@OneFifthNative Trust me, I did this past semester of college. I thought we would be forever but she only wanted my brain and to use me. She broke my heart. Preach on Brother Bruce.
@bluesboy25000 Love is more powerful than any drug. Makes you loco, loco, loco, loco. I'm just waiting for the female robots to be invented. I thought they'd be here by now, along with the flying cars.
@bluesboy25000 I'm sorry to hear that, she's obviously a bitch. True and authentic devotion to love is very closely tied with the mysterious power of religious devotion, in my view. Both require - demand actually - pure continuous honest devotion to succeed in life. And each demands that personal ego-centered falseness continuously diminishes and that committed personal honesty and integrity towards the individual AND to the partner continues under the guidance of God's scolds, hints and nudges.
Reminds me of Roy Orbison..someone who strongly influenced the boss. Same operatic, larger than life quality. Same theme of longing, of encountering something that transforms the everyday world into....magic...for just a golden instant.
Worked there...met her...married her...kids...house...car...divorced...everything...i said it before somewhere...Bruce is God...i only told Him this things...
I thought this song was silly first time i heard it but theres a married girl im falling in love with at work, and today i screamed with bruce 'and catch a smile that blows this whole fuckin' place apart' driving home.
Your post made me think of something someone once said, "In this life you will be able to chose who you love... but you will not be able to chose who loves you." Falling in love with someone who is married can be a very painful love... and cause many others even greater pain. I hope you will make wise choices.
My plan is to work there for a while, get really close (shes not the type to break up her marriage) then when i leave to work somewhere else in a year or two il write her a note saying something like 'your the most beautiful girl iv ever met'.
Time is a healer my friend, and there feelings have passed. Alot of it was to do with Christmas, and starting a new job at Christmas next to a beautiful girl... What a wonderful time.
Now I understand she is just a friend. Although we did walk home the other day.
Don't understand critics of this song. I've been there with this song, nice feeling, and i'm sure rings true for so many out there. My own personal favorite from the album. In fact, I actually have a shine on a certain queen of my supermarket...
"I turn back for a moment, and catch a smile that blows this whole fuckin' place apart" Come on, its simple and sweet, but SO powerful at the same time. Can you imagine feeling that? Pretty close to "you ain't a beauty, but hey, you're alright, and thats alright with me".
This song is a masterpeace. Life in short in it. I don't get it why people don't understand this song. Maybe they are used to complicae things and miss true simple life. This song is about simple life, strong feelings of human love and sraigh to the heart. When you know the feeling you know how much meaning it has.
I've heard a lot of criticism of this song, people wondering how the man who once sang about warm summer nights, dusty pick up trucks, switchblade lovers and scared, lonely girls ended up here. What everyone seems to have missed is that this song is still tackling a classic Boss theme. For the past 35 years Springsteen has taught us to look for love, beauty and adventure in the ordinary and unremarkable areas of life. The emotions and ideas of the song transcend the location.
@wrightherewrightnow9 I think this is the perfect scenario for Springsteen. His songs were always tinged with a hint of cynicism that your dreams may not be fulfilled. These songs capture those people from Born to Run and Prove it All Night and Thunder Road all grown up and realizing their dreams are gone and they must resign to this mundane existence. Very existential. Nietzsche would approve.
Don't get me wrong - I love Bruce and this is a catchy tune, but Bruce... you've gone from trains and motorcycles down Highway 9 and girls named Mary to... supermarkets?? Who are you and what have you done with Bruce? Please say it ain't so, Bruce.
I get your point, but in the meantime, wouldn't it be really weird if Bruce was still writing about Highway 9 and girls named Mary, after 35 years? Becaue that's now who he is anymore! I have to say that I really respect Bruce for allowing his music to change, and not go around pretending to be 25 for the rest of his life.
i cant work out whether people are joking when they read into this song? the man is picking up a few groceries and is checking out a checkout girl...and writes a song about it...the checkout beeping at the end gets me every time. Went to see him last night in Dublin though and it was incredible
Why don't more people get this song? You guys are his fans, you should see that this isn't weirder than "you ain't a beauty, but hey, you're alright" from Thunder Road! It's about seeing beauty where no one else necessarily does!
Fuck, I guess I'm not down with the upper middle class snobs because the grocery store I shop at there are alot of people on food stamps. Hard to find love in aisle number two when your down and out. I guess Bruce can't relate to the guys waiting for their babes to meet them in the Darkness on the Edge of Town anymore.
There are about a dozen ways to interpret the song, including the possibility that anyone could be secretly admired by someone.

OK. I'll be creative. Why don't they do a video in a Patterson NJ supermarket where the poor live or in a working class town like Bogota where the working class live ( the people that BRUCE is supposed to represent). He's getting a little too wishy/washy for me in his old age. And a bit too hypocritcal.
you don't have to be middle class to shop in a supermarket FFS.
almost all of the people that shop or work are working class. this is still the darkess on the edge of town if you listen, its still about the struggle and hope for a better life, the characters only got older along with bruce and the rest of us

Its classic Bruce doing what he does best telling stories of every day life.
The lines " As i lift my groceries into my car i turn back for a moment and catch her smile that blows this whole fucking place apart" well those lines blow me fucking apart, If you have never felt a reaction to a smile like that you have never lived my friends.

To the ones whom put the blame on Bruce about this song. When U have a few money, bringing food home is such a hard job to get done. Bruce realized it and that's why he tributed a song to these silent and anonymous heroines. Good job Bruce.
It's kind of refreshing that a song is dedicated to a girl that works her butt off in a grocery store. With all the pretentious "CAREER WOMEN" out there who think they shit vanilla ice cream screw them. Give me that cutie in aisle five who would appreciate a slice and a coke after her shift.
Yes ge did, that is what Brilliant adaisguise is about, he was having an affair on his wife/girlfriend while she was having an affair on him at the same time.
Geez, some guy makes an allegation in a divorce suit, confiding in friends that, "he [Springsteen] will pay be a fortune just to go away]," - no evidence, none.
But it's in the tabloids [who have no proof and know it's false], and they'll print anything for people like you, who subsequently have no problem passing a phoney allegation along as a fact.

Have to agree with you TheGurry, ive seen 26 concerts in 9 countries but this song is shocking. Why the rest of the band didnt just say "Hey Bruce, we love you man but you are takin the piss with this" is beyond me....
before you start getting bitchy.....can i just tell you that this whole album is very reminisent of the "Nebraska" album the slow meaning full style. just think would you be so Shitty about the song if it was of the river?, Nebraska ro perhaps born to run....no you would accept it as Bruce which is what it is.....to be honest it must be hard for him to keep writing songs so meaning full after all he has over 400 songs! let it go and listern afterall he did it for us....
The song is sung with so much passion and blows me way.The end is awsome although some think this song is about a girl in a supermarket. It's about much more.
Well, I'm "Outlaw Pete, I have a "Good Eye" for "Life Itself" and this is "The Last Carnival", baby! "Surprise Surprise", this is "My Lucky Day", see "What Love Can Do" "Working on a Dream" "In This Life" and as "Tomorrow Never Knows" take a good look at our "Kingdom of Days", let me be your "Wrestler" and be my "Queen of the Supermarket"...
Episode inspired on Springsteen's "Working on a Dream", by me
I think everyone at some point in time in their lives have noticed an absolutely stunning beauty in the supermarket and wondered to themselves what it would be like to discover the secrets beneath her white apron. There's one at my local store that just blows the whole fuckin place apart!
I am from the UK, work in a supermarket, been a fan of Bruce for 25yrs. He sings about life, try working in one, for for nine hours. I do.
Way to go Bruce, tell like it is, as always. Best Rock Musician EVER, Long may he perform, seen Bruce live 7 times, wont get to see him in UK in June, tickets all gone, unless you want corporate, nuff said...
alright guys c'mon now....he's talking about a supermarket!! hahahhaa if you look at the lyrics closely he's kinda poking fun at the whole thing, but i think it's a pretty funny song to listen to, and bruce's other songs, like This Life!
It's great to remember the classics. Rosalita and the like, but the man has grown and never stopped. Let's raise a toast to new classics....at least for true fans. Count ourselves among the millions.
At 1:33 the flip of the eggplant completely captures the spirit of this song. Thank you for such an amazing video. Definitely money well spent on your video editing software.
And once again he sounds like he's 19 years old - love the vocals. Haven't even listened to any other song on the album cause I can't even get past this song. Thank you once again Bruce!
The critics have been very hard on this song and unfairly so. Maybe Bruce is just kind of winking at us with this song. Besides, we all can't be poets and those of us that aren't are entitled to our own dreams and aspirations, however small they might be. Bruce is giving voice to these things in this song. I also happen to think this song is beautifully produced, arranged, and sung.
great vocal by bruce on this one. he said on the DVD footage that he needed some adrenalin to sing it in this key (G major). Nils does some great high harmonys also.

You can interpret Brilliant Disguise that way, or any way, if that's what you chose to hear.
I think the meaning much more profound. How much, and which parts, of our whole selves do we reveal to our partners?
Certainly we do it selectively, especially early in a relationship. But as time passes it's harder and harder to be a better person than we are.
As the mask starts to crumple that's when the question, "is that me, baby, or just a brilliant disuise?" hits.
No third party necessary.

Would have been cool if they had him walk through the store while he sang.
thanksbruce09 2 years ago

There's one at my local store that just blows the whole fuckin place apart!
bta4444 2 years ago 2
I am from the UK, work in a supermarket, been a fan of Bruce for 25yrs. He sings about life, try working in one, for for nine hours. I do.
Way to go Bruce, tell like it is, as always. Best Rock Musician EVER, Long may he perform, seen Bruce live 7 times, wont get to see him in UK in June, tickets all gone, unless you want corporate, nuff said...

The song is a masterpiece, if you don't get you are too stupid to get!! Amazing
kwefanatix 3 years ago
alright guys c'mon now....he's talking about a supermarket!! hahahhaa if you look at the lyrics closely he's kinda poking fun at the whole thing, but i think it's a pretty funny song to listen to, and bruce's other songs, like This Life!
emilyxooxx 3 years ago
It's about him a man being in love with a woman at a supermarket and she has no idea who he is and he is just another face in the crowd to her.

The part between 2:06 and 2:40 sounds like something Roy Orbison used to do. They were big friends.

Definitely money well spent on your video editing software.
diarchangel 3 years ago
Awesome. Only Bruce would have the balls to write lyrics like these knowing they can so easily be mocked.
But it's a continuation of songs like I Wanna Marry You and Reason To Believe.
