harvested here vegetable wise is crops used for animal feed because mechanical damage is not a concern. Other crops are mechanically harvested but when it comes to celery, broccoli, lettuce, and cauliflower it is hand cut. Strawberries are hand picked there is a reason it is done this way.

So, we should be using advanced methods to grow and pick our food, like the mechanization of the midwest corn and soybean crops that are putting mexican farmers out of work. we need to do the same thing for other staples like fruit and vegetables which are currently being picked by hand.
@vancouverbluz We utilize a lot of technology in cutting and packaging lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower and celery, including the use of in house custom built harvesting machines with spray systems and autobaggers. It is hand cut and trimmed for a reason we tried fully mechanized as did other companies but the mechanical damage to the plants was too much and rendered the produce useless.
@vancouverbluz But trust me a lot of technology goes into these plants. Just the track systems alone are about 80,000 dollars and we have more than 60 harvesters some of them built totally out of Stainless Steel including the frame.

That problem will be solved within 2 years given the video processing algorithms that have been developed within the last couple of years. The truth is slave labor in developed countries in becoming an increasingly useless commodity, that is why countries like china are increasing the value of their resources.

Our produce is packaged in the field as soon as it is picked and then put in a reefer unit depending on the plant. With mechanized harvesting you would have to then build a packaging and sorting plant. We pride on being packaged on site and shipped out as fresh as possible.

@Zolatoner mechanized harvesting of fruits and vegetables is the future and is inevitable. Not only for the us, but for Japan and europe. You really don't know what is happening now in robotics. They have robotic mechanisms that are becoming as proficient as humans at picking fruits from trees. They are more efficient as well. These machines can be rented just like harvesters in the great plains. When agribusiness companies take over these farms in California, mechanization will follow.

In fact we are the largest non publicly traded agriculture company in the country. None of the harvest machines we use can be rented or bought they are built and designed in house they are truly one off custom harvesters. Salinas Ca is a pioneer for the rest of the country in Ag technology.

In the not too distant future, labor will either become too expensive, or mechanized labor too cheap. What they are doing with genetic engineering will enable them to breed hardy varieties of fruits and vegetables to promote the mechanization process. Human population growth is in decline and will peak in about 35 years. After that humans will cease doing menial labor.

A machine is no match for a trained picker who has years of experience. It has been tried many times and like I said before then you have to have a packing house our produce is packaged within 30 seconds of being picked it is as fresh as you can get it. So, we should be using advanced methods to grow and pick our food, like the mechanization of the midwest corn and soybean crops that are putting mexican farmers out of work. we need to do the same thing for other staples like fruit and vegetables which are currently being picked by hand.

@vancouverbluz We utilize a lot of technology in cutting and packaging lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower and celery, including the use of in house custom built harvesting machines with spray systems and autobaggers. It is hand cut and trimmed for a reason we tried fully mechanized as did other companies but the mechanical damage to the plants was too much and rendered the produce useless.

@vancouverbluz But trust me a lot of technology goes into these plants. Just the track systems alone are about 80,000 dollars and we have more than 60 harvesters some of them built totally out of Stainless Steel including the frame.

@Zolatoner You are correct, but it is a technological problem, that will be solved eventually. The problem is with the systems not being able to discern the ripeness of the fruit. That problem will be solved within 2 years given the video processing algorithms that have been developed within the last couple of years. The truth is slave labor in developed countries in becoming an increasingly useless commodity, that is why countries like china are increasing the value of their resources.

@vancouverbluz So you are saying the drug cartels want to come here and kill there customers? Back on the ag side there is another problem to fully mechanized harvesting. Our produce is packaged in the field as soon as it is picked and then put in a reefer unit depending on the plant. With mechanized harvesting you would have to then build a packaging and sorting plant. We pride on being packaged on site and shipped out as fresh as possible.

@Zolatoner mechanized harvesting of fruits and vegetables is the future and is inevitable. Not only for the us, but for Japan and europe. You really don't know what is happening now in robotics. They have robotic mechanisms that are becoming as proficient as humans at picking fruits from trees. They are more efficient as well. These machines can be rented just like harvesters in the great plains. When agribusiness companies take over these farms in California, mechanization will follow.

@vancouverbluz Nobody is going to take over these farms in Cali. Our company is a multi million dollar company and we have been around for a long time and are not going anywhere. In fact we are the largest non publicly traded agriculture company in the country. None of the harvest machines we use can be rented or bought they are built and designed in house they are truly one off custom harvesters. Salinas Ca is a pioneer for the rest of the country in Ag technology.

In the not too distant future, labor will either become too expensive, or mechanized labor too cheap. What they are doing with genetic engineering will enable them to breed hardy varieties of fruits and vegetables to promote the mechanization process. Human population growth is in decline and will peak in about 35 years. After that humans will cease doing menial labor.

@vancouverbluz At the end of the day it agriculture will always need experienced people to plow the fields, sow the seeds, water the crops, spray the crops, rehabilitate the soil, and pick and package the produce. A machine is no match for a trained picker who has years of experience. It has been tried many times and like I said before then you have to have a packing house our produce is packaged within 30 seconds of being picked it is as fresh as you can get it. The only crops mechanically

Companies like Monsanto are working on these solutions as we speak. It is inevitable that hard labor is taken out of the supply chain of all agriculture. The only problem is that the employers don't want to pay the legal wages for the licensed workforce, they would rather pay the illegals to do it for less.

@somement Yes there is and we use those employees when we go to Arizona to grow winter lettuce for 4 months but the rest of the time they can't drive 11 hours to Salinas California everyday we only work by the border for a few months. And secondly this company pays good pickers can make like 600 a week if your on a productive machine which is way more than the government requires. The reason they work there is not low pay it's because for some reason Americans don't want to.
