This looks kind of yummy this orange stuff but I don't know if I want to really go the raw way, all the way, maybe just some things, I know that's sorta half baked, but I'm not ready to give up things like bread, pasta, just yet...
My big hangup is greens. I know It's not just me. It doesn't taste good. I like Kale because it doesn't have much of it's own taste. I keep thinking I'll get used to the flavor of greens but in the meantime...ew. People can fail at going raw because they don't eat enough greens. I don't want to fail. But if greens are so important, wouldn't the taste be naturally attractive to more people?
The taste becomes naturally attractive as the sense of taste naturalizes - this may take some time to occur. Nevertheless we each need varying amounts and it may be less than we think but more than we would normally consume in the SAD(iet). Blending greens with fruits makes them much more palatable for the beginner and with a little practice and experimentation you can turn this into an art. Keep blends simple however and cycle through your greens to avoid overloading on various alkaloids.
Juice greens with other veggies, and they mix in and become part of the delicious whole. Mix in apples, cucumbers, celery, bell peppers and carrots, and you get what you need within a delicious juice.
i'm transitioning, so i do eat 1 cooked meal a day. i find it much easier to digest if i eat it at lunch, when the digestive enzymes (according to indian ayurvedic medicine) is higher, than trying to cope with it at dinner time. i eat raw at breakfast and dinner, and snacks. your smoothie looks delish!
Very cool. I dig that Gabriel Cousins goes into ayurveda in his Rainbow Green Live Food book. It certainly makes a difference if you know this stuff. Good on you. I should be doing the same :)
I'm not a huge fan of kale either...so I add a couple leaves to my other greens in my green smoothie. Example: 1 1/2 handfuls of mixed greens or herb mix, couple large kale leaves, water, banana, and blueberries (this will cover up the green taste and make the smoothie blue)
I laughed at 'I wouldn't make a kale salad'. Last week, I had the loveliest kale salad that I recreated from a salad I had purchased pre-made. Portabella mushrooms - cut into bite size pieces, onion (my favorite right now is sweet onion so that is what I used) and thinly sliced bell peppers (I used orange but any color would be nice). Marinate all overnight in some balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Add bite sized kale and let that marinate until you are ready to eat. My mouth is watering now.
I love green smoothies with either spinach or kale, I find though that you have to adjust the amount of greens to your personal taste. For Kale, I'll just use three leaves or spinach a good handful and a half.
I had an awesome smoothie this morning too. Fresh coconut water (from a young coconut, not the one with all that brown fury/hairy stuff on it), 1 large banana, a handful of raspberries, 2 tbs cacao, 2 tbs maca, 1 tbs bee pollen & we aslo chucked some of the coconut meat (flesh?) in. WOW WOW WOW! Smoothies with coconut water are my absolute favourite at the moment. If you haven't tried coconut water as a base, please please please do. xx
Yep, water needed - just a bit tho. Far out, I'm actually salivating from reading your msg, haha. I used to live in Singapore and I went totally nuts on coconuts but reading that makes me want to start using them again :)
Wow. As i was listening to you saying that you would never eat kale I was simultaneously thinking I REALLY wanted a kale salad for dinner!!! Have you ever massaged a whole head of kale (remove the center stem) with an avocado to 1/2 its volume. add cumin, salt, bit of agave, juice of whole lemon, pumpkin seeds, dried cranberries, cukes, tomatoes + whatever. THE BEST DINNER EVEr!
gotta run to the store for some local kale! xoxoxo

Sprouts are a beautiful way to get greens. My kitchen looks like a micro garden. :-)

Ok cool. I'll try the overnight thing. I might enjoy it with the acids from the vinegar having tenderized it. Cheers
