I MISS BETTY BOOP. MY MOM USE TO GIVE ME A LOT OF HER COLLECTIONS IN MY BABY-CHILDHOOD DAYS, AND IT STILL LOOK NEW NOW I ALWAYS TOOK CARE OF IT, NOW WITH JESSICA RABBIT'S COLLECTION TOO, I ADMIT THAT I'M 19 BUT I STILL LOVE COLLECTING THEM BOTH.
R.I.P. Mae Questel! Your work will never be forgotten! Olive Oil and Betty Boop will forever be my favorite cartoons, but NOBODY will EVER be able to replace your brilliant voice!
@catielyn1289 The thing that made Mae Questel stand out was that she went beyond the literal Helen Kane imitation in "creating" the voice personality for BETTY BOOP.
I honestly can say I was too young to see this when it originally aired and the first time I actually saw betty boop was when she appeared in who framed roger rabbit. one thing right off the bat made me scratch my head and wonder, how did the people who made this get away with the scene of betty dancing with just the flower necklace over her chest?. this is the 80's I thought censors were starting to be hard asses by that time?
@azuz6778 Part of the problem was the use of color, which was too random, lacking in applying actual color schemes. The colors are mostly too garish and used for their own sake without regard to harmony. This is also an issue with the backgrounds, which are painted too "flat", although POOR CINDERELLA, was done this way, and still better. The original black and white cartoons used a sepia "wash" technique that gave them a softer look that produced a separation from the characters.
do you know the name of that one where she works a lot and is in love with a star and the owner of the club kidnaps her because the man managing the club doesn't have enough money to pay the rent?
@ParkerTaibi Thank you so, so much for posting this!!! I recorded it on video when I was in 4th grade (I'll be 27 years old next month) and the picture quality was so bad we had to throw out the tape. Thanks again for this, love to you!!! <3
@ParkerTaibi That one was bad, too. With all its awkwardness, HOLLYWOOD MYSTERY was actually animated better than ROMANCE. Neither was handled by people who knew the character or the nuances of the original animation.
This just isn't the same without Mae Questel for Bettys' voice... They tried to make this version way too child-friendly, when the original series (1930's) had much more adult humor...
From what i know is that Mae Questel couldnt do the voice anymore, and that is why she didnt voice Betty in the romance of Betty Boop. This movie was made a year after Betty appeared in Who framed Roger Rabbit. They didnt even do any auditions for the voice of Betty Boop for this movie, Melissah Fahn was working at a desk somewhere as reception, and the director said liked her voice and she was hired for the role of Betty Boop,
@BooppoopaDoop Mae Questel was ill by this time. Also her voice work in ROGER RABBIT did not have the quality that she originated. There are plenty of others who could have matched the nature of the voice. But it's not enough to be able to match the voice, there has to be the ability to act and sing. This performance is not great- a combination of the material and the "directing" which is frankly flat.
I have read many reviews on this movie, and most of them have terrible reviews on Melissa Fahn voicing Betty Boop. im quite sure nobody could match Mae Questel's voice, even the eariler voices. Mae's voice stood out out of all of them, Betty's new official voice is Cindy Robinson, but i doubt we will see Betty on the big screen, unless she is to appear in WFRR 2.
@BooppoopaDoop The closest match I've heard is Bernadette Peters. But she is a premium talent. There was a feature film planned in 1992, but it was scrapped when Joe Mancuso, Jr. left Paramount to fill the vacancy left by Alan Ladd, Jr. At MGM. Ladd had approved the BOOP feature. But after the failures of COOL WORLD and BEBE'S KIDS under Mancuso at Paramount, he canceled the project claiming that "animated features don't make money."

@cynthiastar21 Different in that it does not equal them. A nice attempt at something that the people involved did not quite understand.

they kind of ruined betty boop when they started adding color.
I like the old days better. Plus betty boop started as a poddle dog.
