I never understood serenity, in a visual sense, until I encountered his 1955 William Blake death mask. Previously, I was ignorant of the man and his body of work but in the instant I laid eyes on this piece of work I was transformed into life long fan.
I was startled when I first saw a Bacon painting in person. The subject was so grotesque and yet painted so luxuriously that my jaw dropped. I must have spent an hour just looking at it. I know it sounds wrong to characterize a deformed face as captivatingly beautiful, but it was.
