Holy smokes! What a magnificent instrument, and an amazing piece! How can I have gone my whole life without hearing of this composer!? And this guy is just a wizard at the organ...I've never seen pedal work like this in all my life. Did you get a load of him playing two contrary-motion chromatic scales at once, at breakneck speed, from opposite ends of the pedalboard, meeting in the middle? I almost wet myself! :D Thanks for posting this! I'm getting the CD!
@JLeeGraham It's actually DVD, and it's phenomenal. Have you played "Octaves" yet? I might not have liked the music had I not been able to see it played here first. Now I can't get enough of it. Patel is absolutely amazing, isn't he?
@Larsky1010 No, I haven't, but I'm purchasing the collection. Patel seems to make everything look easy, but this appears to be some of the more challenging organ music out there. Demessieux must have been quite an organist, indeed.
@JLeeGraham I may be inaccurate here, but I believe I read that Patel did the entire DVD in one straight-through session. I haven't been able to find that again in the multi-lingual program notes. In any case his expertise is beyond anything I've yet seen! The organ has two consoles; three of the six manuals of the wood-encased console are mechanical; the other console in a faux marble finish is on the main floor level and is all electric.
@Larsky1010 It surprises me to learn that Patel may have done this entire DVD in a single session, and yet perhaps it doesn't. He has complete control of the instrument and his body, and is perfectly poised and cool no matter what feat of virtuosity he is working. He appears to waste no energy with hystrionics of any kind, so with that kind of focus and command, I suppose anything is possible! Thanks for the low-down on the instrument as well! What a wonder!
Bravo Maxime! - performance extraordinaire sur un orgue extraordinaire - Meilleur souvenir de Roquevaire en 2003 où vous parliez déjà de J Demessieux et de Charles Tournemire
Absolutely incredible piece, BUT I'm not sure the musical results are worth the HELL that would go into learning this. This is the kind of piece I would have to learn on a dare and the prize would have to be substantial!!!
Bravo on the performance, however - my hat is totally off to this guy.
I enjoy his playing and this instrument.
Etude = study. That's why it sounds like exercises.

Good work, as usual, on an instrument that needs more exposure. Likewise with the music of Demessieux.
