This guy proves that ceratopsians didn't use their horns to defend themselves. Pachyrhinosaurus doesn't have a horn, and Einiosaurus's horn was curved and useless.
Whether the horns had some other purpose first and foremost (display etc), if attacked then, accidentally or purposefully, one-metre horns (for the larger Ceratopsines) are going to come into play defensively. True, Pachyrinosaurines seem to lack that option, but seven metres of powerful, instinctive-driven animal is quite formidable anyway ...
perhaps bludgeoning? Like the typical ceratop horn isn't nearly as strong as modern horns made of hair like material, if a triceratops stabbed an attacker, and the attack falls over, the horn would either, come out, break off, or drag the whole triceratops over too. Pachyrinosaurus would be able to simply ram and not worry? Just my thoughts. Occurred to me just now :P
The "point" would be to pull out clean, avoiding any damage to the owner. But, it's true that the boss on Pachyrhinosaurus could amount to a battering ram in the right circumstances ...
