I saw MOF and I liked all three of the songwriters material and singing. They are obviously fans of each other's material. I read an interview with Conor who said about playing Smoking From Shooting (an MMJ tune that MOF rocked harder and better than MMJ in my opinion) that he looked over at Jim wailing in his finest vocal form and said to himself "this is what it must feel like to play in My Morning Jacket, the greatest rock band in the world". He was blown away by Jim's talent.
In terms of musicianship Oberst technically does nothing better than the others. For every person that likes his songwriting there are two who consider it whining. Ward is a better guitarist. James does awesome backing vocals and has by far the more badass attitude of them all. Mogis is a producer, and therefore hes bound to be underrated. Oberst has had most commercial succes, and is bound to be overrated. I love Oberst(reason i found MOF), but its weird to consider him superior to the others.
@tomgotbail yeah i hear ya, i think conor was really humbled to be compared and playing with the likes of jim james and m.ward. conor's lyrics and songwriting are amazing, but a lot of bright eyes fans disregard jim james and m.ward from the MOF group. to me, there is no MOF without jim james. he steals the show live, every single time.
@serinedream I agree. Conor does seem in MOF as the biggest of the three, however I have a contradicting opinion towards yours on Jim James. I believe Mike Mogis is the most underrated of them. Even though he is part of Bright Eyes, Bright Eyes is often just recognized as Conor, which it once was, but now it is Conor, Nate Walcott, and Mike. However, I still do agree that Conor plays the biggest role in the song writing of their album.
Probly the most important moment is when i found m>ward and bright eyes. Thanks to my friend and they have both been my top 2 favorite bands ever since 1 1/2 years ago
that's the thing....i guarantee everyone has the thought at least once while listening to bright eyes, "how am I not bored by this?" but you're just not...lyrics are incredible, melodies are divine, ugh, too good haha
why would anyone hate on bright eyes? what a body of music! and conor is a great songwriter, whether you apprectiate the content or not. and the fact that they all got on stage together and played this well is a testament to all of their talent in and of itself.
Dude...bright eyes IS Conor. So you're trying to say conor shouldn't let conor write the songs? At least know what you're talking about before you criticise something.

@xloveologyx Conor is not Bright Eyes. Bright Eyes includes Mike Mogis and this other dude. but yeah, otherwise it would be a solo thing.

Yeah, which is why he's been compared to Bob Dylan, and has written literally life changing songs.
Think again, he's not an idiot.
