I have been following the Cards since 1954 when I was 9 years old. I am 66 now. I saw Musial many times and he never disappointed. He was all they said he was. My dad often went to Stan and Biggies (a restaurant) after games and Stan would always show up and table hop. He eventually knew my name. Once before game I was with friends and said hi to him on the field. He said hi and addressed me by name. I never forgot it. You could have knocked my friends over with a feather.
Worked at a hardware store in St.L before going to medical school, just a quiet college student. Stan came in disguised often. He ordered a bunch of bird seed. I would carry it to his car after putting his order together. I never bothered him. He never said a word, he would pop his hatch, hop behind the wheel, not so much as a 'thanks kid'. It's great when the camera is on, but a personal touch with one that is insignificant is my measure of a person. Stan was just a man, not the man.
I didn't realize how physically big a man he was. He's just before my time, but I heard nothing but comparisons as a kid regarding first basemen. He was clearly one of the greats. Seems like a terrific guy as well.
Never got tossed out of a game. Can you imagine that for anyone else? I was in grad school at the U. of Co. and all that year was pulling for the Cards to win the pennant, and then, as I recall the Dodgers swept the last series of the year and that was that. I was so sad that Stan couldn't have gotten in one more series.
magos he got into enough and whats with donora pennsylvania sumthin in the water hooorah musial and the griffeys no town that size should produce that many players of that caliber dont get me wrong the griffeys dont hold a candle but they were all 3 great ballplayers somethings goin on there
@magos369 That's right...1963..we won like 20 of 21 games in Sept and had a great shot at the pennant. My 1st year as a Card fan. And I still remember Stan's last AB. A dbl. in the 9th.
Did you know? That Stan's phone number was in the ph. book until the 60's? That tells us something about what kind of man he was.
He will be missed. And to the guy who said AP is passing him, he won't in hits, dbls, triples, stolen bases runs scored or class.
Stan will always be the man. Its so sad that not many fans today know who he is. You have to be over 60 to remember this man when he played. I mean he wasn't a power hitter but he could get the ball in play and getting EXACTLY 1,816 home and away he did his job. Selfless, Kind, and a true man, Stan Musial is one of the greatest first basemen of all time. I know Puljois is great but he's got a LONG WAY to go before he can even fill Stan's shoes.
@redmustang03 Pujols is already passing stan now what do u mean a long way to go LOL. Love Stan but Pujols will stand tall over Stan when its all done as far as numbers......
@SaintLouisRedbirds Your absolutely right. St. Louis will turn out for that sad day. Fathers will take their children to the city wide funeral to honor the man. New York and Los Angeles who are 10 times bigger will not understand what a nice person he really is and the baseball fans every year picked by ESPN as the nicest will mourn.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY STAN. 91 YEARS YOUNG TODAY. I WAS AT HIS LAST HOME
GAME, STILL HAVE THE PROGRAM AND PICTURE THAT WAS GIVEN OUT THAT
DAY. THANKS FOR SO MANY LONG LASTING GOOD MEMORIES FROM THOSE
DAYS.
