Definitely one of the most beautiful and haunting songs I know. Amazing how such a ballad can show you the pain and heartache that people have felt in times long ago. This song is a true gem.
i axadentally fell apon this song on my x box 360 with my friend, it started playing and i was all like....this is going to be stupid....then i heard her three seconds later and broke out crying im a 16 yr old male teenager it just made me think of all the fuck ups iv made in my life but also all of my great friends and family and it made me feel good in a way i never have felt before.... is that normal?
I love this culture of Irish Gaelic Song and Folklore... the melodies are almost haunting, in a pleasant way. By the way, have you ever heard the shofar blasting? Wow! Stirs your soul...
@anDamhar It is a father writing a lewtter to his son John who has immigrated to America... the last verse is John's sister writing to him to tell him that their father has died.
@anDamhar a family writes to their cousin/sibling who immigrated to the USA ti find work to support himself and his parents who are aging. the first post-script has the mother passing on; the last tells of the father moving in with his daughter John's sister, and later dying as well happy and proud of his kin. The verses speak of the news of the family's doings and yearning to have him with them, and the last words are a plea for him to "come home" for a visit..which hasn't happened for a while.
Beautiful. I heard this ages ago, and have never found it anywhere because I didn't know the name of the song. Whoever said Irish music calls to you no matter what your heritage is spot on. I'm no Irishman, but I love Irish music. I've even covered two of my fave Irish songs-Kevin Barry and "Fields of Athenry," on my own channel.
love this song, bought the cd two months ago i think, i can't remember. anyway i love this cd, its so beautiful. this song is one of my favorites, i won't get tired of listening to this song. favorite songs: Loch Lomond, Ave Maria, She Moved Through The Fair (though Celtic Woman's version is my favorite), The Wind That Shakes The Barley, My Own Native Land and Broom o' The Cowdenknowes.
Thank you for uploading this! I heard this song several times on the cd but never listened to the words. I found myself driving on a long road trip yesterday alone in the car, popped in the cd and listened. I literally cried. I struck me quite deeply. Haunting, nostalgic, sad......remember one's family! I miss my mom.
Celtic music calls to you...no matter your heritage. I played this song for my students...and they loved it. A couple of them even cried. We were studying the reasons for the Irish emigration to Canada and the US. It sure does tug at the heart-strings.
I've listened to many versions...and this is the most meaningful and heartfelt that I have heard. Thanks for posting it.
i love this song, its so haunting. i almost bought the cd today. next time i'll get it for sure! this song gave me major goosebumps in the beginning. i love celtic music, its one of my favorite types of music. i listen to Celtic Women, i have 4 cds and 1 dvd. i wish i could go to Ireland, it would be so cool to hear the music there.
@1990animegirl1 yes it gives a new meaning after you have been there , i was there . we drove around the country , the back roads and got a real feeling of the land, life there . for me i have a very strong , strange calling from Ireland. from a past life ? i need to be there . even when i got back from my travels there . i was at work and a car pulled up , a man gets out . and said im from the Irish tour board . im checking on you trip . what?????
This is Rowena Taheny, I grew up with her, she used to sing for me. Its good to hear she has gone somewhere with her music. There is just something mystical and magical about Celtic women, you will always hold a place in my heart Rowena... ;-)
I remember listening to this sort music when i was a little lad and loathed it, but years later stumbling across it i have a change of heart. Absolutely wonderful! So soothing, it humbles me!
Sorry for bothering you for naught, but I've figured it out, thanks to the same song in a different video of the same song, sung by a man.
It shows the text on the video itself, and there it's written 1860 and so on, which makes it clear it isn't the age of anyone, but the year 1860, and then always 10 years later until the end, when it's only 2 years later.
Thanks to the uploader of this video/audio; sung by this woman it's sounds incredibly beautiful, although a bit haunting, as it is sad.
What does the number 18 mentioned in this song mean?
I guess the second changing number is supposedly the fathers age, so the second should be his son's age, but wouldn't that also have to change? So maybe I didn't get the meaning of it after all. Can someone enlighten me? TIA!
@alifefullofmusic It's a year: 1860, 1870, 1880 etc. All 5 verses are letters from father to son. Kilkelly is name of village, Ireland (I'm sure that you know :)) and the numbers are the date.
@alifefullofmusic Hello. Those numbers is period 1860 thru 1892.Lirics says about work in England cos words are updated.Actually its a story from 19th century.Authors (The Jones brothers) based the song on letters from their ancestor to his son John who emigrated to America. It was Bryan Hunt.He was illiterate so the letters were written by Patrick McNamara who is mentioned in the begining of this song.

I hope that you have checked out Loreena McKennitt's repertoire. Astonishingly beautiful music.
This is Rowena Taheny... a beautiful singer. Her version of Flower of Magherally is also quite beautiful...but not as touching as Kilkelly Ireland.

18 and 60 is an old-fashioned way of saying that the year was 1860.
