Does something similar still happen nowadays in military bases? I mean, just because of some men's faults, everyone of a platton or a company's lose their weekend pass.
It's true every Easy Comapany soldier hated Sobel's guts and would've more then loved to frag him if he led them into combat. But after the war a lot of the men have said if Sobel hadn't been so hard on them in Basic they probably wouldn't have survived the amount of combat they were in during the war
My great uncle was part of the 101st Airborne, and he was "inspecting" (looting) a french house, and he loaded the silverware in his pack and set off from the house. just then as he was walking with a patrol down the road, a German sniper aimed and shot him in the back. Luckily, the silverware stopped the bullet, and saved his life. He didn't even have time to pick up a spoon after the bullet, and the silver ware exploded out of his pack, ripping it to shreds, but it saved his life. True Story.
@neanderpaul14 He would probable say, "what you call this fraging!? I saw rust on the pin! Weekend pass revoked private now run Currhae 5 times for you incompitance to properyly frag me! How do you expect to frag Germans if you can't frag me! Next weekend pass revoked!"
personally I reckon Sobel is too complicated to say hes either Great or terrible, it was too long ago to get accurate record of exactly what he was like, you can ask officers/privates etc but never know background story, I reckon he was misunderstood did his job well but if i was under his command i'd probably hate him too..
Sobel had too be a sob, war isn't fun & games. Have to get used to the unexpected & learn how to cope with bullshit fast asap is better. If 1 couldn't cope with bullshit in training , would you want that guy beside you in the feild? I wonder if Sobel ever did see combat, fire fight. Having that experience would be a very good aset. Should be a prerequisite for training men even a very close exp to combat
@Kilooscarromeo As far as I know he never did see action. He was transferred to training then logistics. He was recalled to service in Korea but I don't know if he saw action there.
If you've read the book, you'll see that all the men, although they hated Sobel, almost unanimously they recognised that all the PT he put them through gave them an advantage over both their peers and the Germans.
Sobel could've made a better career as the CO of training platoons. He just wasnt fit for combat at all. its really sad how he lost easy company, and how he hated his life after that.
Captain Sobel Wasnt a great CO, he was tested by Major. Horton and he walked into the ambush instead of waiting, and he Gave people Revoke/cancels too often, he gave Luitinant Nixon (Captain at end) A revoke for saying that A can of peaches was a can of peaches, other than it was Army Property, And he gives Luitinant Winters (Major at end) Mess duty when he was promoted to first luitinant, But when he was a captain, captain sobel returned as the SP4, Supply officer for easy
Funny part about that is, while SP4, he made an order that everyone had to turn in their D-Day Maps. Winters, who had sewn his into his uniform, wrote into Sobel, mimicking Anthony McAughlin saying, "Nuts. Signed Major Richard Winters."
However, Major Winters also states in his book that it was the toughness of Sobel that made Easy Company the best Company in the 506th. Winters admits Sobel was a cruel, hated man, but he also states that Sobel was good at readying Easy for the war. Winters himself had a grudge with Sobel, and actually went on Court Marshall for not cleaning the Latrine at a specified time. (which Sobel changed without telling winters) During this time, Major Strayer, (XO) transfered Sobel from Easy.
Actually, Lieutenant Colonel Strayer. During the war, he was XO to Colonel Sink, and he held the rank of Major. After Operation Market Garden, Winters was promoted to Captain, and Strayer was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. By the end of the war, Winters was a Major, Sink was a Brigadier General, and Strayer was CO (Colonel) rank of the 506th PIR.
Winter said in the book band of brothers that Sobel was the man woho created and made the 101st the best the army ever had. Without winter they never could have fight like tehy did
