@timcomeau Oh, that's left foot braking. It helps when you only need a little brakes to help the car turn in. I don't have the throttle on hard when I'm doing that. Throttle makes the rear end stick, brakes make the front end stick. It's all about balance.
@timcomeau lift of the throttle does the same as putting some brake, left foot braking is only useful on a rear engine car (although you can right foot brake it all the same), or as an advanced technique to turn a bit more while going full speed with an FF car.
@91cannibal Nope, it's not double clutching, which is an outdated technique in modern sports cars. No need to push the clutch pedal twice. Just push it once, blip the throttle and release.

my 944 went bye-bye :( It was a '83. Whoever says Porsches aren't reliable is terribly mistaken. As old as it was, it gave me very little greif. Great car.
Dude, ur technique is all wrong... if u actually do this on a track coming down the straight ul go into the tire wall for sure.. ur brake pressure is erratic and in a single seater with no brake booster you will spin out for sure...
Rahil, I love it when wannabee's try to school me on how to drive a 944/924S! It isn't a single seater, it's a 924S. Yes, the brake pressure isn't perfectly maintained.....but strangely enough, it's maintained so that I don't lock up. In fact it's maintained well enough to set track records at all SoCal tracks in the 944 Spec class, well enough to win consecutive championships and 3-4 hour night endurance races. Wanna compare pics of our trophy shelves? Dumbass!
Good stuff. My guess is that most of manual drivers that are keen on performance cars know how to heel and toe but very few know how to do it that fast, including me.
@jorgeconrico why is it funny you have to look up "how-to videos" online because you cant do something then laugh at someone thats teaching you how to drive. Noob. Im not a professional driver, as im sure you arent either so take what you experience and take with it what you want.
The whole reason for heel and toeing IS to keep the car stable while downshifting. If you don't do it right, the downshifting will add to the decelleration already being caused by the brakes, right? Try going from 4th gear, to third, then down to 2nd. You need to match revs well.
Nice Video, you're Heel/toe technique is quite fluid compared to others that I've seen. Do you have any advice on how to keep the car stable when you downshift, I have trouble keeping my tail end under control sometimes when I go uphill shifting down from 4th to 2nd?

Heel/toe technique is widely used by many racers including professionals who aimlessly strive to better this technique. If you want to see me performing real time heel and toe, see some of my race videos. Do a search for 944 Spec racing or Comeau vs. Hondas at Cal Speedway.
Good video bro. Makes me miss the track they use to have here in Hawaii. Right when I got my Boxster, they closed. Now there is no track. It was a sad day.
Yep, I can relate. No track here in San Diego either. Same reason. Land is too expensive. Make some sacrafice to PELE and maybe she'll make the big island a little bigger?
can i ask you, since you seem an experienced driver, can you share any opinions about other cars of the similar class you drove? (especially if you had experiences with civic type-r's and older SiR's)
Zero, No worries , mate. I learned this technique on a 1.6 liter 5 speed Nissan Sentra. Keep driving the simulator for now! Porsche 944's or the 924S's are very affordable now.
Gosh I cant belieVE why people criticise this video for the 944, pedals etc.. Ok, its not a 911 BUT a real car enthusiast can have fun with any car, weak or strong (well... preferably above 130bhp :P)
As for the technique, ethis was really percise! Your video was great help when I was searching to learn heel-and-toe downshift (im just 16 so, you understand :P)
simulators will have to do for me now, but im looking for the real thing soon (legaly ofcourse)
Kenggy, My clutch disc that looked new after 2 seasons of racing and the rather large shelf of racing trophies in my shop would suggest otherwise........maybe you want to check out my driving resume at the Comeau Racing site?
Coldspoon... You don't know dick about european cars do you? But the Porshe 944 is crap... The Turbo is the only acceptable one and even on that one it only gets better past 5000rpm... Big slow, ugly. That's a pimp car. But awesome footwork. Really great. Thanks for the video.
Using left foot braking is a very effective technique for racing. You're probably wasting time moving your right foot between the brake pedal and gas pedal if you only use the one foot.
Its better for the clutch, and its a very effective in saving the performance, and reliability of you tranny. Not to mention it is the fastest way to threw a turn........so next time u should find out what they are doing and what they are doing it for, B4 u post an idiotic, and ignorant comment.
Yes, the engine's off. Read the video descrip. The timing and movements are spot on. Like I said, see my real time racing videos. Do a search for 944 spec racing.
I'll try not to disappoint you in the future. Please rate my videos if you like them.
We're working on some more fun videos currently. You can't believe the places we can mount the bullet camera! You might want to subscribe to my videos for instant notification when they are posted.
It's obvioius the negative comments are from idiots who have no idea what they are talking about. You are one of the best 944 drivers out there, smooth and awesome technique. This is a great learning tool and I appreciate you taking the time to share it with us.
Please see my live racing videos. This is a practice training video. I can downshift super smooth. In fact, when we pulled my clutch disc out after 2.5 seasons of 944 spec racing, including five 3 to 4 hour enduros, it still looked pretty fresh. The owner of the shop couldn't believe it when he saw the clutch disc! Watch my video at Willow Springs uploaded by Billy Newport at Trackpedia.
Good video, Tim! I especially like the calling the gears in German, lol.
ScudPham: I've been on the track in FWD cars for longer than I've been racing RWD, and I have never heard of left foot braking being primarily a FWD technique. It can help the car rotate, but that's not the only benefit, and FWD guys are definitely not the only ones using it to their advantage.
There's a difference between brake balance(pressure bias) and CAR balance. I don't have time or space here to teach you how to drive. I didn't need a search to teach me about left foot braking.I do it. If you're not doing it, you're wasting time.
As said you can use left foot breaking in fwd, rwd and 4wd if you want. This a very good way of ilimenating understeer however dont do it too hard or you might end up facing in the wrong direction. :D
Left foot braking is primarily used by good drivers. It doesn't matter if it's front or rear wheel drive or 4 wheel drive. It's about weight shift,or decelleration without downshifting, not braking bias.
First of all braking bias is the braking balance of the vehicle and you contradict yourself because weight shift is all about balance. Also, left-foot braking is primarily for fwd cars and educated professional drivers would know that. I just did a search now and all the cars featured were fwd. Left-foot braking is a technique that CAN be used, not something that SHOULD be used like heel and toe so saying all good drivers use it would be unreasonable.
Left-foot braking is primarily for fwd cars. When driven under acceleration with no brakes applied, a front wheel drive car will understeer when the front wheels are turned. To overcome the understeer, the technique is used to change brake bias to the rear. By using a combination of throttle and brake you can change from understeer to neutralsteer to oversteer.
Sure, you can go from 5th to 2nd. You just have to wait longer to let out the clutch and then you BETTER have the revs matched well. Also, selecting each gear while downshifting helps to keep track of the amount that you tach it up for the smoothest downshifts.
If I'm racing, I need to be in a gear. If I have to go evasive in a braking zone and I don't have the car in gear to put power down, and thus weight, to the rear of my car for traction, I, myself, could end up part of a wreck.
Heel and toe is so much fun man :D once in a while i do it in my truck when downshifting at a light. It's fun to do and also makes ride really confortable since you dont get any jerking around since the engine is spinning with the same speed as the wheels and the transmissoin :)
Thanks. Hope it helps get the flow of foot/pedal motion down for beginners because this skill set is so critical for road racing. I thought about adding some light, but it seemed like enough at the time. Watch the video again and pay attention to the brake pedal pressure. If I was applying continuously perfect threshold brake pedal pressure you would see less change in the pedal.
lol was searching for the bass drum technique XD

That's not a 944 though.

Desmo,
Yes, but my 924S is a little faster than your Golf....
Many parts are shared between the VW, Audi, and Porsche cars. Porsche + Audi Division, Distributed thru Volkswagen of America.
I remember when Porsche was a KG, and not an AG.

If you want to see me performing real time heel and toe, see some of my race videos. Do a search for Comeau vs. Hondas at Cal Speedway.

Good video bro. Makes me miss the track they use to have here in Hawaii. Right when I got my Boxster, they closed. Now there is no track. It was a sad day.
KKD808 3 years ago
Yep, I can relate. No track here in San Diego either. Same reason. Land is too expensive. Make some sacrafice to PELE and maybe she'll make the big island a little bigger?
timcomeau 3 years ago
Dude what island are you on. I live on the big island and I have heard some rumors of a track being built in kona sometime.
willmon8 3 years ago
No, really. We only race 944's and 924S's. Did you get a chance to see my other racing videos?
timcomeau 3 years ago
yup! i sure did! :p

We don't do Hondas! :)
We beat them!
timcomeau 3 years ago
lol xD
so what about other cars?
zerosk8cy 3 years ago
heh! thats alright!
can i ask you, since you seem an experienced driver, can you share any opinions about other cars of the similar class you drove? (especially if you had experiences with civic type-r's and older SiR's)
zerosk8cy 3 years ago
Zero, No worries , mate. I learned this technique on a 1.6 liter 5 speed Nissan Sentra. Keep driving the simulator for now! Porsche 944's or the 924S's are very affordable now.
timcomeau 3 years ago
Gosh I cant belieVE why people criticise this video for the 944, pedals etc.. Ok, its not a 911 BUT a real car enthusiast can have fun with any car, weak or strong (well... preferably above 130bhp :P)
As for the technique, ethis was really percise! Your video was great help when I was searching to learn heel-and-toe downshift (im just 16 so, you understand :P)
simulators will have to do for me now, but im looking for the real thing soon (legaly ofcourse)

I own a 55 facelift VW polo, this doesnt have the same pedals.

caution this guy knows nothing about heel and toe!

Kenggy, My clutch disc that looked new after 2 seasons of racing and the rather large shelf of racing trophies in my shop would suggest otherwise........maybe you want to check out my driving resume at the Comeau Racing site?
Enjoy my other 944 Spec racing videos.

Coldspoon,

Your Porsche has the same pedal rubbers as a lowly Volkswagen Polo...this amuses me greatly.
coldspoon 3 years ago
No, not crap.
Using left foot braking is a very effective technique for racing. You're probably wasting time moving your right foot between the brake pedal and gas pedal if you only use the one foot.

wtf using the both foot for the brake,,,,thats crap
glan6987 3 years ago
Its better for the clutch, and its a very effective in saving the performance, and reliability of you tranny. Not to mention it is the fastest way to threw a turn........so next time u should find out what they are doing and what they are doing it for, B4 u post an idiotic, and ignorant comment.

Very entertaining, but the gears would have to be masculine in german ... Erster (Gang), zweiter, dritter, vierter, fünfter etc.

Dont be offended but...thats not smooth..infact...ure doing that with engine turned off...and...u dont get the timing right..
Tomica899 4 years ago
Tomica,
Yes, the engine's off. Read the video descrip. The timing and movements are spot on. Like I said, see my real time racing videos. Do a search for 944 spec racing.

Tim,
It's obvioius the negative comments are from idiots who have no idea what they are talking about. You are one of the best 944 drivers out there, smooth and awesome technique. This is a great learning tool and I appreciate you taking the time to share it with us.
dmalo810 4 years ago 3
Apple,
Please see my live racing videos.

Lauiop,
It's part of a training video. See my other racing video called, "Porsche 944 vs Hondas at Cal Speedway" for real racing footage.
Death and M,
It didn't go slowly. LOL! I switched from German to English abruptly and I'm from San Diego, CA!

good imagination
but u must to try in real race and look how your technic use

Dude, your accent slowly went from german to redneck? WTF?
DeathAndMajesty 4 years ago
Good video, Tim! I especially like the calling the gears in German, lol.
ScudPham: I've been on the track in FWD cars for longer than I've been racing RWD, and I have never heard of left foot braking being primarily a FWD technique. It can help the car rotate, but that's not the only benefit, and FWD guys are definitely not the only ones using it to their advantage.
WestonP22 4 years ago 2
ScudPham,
There's a difference between brake balance(pressure bias) and CAR balance. I don't have time or space here to teach you how to drive. I didn't need a search to teach me about left foot braking.I do it. If you're not doing it, you're wasting time.
timcomeau 4 years ago
As said you can use left foot breaking in fwd, rwd and 4wd if you want. This a very good way of ilimenating understeer however dont do it too hard or you might end up facing in the wrong direction. :D
niracka 4 years ago
ScudPham,
Left foot braking is primarily used by good drivers. It doesn't matter if it's front or rear wheel drive or 4 wheel drive. It's about weight shift,or decelleration without downshifting, not braking bias.
timcomeau 4 years ago
First of all braking bias is the braking balance of the vehicle and you contradict yourself because weight shift is all about balance. Also, left-foot braking is primarily for fwd cars and educated professional drivers would know that. I just did a search now and all the cars featured were fwd. Left-foot braking is a technique that CAN be used, not something that SHOULD be used like heel and toe so saying all good drivers use it would be unreasonable.
ScuderiaPham24 4 years ago 2
Left-foot braking is primarily for fwd cars. When driven under acceleration with no brakes applied, a front wheel drive car will understeer when the front wheels are turned. To overcome the understeer, the technique is used to change brake bias to the rear. By using a combination of throttle and brake you can change from understeer to neutralsteer to oversteer.
ScuderiaPham24 4 years ago
Ok! Thanks for the tip. ! I hope i'll be in a race car right now.. Haha.. Thanks!
foda82 4 years ago
Foda,
Sure, you can go from 5th to 2nd. You just have to wait longer to let out the clutch and then you BETTER have the revs matched well. Also, selecting each gear while downshifting helps to keep track of the amount that you tach it up for the smoothest downshifts.
If I'm racing, I need to be in a gear. If I have to go evasive in a braking zone and I don't have the car in gear to put power down, and thus weight, to the rear of my car for traction, I, myself, could end up part of a wreck.
timcomeau 4 years ago
Awesome man! And yeah i got a question for you. I am a beginner pardon me if i'm wrong. Can we downshift from 5th to 2nd in one shot?
foda82 4 years ago
Realy nice man ;-)
NitroNitrous 4 years ago
Heel and toe is so much fun man :D once in a while i do it in my truck when downshifting at a light. It's fun to do and also makes ride really confortable since you dont get any jerking around since the engine is spinning with the same speed as the wheels and the transmissoin :)
Triple88a 4 years ago
Keep practicing!
