I am sorry about your Grandmother and yes most families should step in and be a part of the assessment of their loved ones. Now then, it is at 3:03 and secondly, Claudia Allen DOES address the Bigger questions that need to be considered as part of the assessment at 3:58 and (if you watched the video to the end) you would be able to get more answers by visiting her only authorized website on leather lacing and it's formidable assistance to OTs from all walks of life.
To insinuate that Claudia Allen is "old school" neither substantiates her as wrong, nor does it define an alternative to another method that can come close to the countless thousands she has helped. Name calling does not prove her method incorrect nor her stand on cognition assessment. It's easy to criticize and easy to be misled by lack of information. Take another look. Perhaps buying the manual and studying it closer would reveal I am correct.
My grandma was in the hospital after a stroke, and during her rehab, they gave her this test To determine whether she can live alone?
Watch the footage at 2:58. She says, "Obviously, the test of lacing that lasts for a few minutes isn't an adequate way to examine the bigger questions like: ... Can the person live alone?"
Fortunately, my parents did not listen to their OT, and took her home to live with us. She is doing much better now. I'm not saying all OTs are bad, but this nursing home was.
@adwenger0066 Now, I am a psyhology graduate. I'm not saying the test is bad, but if you read the research on this test, the populations target middle aged adults. It is not valid to give this test to older patients (I have not seen any research that would contradict this).
Claudia Allen is very biased as she obviously was thinking mainly of elderly patients with dementia or other progressive illness. I am a mental health o.t. who is extremely offended by the notion that o.t's mainly work with patients who will not improve functionally and should just be given compensatory techniques....she simply should not have generalized to all practice settings in mental health...she is so old school and nonprogressive..
