in gear acidently as he was getting off and it ran over him. Its possible on all types of manuals but terrable on the tranny. also most people foat a mack tranny

  • @everysubjectman i hate the mack trans. it backwards in every way.

  • @robby844 I know. I looked at a mack truck one time with a mack tranny. I didn't like it. acually ive seen several of them

  • @everysubjectman i drove a super 10 for a company i worked for. drove it 2 days and walked away. so they put me in a pete with a 15 speed and a 600 CAT

  • @robby844 I havent had much experience with eaton fullers or roadrangers. i drove an eaton fuller 8 speed in a kenworth strait-truck. i liked it. I don't have my cdl's i only drive for farm use. I have an ih loadstar 1700 and an ih S1900. Both have 5 speeds with two speed rears. Love them. Thats what i learned on. 5 + 2 is my favorite tranny. There not the floating kind of tranny tho since there syncronized but u could. I wouldnt tho

  • @everysubjectman the mechanics truck i drive has a 10 and 2.hits about 80 with a 4000 pound loader bucket in the back

  • @robby844 10 and 2? never heard of that transmission

  • @everysubjectman sorry 10 speed with a two speed rear end. it's a pete CAT mechanics truck with a 10000 pound auto crane welder and aircompressor

  • @robby844 o ok. nice

  • @everysubjectman yeah its a nice truck.

  • @robby844 Much better combo I'd say. Super 10s suck. Especially sense they would never match a high powered motor with one.

  • @nwow2866 HAHAHAHA yeah so true
