According to my mpg reader built into my GPS I programmed it for my parents 91 chevrolet suburban with a 454 auto which gets on the highway 12-14mpg. Just the way I drove it I got +1 mpg making it 15mpg which is damn good for a auto big block.
When it comes to shifting and easy starts to save gas mileage, one thing you can do is get a vacuum gauge to install on your car. They're not expensive, and many are color coded to tell you when you are driving at peak efficiency, some will even have shift lights to tell you when to shift.
Lol, grow up dude and don't call people those kinds of things because it's disrespectful. Did your parents take care of you when you were a child? Plus it's true, people in Europe have to pay more for gas. Plus, oil is going to one day run out and so we'd be practically screwed from depending on it. We really do need to save energy. I'm already doing that by modifying my Dodge Viper and Mustang Shelby with a water hook up which saves 3 + 4 MPG.
By the way. Great tips on saving gas by powerplusgasoline: 1.Avoid high speed. 55-60 is best. 2.Discard unneeded items in the trunk. 3.Avoid "jackrabbit", easy on the brakes and gas pedal. 4.Use your air conditioning only when needed. 5.Use overdrive. 6.Keep tires properly inflated, balanced, and aligned. 7.Turn off the engine when u need to wait. 8.Get tune-up and maintenance checks. 9.Avoid highway driving with windows open. 10.Use your car only when needed. Don't be afraid to walk.
Here in Mexico we pay about 2.6USD per gallon of gas, but that would be the regular unleaded gasoline that isn't good for high profile cars. What I did was add a fuel-saving device that has provided me with 20% better mileage so far while making the gas burn more efficiently. This is no commercial so all I will say is that the same device in the US has a site called "powerplusgasoline". Get informed and save before discarding gas saving technologies. Kudos to all the people who care. I CARE.
(continue) Even jumping the gears is a good tip too, since you don't need any extra power in these conditions. Do the 1st one to make your car start moving without any difficulty. Then you can shift to the 3rd gear already and use the torque in your favor.
The most important thing to save fuel is to change gears when you really need to. Specially in long avenues, streets or roads, using your car engine's torque properly can make you save up to 30% when you combine all these tips. For example: you don't need to force your car's engine to 3000 rpm when you're driving in a plane/flat road. In this condition, changing your gear between 1000 and 2000 rpm is the best choice. I disagree about traveling at a high rate of speed, as long as you can safely maintain that speed and not accelerate or decelerate constantly, then you'll likely have better fuel economy. These are experts????
Almost all cars reach their best gas mileage between 55 to 60 MPH. The higher the speed, the higher the RPMs to maintain it, also, the more drag against the vehicle. driving at high speeds on the highway DOES lower your fuel economy, albeit a constant 75 MPH on the freeway is ALWAYS better than stop and go in town.
how about turning the engine off down long hills. use gravity!
