  • you need a rebuild mate. one of your con rods are fucked.

  • The rattle can noise is the timing chain. The second louder noise is one of your connecting rods. The reason why it takes a Minut or two to start knocking is bc this is the time it takes for your oil to warm up and become thinner. The engine just needs to be rebuilt

  • water in ur motor?

  • KA OR SR ???? im looking to be getting a RB

  • i am a Nissan tech , on Nissans data base they say for the ka24de (Altima, 240sx, p/u hardbody,) to remove the top chain guide. be deleting this peace it should take care of the noise, remove the valve cover and take off the guide above the chain it will be two 10mm bolts and discard the bolts and guide.

do this first and drive on it for awhile and if noise is still there take necessary additional action

  • remove the top and side chain guides on the lower timing chain there was a TSB out for that

  • IDK what that wood pecker sound is in the middle to end! But in the beggining is the timing guide hitting the valve cover! Mine is doing the same thing now!! Same exact noise

  • mine did the same thing till it locked up 10 mins later

  • Turn it off turn it off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Only thing your going to get out of that is more things fucked up!

  • my 240sx its making that sound 2 but not that bad and my motor is shaking 2but my question is that my head and valve cover gets really hot after 5 min so help please !

  • LOL!!!! It went from rattle rattle rattle to KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK and it just had me laughing

  • ka's are so relaible when tuned properly. wooh! i love my ka! :) ..good luck with that fix tho man

  • its not in the block, its in the head. take the steth, and go from the block up to the head, l and r until the knock becomes the loudest.

  • yea ka's are notorious for fucked up chain rattle, but still fuck sr's and try to avoid them at all costs lol

  • i got the same lil noise but like 0-10 secs in the video.. is that normal? it doesnt make the other loud noiose but its just a small one sounds like its coming from the head...but runs strong is that bad?

  • If all else said below has been tried and still failed. When your water pump is starting to give way, it will also create that same rattling knocking sound. i've been working on these engines for 7 years and know the knooks and crannies...give it a shot....

  • @DriftmanX

good advice. ya mine is doing this exact same thing and has ben for a while my water pump just went out too. hopefully when i replace it it will be smooth. thnx again.

  • Yea you should take off the top valve cover.. there will be a chain guild on the most top part of the head, see if that is snapped off and if it is you should probably have it re timed and dont run it. had the same problem I ran mine and had nothing but a whole new list of problems.. Good luck with it!

  • It sounds like your top chain is loose and has fallen off and started knocking the top valve cover

  • I replaced timing kit on ka24de dohc and when engine gets hot I hear a knocking sound and it also struggles to go up hills . the ignition timing is off like 10 degrees advanced with the distributor all the way counter clock wise (retarted). I think the cam chain is off one link, but the tech that helped me said the car would not start if the chain is off a link. IS that true. because i want to move it back one link and also remove the guides on upper chain. any ideas why it knocks when hot.

  • The louder noise may be a faulty hydraulic lifter. remove the valve cover and push down on each one. If you find one that moves more than a millimeter , then it should be replaced. Sometimes the lifters are integral so you will have to replace the rocker arm.

  • its your timing chain guide making that paint can noise mine was doin that just pop the valve cover off and take the guide out doesnt hurt a thing, as for louder noise i duno

  • At least Your Crank is dead... RIP

  • ITs not a rod knock everyone!! DAmn

  • sounds like a fucking wood pecker in ur engine

  • NO NO!!! cut it off! lol u can hear ur timing chain before the motor starts knocking. it has stretched so far its a wonder it hasnt broken yet haha that was worse than scratching the chalk board

  • Feel sorry for you bro.

I just got a 240sx with the same engine and I been havin random troubles with it, heard that tickatickaticka sound and got scared.

thanks to your vid its just the timing guides.

  • yeah goodluck i was gonna say lifters but then when it got to about 45 secs in i was like sorry....

lol but on real some real talk got to that second half and i was like... damn

  • oh! well theres your problem!

  • :( i was going to say chain guides, mine are ticking right now, taking them out tom :( but sorry to hear that dude ka's are getting harder to find every day

  • give you 50 bucks for your engine harness

  • its easier to fix than u thought....all u have to do is get a new motor for the damn thing thats all lol...

  • ahh fuck it sounded like just ur timing chain guides at first..then ........dude im sorry.....

  • Timing chain slap. Get new tensioners and get rid of the top and right side guards.

    Common KA problem.

  • OH shit. Didn't hear the second half of the video.

    RIP

    lol.

  • poor lil KA.

    RIP

  • DAMN dude just buy another engine

  • Oh wow... that just ain't right

  • Damn.

  • diffently ur timeing chain man (nt easy 2 fix) it cheeper to jus get a new engine

  • how to fix

call animal control they can removed the woodpecker with no problem

  • thats your timing chain guides. you can remove them with no harm to the car at all... oh shit... nvm ... i jjust heard the knocking... damn. your fucked..

  • wow holy engine knock batman

  • my s13 has the same problem the timing chain sounded like that and i replaced it but it that noise didnt go away

  • that rattling sound in the beginning is the timing chain, same sound in mine but that knocking is realy bad

  • mine sounds just like that in the start but not with that loud knocking after the first min

  • i'm gettin a 240sx this coming week, hope it doesn't sound like that.... you should get that fixed ASAP!

  • my ka sounds just like that haha i gotta re place it this week prolly gona get a CA18DET

  • my old b12 sentra made that same noise on cold days. Went away when the engine got warm. Just put in a lot of oil. Does shit to your cat but who cares eh?

  • bro i have like 245 k in in my ka and runs very good

  • timing chain!

  • I'll admit didn't know shit when it happened at first. I got a fsm and fixed it, bitch.

  • @gripaholic how did you fix your ka ? my does that too ! help

  • ITS A PISTON OMG ITS A PISTON. MAYBE A CAM SHAFT OMG!!!! MY POOR CAR. you didnt need a vid for this man. just look it up and youll SEE THE VAST AND ALL POWERFULL ALL KNOWING INTERNET. ass

  • god damn makes me wonder just how fucking hard people brutalize their engines. I have nearly 200k on my 95 ka24e and it purrs like a kitten

  • they didnt make the ka24e in 1995. they started the ka24de in 1991.

  • Ok, if they didnt make the ka24e in 95, maybe they made it in 94 and stuffed it into my 95 nissan hardbody. Ya think?

  • yap...

KA24De on Hardbody 95-96. Had both cars.

    Now I have a '02 Frontier KA24DE AUTOM.

    SOoooo yap.

  • lol I hear ya, I got a !1986! abused toyota celica gts as my first with 186k and now its at 199k but I rebuilt it and cleaned out the motor cuz there was a fuckign rats nest in it and now it drives like......well ok it drives liek poppy sometimes, but only on some really fuckin cold days

  • first sounds r your top your chain guide are broken.second sound sounds like a rod knock

  • DUDE!! i swear to god!

I just bought a 240 and its been doing the EXACT same thing as this... ive asked everyone and everyone keeps telling me its a lowwerend problem... like a spun bearing or a connecting rod thrown... but then u think the car wouldnt even start right?

anyways... if all of you are saying that my Timing belt is just off, You all are going to save me a TTOONN of money cuz i was just going to spit out the money for another Ka24e

now all of it can just go towards fixing that

  • if you gonna get another KA dont go single cam go DOHC.

  • YO, i have the same noise, and the reason is that the chain within the engine has been stretched out for a long time that it doesnt stretch bak to the original form wen the car is not rev, or is in idle!!! u just need to get that changed and thats all bro!!! ull be good as set!!!

  • my 96 is having that knocking sound. not as bad as yours when you get to 35 seconds. but what would you believe it is?

  • It could be a loose timing chain hitting the valve cover, connecting rods hitting the bottom of the oil pan, it could be piston slap. It could be a number of things. The best thing to do is take off the valve cover and check the timing chain, the tensioners, and timing guides.

  • sorry i should have watched the whole video to the end...that last part wasnt sounding like timing chain rattle...u might just have another problem apart of the timing chain on ur hand.....worst case scenario it ur rod knockink hitting the top.

  • same knocking sound to yours i had not too long ago....changed the timing chain and tensioners and the sound is gone...the rattle is very common for 240's over 100k miles....get the timing chain kit even the ones from ebay will do the trick like what i did...it sounds so much better now and my car runs as strong as ever...enough to take out civic SI's with ease and even keep up to z32 and i beat a 1.8T jetta the other day.lol poor guy

  • yeah i removed the timing chain guides yesterday. i changed back to my stock FPR and the noise went away.

  • @gripaholic wtf is fpr?

  • is it possible that the infamous timing chain guides are breaking?
