Sei que as condições que tiveram foram muito duras, por norma são sempre para as duas primeiras missões. Não retiro o mérito que tiveram e com toda a certeza fizeram aquilo que tinham de fazer mas não venhas cá dizer que limparam isto e aquilo.
Claro que as situações e o povo na Bósnia e em Timor são bem diferentes e a diferença é que em Timor por norma as armas são catanas, paus e pedras, já na Bósnia pia mais fino.
Eu não reparei na palavra "Balkans"e pensei que te estavas a referir a Timor.
De qualquer das formas este video como fala de Timor mantenho aquilo que disse e a GNR faz lá um excelente trabalho.
Duranta as missões na Bósnia morreram 5 paraquedistas e foi sempre em acidentes, o primeiro acidente foi em circunstancias duvidosas e levous mais 7 italianos para a cova (o tal da cluster bomb). Ninguém morreu em combate.
About those that tried to justify how efficient the GNR was in the Balkans for having 0 Deaths. That is a disrespect to all the Paratroopers that were there many years before GNR was sent. I was there on the second mission of the Portuguese peace force and GNR never dreamed about going there at the time. It was a war scenario to which they had no training. So GNR can thank the poorly equipped but excellently trained paratroopers that cleared the way and yes we did loose about a dozen men there!
@TimelessLuso Eu estive na 1ª missão pá no 1º bipara e a Gnr chegou depois da 1ª missão e antes da 2ª por isso não digas asneiras. Perderam homens mas foi em acidentes e não foram tantos como estás a dizer, nunca estiveste debaixo de fogo a não ser a assar frangos. Não foste limpar caminho nenhum, já estava limpo quando chegas-te lá. Não desvalorizes o excelente trabalho da Gnr e apesar de eu não gostar muito deles, eles é que fazem um excelente trabalho lá. @natsumoto69; a primeira missão foi em 5 de Janeiro de 1996 com 900 homens do 2° BIAT. As forças Portuguesas incluíam: um Destacamento de Ligação operando ao nível da Brigada e Comando da IFOR, um destacamento de Apoio e Serviço com mais de 100 homens, e o BIAT com cerca de 750 elementos. Nem um GNR, nem 1 único. Só muito depois dos páras fazerem o seu serviço é que a GNR entrou em campo para policiar e antes deles foram enviados elementos da PSP.

O serviço que os páras fizeram foi estarem lá. Não tiro o valor de lá terem estado mas não fizeram nada do outro mundo, estiveram lá.
Não limpaste o caminho para a GNR e a GNR não fez lá nada de especial mas faz em Timor toda a diferença.
Também os páras faziam se tivessem ordem para arriar nos timorenses, mas não tinham...
I am Portuguese and I see allot of pride in the comments here! Keep in mind that the GNR is not only effective and respected for their training, equipment or force, they have an historical connection to the people of Timor since it was part of the Portuguese empire and we speak the same language. It is easier for the people to respect the authority of a Portuguese speaking police or military than an English one. Most of the people are uneducated.
GNR are respected because if you try to be a smart-ass they'll beat you with that stick you see them wielding and give you a swift kick in the ass when they let you go. Maybe not the ideal way of solving problems but in some situations (as it has been during the last year in Timor for example) you just have to do what you have to do.
@Youtubitiano GNR normally play the same role as the Portuguese Police. And they are equipped at the same way and take care of the same situations, for example robberies, road security, security at the stadiums on football weekend matches. They're dressed like because the task they were assigned this time is a little different of those they're used to. But they still look badass ;)

The portuguese presence in Timor was always very tiny, and the result was the complet desertion of the portuguese administration and army (some soldiers without equipment to confront the timorese rebels and the indonesian pressure) in 75. The portuguese departure was made in a disorganised way. Portugal effectively abandoned East Timor and it unilaterally declared itself independent in 1975.
Decolonization had to happen. But how it happened, was a desaster! One doesn't skip as if, all of a sudden, one were out of responsibility. It caused more destruction, than 500 years domination! The then new leaders in Lisbon were resented militaries, somewhat turned "leftists" & politicians with no significant experience, exiled for years, blinded by some sort of "europeistic modernity", with no link to mentalities, wishes, historic burdens. Indonesia ruled Timor by force and in this case you should blame NATO and the neighbouring countries that allowed Indonesia to murder for over 20 years.
The portuguese are very proud in its armed and police forces working overseas to enforce peace and stabilize countries in trouble. Although in small numbers, the role played by portuguese detachements is praised by all coalition and UN commanders. Proud to be portuguese!
É verdade que as nossas ruas sao inseguras e que a gnr em Portugal faz muita falta para por a malta na ordem, mas cada força tem a sua especialidade e não é saudavel termos a brigada 24h por dia nas ruas a vigiar nos como se estivesse-mos em estado de sitio. When Timor was invaded in 1975 there was a civil war goung on. In Portugal the situation wan almost civil war also. We don´t feel guilty at all about Timor.

Of course, there are some special and elite units from GNR and PSP well equiped and trained, mostly in the bigger cities! But in many stations around the country, agents are still equiped with the old Walther P38 pistol, old cars and without body armour! Many police buildings are very old and without working conditions!
The violent crime is growing all across the nation! Unfortunately, the peaceful, quiet and secure country is disappearing slowly! The political powers must do more to help keep law and order!
For exemple, is very sad to read news about agents being shot in action without wearing body armour vests! At least, all agents should have body armour vests!
As you see, to put just this 129 men in East-Timor (on the other side of the world), well equiped and trained, is a proportional great effort from Portugal; to help maintain law and order there!

Quanto a sermos melhores é relativo, acredita que as SAS da Austrália conseguem fazer uma mossa muito grande se quiserem, apenas não podem porque estão lá em missão de paz... mesmo assim acho a GNR superior a qualquer outra força presente em Timor. Segundo, ele não disse que tinha uma má relação com a coligação, ele disse que tinha uma boa relação com eles, o Inglês dele está enferrujado, ele disse que era muito fácil trabalhar com eles e que tinha uma relação muito boa com o comando. Vê se tens calma! São nossos aliados.
As SAS, que estão presentes em Timor são Australianas. Informa-te e não sejas arrogante. E por acaso são das melhores forças de intervenção, muito boa e moderna. Para além das SAS a Austrália também tem lá o seu exército regular e a RAF Australiana.

@jonaspv, as tropas portuguesas não fugiram em 75 com o rabo entre as pernas, receberam ordens para não combater. Após o 25 de Abril a intenção era dar a independência a todas as ex-colónias. Podes dizer que essa independência não foi dada da melhor forma, mas não que fugiram por medo de combater. Pelo teu comentário fica claro que a tua família não foi afectada pelas guerras no Ultramar. Um país decente não luta por causas perdidas!

Desde quando eu disse que a GNR está mal equipada? Está bastante bem equipada, agora o que eu disse é que está "pior" equipada que o exército Australiano.
Vai uma grande diferença entre as duas coisas, visto que o exército Australiano é muitíssimo bem equipado devido à enorme quantidade de dinheiro gasta no seu exército e mais ainda às armas e equipamento topo de gama provenientes dos EUA devido ao pacto ANZUS. No entanto a GNR tem uma prestação tão boa ou melhor que eles, o que é um grande elogio da minha parte. Perderam homens mas foi em acidentes e não foram tantos como estás a dizer, nunca estiveste debaixo de fogo a não ser a assar frangos. Não foste limpar caminho nenhum, já estava limpo quando chegas-te lá. Não desvalorizes o excelente trabalho da Gnr e apesar de eu não gostar muito deles, eles é que fazem um excelente trabalho lá. @natsumoto69; a primeira missão foi em 5 de Janeiro de 1996 com 900 homens do 2° BIAT. As forças Portuguesas incluíam: um Destacamento de Ligação operando ao nível da Brigada e Comando da IFOR, um destacamento de Apoio e Serviço com mais de 100 homens, e o BIAT com cerca de 750 elementos. Nem um GNR, nem 1 único. Só muito depois dos páras fazerem o seu serviço é que a GNR entrou em campo para policiar e antes deles foram enviados elementos da PSP.

O serviço que os páras fizeram foi estarem lá. Não tiro o valor de lá terem estado mas não fizeram nada do outro mundo, estiveram lá.
Não limpaste o caminho para a GNR e a GNR não fez lá nada de especial mas faz em Timor toda a diferença.
Também os páras faziam se tivessem ordem para arriar nos timorenses, mas não tinham...

I am Portuguese and I see allot of pride in the comments here! Keep in mind that the GNR is not only effective and respected for their training, equipment or force, they have an historical connection to the people of Timor since it was part of the Portuguese empire and we speak the same language. It is easier for the people to respect the authority of a Portuguese speaking police or military than an English one. Most of the people are uneducated.

GNR are respected because if you try to be a smart-ass they'll beat you with that stick you see them wielding and give you a swift kick in the ass when they let you go. Maybe not the ideal way of solving problems but in some situations (as it has been during the last year in Timor for example) you just have to do what you have to do.

@Youtubitiano GNR normally play the same role as the Portuguese Police. And they are equipped at the same way and take care of the same situations, for example robberies, road security, security at the stadiums on football weekend matches. They're dressed like because the task they were assigned this time is a little different of those they're used to. But they still look badass ;)

@TheCaptainFaz East Timor was a former colonial territory under administration of a portuguese governor. The portuguese presence in Timor was always very tiny, and the result was the complet desertion of the portuguese administration and army (some soldiers without equipment to confront the timorese rebels and the indonesian pressure) in 75. The portuguese departure was made in a disorganised way. Portugal effectively abandoned East Timor and it unilaterally declared itself independent in 1975.

Ex-Colonial Nations? First, East Timor was a piece of the Portuguese Empire, not just a colony, neither we ever used the therm "Colony" to refer to overseas provinces. Better the Portuguese "Colonealism" than the "oil" interest from the vicious and vile who only want to rip off such a small nation.

I mean, we were the bad guys for ruling nations on the other side of the world and then we are still the bad guys for giving them the independence?
Indonesia ruled Timor by force and in this case you should blame NATO and the neighbouring countries that allowed Indonesia to murder for over 20 years.

É verdade que as nossas ruas sao inseguras e que a gnr em Portugal faz muita falta para por a malta na ordem, mas cada força tem a sua especialidade e não é saudavel termos a brigada 24h por dia nas ruas a vigiar nos como se estivesse-mos em estado de sitio. E nada me orgulha mais do que ver que actualmente o meu país é um país que cumpre os seus compromissos internacionais, e tem uma força que representa segurança e respeito onde quer que actue.

Of course, there are some special and elite units from GNR and PSP well equiped and trained, mostly in the bigger cities! But in many stations around the country, agents are still equiped with the old Walther P38 pistol, old cars and without body armour! Many police buildings are very old and without working conditions!

Quanto a sermos melhores é relativo, acredita que as SAS da Austrália conseguem fazer uma mossa muito grande se quiserem, apenas não podem porque estão lá em missão de paz... mesmo assim acho a GNR superior a qualquer outra força presente em Timor. @jonaspv, as tropas portuguesas não fugiram em 75 com o rabo entre as pernas, receberam ordens para não combater. Após o 25 de Abril a intenção era dar a independência a todas as ex-colónias. Podes dizer que essa independência não foi dada da melhor forma, mas não que fugiram por medo de combater. Pelo teu comentário fica claro que a tua família não foi afectada pelas guerras no Ultramar. Um país decente não luta por causas perdidas!

Vai uma grande diferença entre as duas coisas, visto que o exército Australiano é muitíssimo bem equipado devido à enorme quantidade de dinheiro gasta no seu exército e mais ainda às armas e equipamento topo de gama provenientes dos EUA devido ao pacto ANZUS. No entanto a GNR tem uma prestação tão boa ou melhor que eles, o que é um grande elogio da minha parte. Com todo o respeito, eu não levei a mal mas por favor, não me trates por você... especialmente no Youtube xD

as fardas que usam sempre que sao missões no estrangeiro sao sempre assim, sendo de forças especiais ou nao. podem ser militares da gnr normais..Qualquer militar tem formação para actuar nessas condiçoes é claro que um GNR com 40 anos nao tem a capacidade de um de 20.
