  • e Maysa voltou foi...Perfeição, Tom

  • One of the greatest songs of grand master TOM JOBIM!

  • i dont like this version .... it is so very fast

  • She is terrific!!!! She really has a perfect delivery on this song.

  • luscious.

  • Unfassbar- sie ist in diesem Stück eindeutig die Beste!!!!

  • Among the countless English-versions I've heard, this version is (by far) the closest to Brazilian music festive spirit.

    Jane is genius!!!

  • She looks kind of like Scarlet Johansen to me for some reason in this... she's gorgeous :)

  • @funkdragon23 - I'm glad you find Jane Monheit version perfect - enjoy it! For me she pours it on too thick - she over the top with it. Lots of singers are like this and lots of singers getting lots of praise for that type of performance - it's just not for me.

  • @bbrj127 - agree - other artists do it better... Susannah McCorkle for example..

  • Maybe I would like it better if I hadn't watched her sing it first. (Then again maybe not.) Love the song but I don't really care for her version.

  • @bbrj127 show me

  • @bbrj127 , I could not agree more. Singers today love themselves more than the song they are singing.

  • She has a wonderful voice, I love this song!!!

  • I prefer in portuguese,but this is great too;

  • Technically interesting and nice tempo but totally soulless to me. I wonder if The Manhattan Transfers ever did a version of this tune.

  • Wow talk about perfect pitch ... and a good memory! .. and by the way, she has got the coolest piano player ever backing her up.

  • Wow talk about perfect pitch ... and a good memory!

  • Now this is a professional. Bet we would never see this type of performance on the Grammys.

  • One of the best non-Elis Regina's version, if not the best .

  • I adore this song. I really wanna hate this rendition. I so love Elis's definative versions and this is cheesy and very un-sublime, but she has some funny sort of eager heart, and she dares to so comfortably butcher it. The band smokes it on the vamp on the way out and she, as whitely as humanly possible, grooves out like a 1980's hotel singer. But there a really dead versions out there, and this is not dead. 3 1/2 stars.

  • teamwork - that impresses the most.

  • Doesn't compare to the Elis Regina version. Sounds like she is singing on a broadway play stage. Okay, technically sound, but little heart in it. It sounds somewhat cold and without that deep feeling and passion that Regina has...

  • Tom Jobim.Muito bom(Very good).

  • Wou! \o/

  • NON HO PAROLE PER DESCRIVERE QUANTO SIA GRANDIOSA ARMONIOSA E FANTASTICAMENTE UNICA .....

  • Its like she's fast humping the song.

  • decent cover, and she is hot

  • Does somebody know where I can get this presentation on DVD?, I have the Rainbow Room's concert, it is awesome, but this one seems to be more "pure". Thanks.

  • ti adoro!

  • A+ I'd like to be in this audience...timeless song and Jane has the style...

  • She tries...This song sounds trully amazing in the voice of Elis regina singing in portuguese.

  • She takes NO subtleties...she is WAY too NYC broadway...SO NOT how this sexy lazy song shud be sung.

If you need to hear an upbeat version check out BASIA

  • blah blah blah... it a bossa... not a samba.... i hate it when people enjoy music that doesn't pass my strict standards of authenticity...... i'm a douche who like hear myself talk..... seriously people, shut the fuck up and enjoy this music. appreciate the fact that there is one more artist in the world who performs this type of music. It's called arranging

  • and all arrangements are made well or intelligent (a caricature of bossa, if you like)... Here have increased by 40 bpm and stop. Without to have understood the meaning of the song. Play it on.

Everyone then do what he wants, but not necessarily have to like. The problem is not "standards of authenticity", but of tasteful. It is not here.

  • Comment removed

  • @monkychop Ok you might be thinking that it sounds too much like some piano bar lounge version. I like that!! So do a lot of other people. We are not "too cool" for it. It's tasteful to me. Bossa to samba is not a big stretch for me. I mean bossa came from samba. It's not like they turned it into a calypso version with a heavy metal bridge section.

  • mah ... speed brings some problems: the machine gun effect () and the feeling tone of the bell (ding dong) that becomes even more evident due to their excessive speed. Why is there the possibility of "carry" the time and pitch out of the feeling of sameness. Play Elis Regina knows how to make the song a caress, instead of reciting sports extreme Monheit. Then the final did not really sense wants to see what is good at voice quibbling? -->

  • @monkychop Valid points, i know quite a few people that would be bothered by this version also. I've heard Regina's version for years, but i enjoy this one just as well. Even if i hated the arrangement, they got 2 out of 3 right in my book. Good song and good performance.

  • Are quite attentive to details, are trained in this. I respect the fact that the song you like, for me is too fast and breathless, reducing the song to something boring and predictable. I do not like, is tasteless and grotesque, but rightly so. The important thing is to have an explanation that makes sense.

  • Seems almost like they are mocking the song.

  • too much fast, is a bossanova, not a samba. At this tempo the elegance has gotten lost. In the end the pianobar appears...

  • @monkychop lets see you do any better.. I dont think you should decide how a tune gets played.. you play it the way ya want.. Fool. Music is written by a guide book and if it is its bland and boring.. go listen to some Lady Gaga or Amy Winehouse..

  • You can do everything, (Vincent Persichetti docet) but everything is not always well done. I can play it brutal, speed, tango, tarantella, with yodler and other, I know that most of these arrangements will be ugly or ridicule. This version seems a breathless race, a tongue-twister in order to make to see how fast it can, has lost the sense of piece, his text, to make a cartoon to show off muscles. At this point play it a polka... I just do not like and I said why. Thanks for your comment.

  • you r singing too fast, listen a little more to tom!

    Saudações do brazil ;)

  • com Elis é melhor mas e daí? com Elis é tudo melhor nem por isso essa versão mais "rapida" é ruim

  • I'm impressed. This tempo is unexpectedly delightful. And her voice, which sometimes annoys, me is really a joy to behold on this piece. I think I may be a fan now.

  • grat performance. I prefer it slower, but tempo sounds natural for her.. everyone is different

  • Love this song, and she absolutely nails it.

    To a cross.

  • Weird. but okayy..

  • Definitely, A Very Hot Babe!!!....oh yea,

    nice singing too!

  • The tempo is totally natural. It's all about context: it's performed just as Jane and her group intended. A gorgeous reading of this seminal song. Ease up on the hate and enjoy this for what it is, a loving and respectful interpretation of a world-class vocal jazz standard.

  • Everyone has their own interpretation of a song. I love her cover, damn sexy bitch

  • This can't be in 2004 because Michael Kamen (Piano) died in November 2003. But great song!!!

  • What?

Michael Kanan - one of the best pianists of the world is ALIVE. ???

  • Sorry man, I made a mistake. I thought the guy on the piano is Michael KAMEN, who actually was a composer for movies like "Lethal Weapon". He died in November 2003 But his name is Michael KANAN and he is still alive.

  • ...são as águas de março fechando o verão...

  • I think this version is too corny-cabaret -- the range of emotions that could be captured thru' the lyrics got buried. Too bad, cuz her voice is right on.

  • This lady seems nice and evidently is very pretty. She doesn't respect the words in this song. They come out as the waters of Mars a couple of times. Evidently such matters don't interest her, but should..

    Good band!

  • Thats why "The Blue Eyes" will be famous forever... perfect diction.

  • super!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Very different song and execution. She is superb. Also lovely face but need to trim down a bit.

  • tom jobimmmmmmm form braSil

  • You are SO full of it. She's lovely, her body is perfect.

Go buy yourself some magazines and find your version of photoshop/bulemic heaven....

  • Tom Jobim.

  • Antonio Carlos Jobim

  • Jane is awesome otherwise, but her manager failed her as this is not the best rendition of the song and is far from her best work. Jane is awesome and human. It aint bad, but not up to par.

  • beautiful voice, face but yess a little too fast

  • Yes and the tempo needs adjustment. A few lines sung in Brasilian would have been good too. Do you think the arranger was the same as the singer? She shoulda done it in the tempo Antonio composed it.

  • this is awesome!

  • Way too fast!

  • Too fast imo. The song is much better when slowed down. It's nice when it's in english, but still better in portuguese.

Not too big of a fan of Monheit's voice either...

  • @seikalym

Ué...mas o q vc está fazenso aqui então????

    Linda nulher, linda interpretação....

Tom Jobim iria se orgulhar de tê-la visto!!!

  • a bit rushed. I prefer Sofia's version. But what a great song!

  • i love her face wen she sings its priceless

  • ...I like Monheit's take on this.

The band really pushed her, but she delivers...

  • Very good work indeed, from both the singer and the band.

  • a very challenging piece to execute. she did all her best with all that body language and with all her talent..thats entertaining.

  • Vocal tip: She's doing that "sexy" thing with

her top lip to let the high range notes out.

This is an incredibly difficult song to remember all the lyrics to in the right order.

  • Oh, and she's was doing well.

But... at the end... it just sounds like a Disney movie song.

  • Well put. "Disney movie song;" exactly what I was thinking. I keep coming back to her hoping not to hear that.

  • Great!

I didn't know Jobim had written English lyrics for this music.

    It souds very good.

But... I think Jane sang it too fast and with too much strengh... it should be smoother... and calmer... it's supposed to be poetry.

  • Actually I prefer it to Cassandra Wilson's

    version which is a dirge.

  • TERRA PRETA

    watch?v=iXRcXsBmNwk

  • slow it down pleeaaaasssee!!!

  • It was composed with this rythm. Have you heard the Sergio Mendes' version? Or Jobim and Ellis Regina's?

  • She's really hawt..........but vocally she can't hold a candle to the Susannah McCorkle version.

  • Exactly right. This song is too good to do in a hurry. It was meant to do well...just a little slower.

  • I agree it's too fast... I guess she wanned to give it her own spin. It still sounds good though.

  • she is rushing like a runaway train.

  • diferente...no esta mal pero no se compara en mi opinión a la versión original es medio grasa esta.

  • Big Tom Jobim *--*

  • Great!

  • good for the first minte and a half

  • the hebrew version is fast too but its cute its "aquas de marco hebraico" on youtube

  • Jane s a fine singer, but her version really is too fast. ...the song is just not meant to be at this tempo, as it loses too much feeling, imo. The late Susannah McCorkle sang a version of this that was simply unbelieveable.

  • Best english version of the song i've ever heard.

the song in portuguese is more poetic, however its common for any translated song . Every language has it's own words that can't be translated properly.

  • I love JJ , so perfect

    thank you very much

    Your L.....

  • I feel the lyrics, lead us to, perhaps, a fleeting moment of enlightenment... Zen is when.. and Jane is fantastic !

  • Remember: Jazz is freedom! This version is a bit different from the original. It is more jazzy than the original version. Nevertheless, it is well done. I like very much this version as much as the one sung by Elis Regina. Jazz is freedom!

  • she destroyed it

  • Not a fan. Far too fast.

  • Dreadful! Dreadful! Horrible! Pathetic! She completely missed the whole point of the song. One is in fact allowed to re-interpret a song in one's manner, ok, but please, there are limits for it. Next time she'll probably sing in a polka version... Pfiu

  • nao gostei desse exagero todo no final!!!

  • She is indeed a beautiful lady, but I think that she should stick to the more general line of songs.

She certainly made a mess of this Jobim masterpiece. I cannot imagine that she had ever heard the Elis version, or she would not have attempted this sad "be bop" version. Thank you/Obrigado Elis and Tom.

  • she destroys it, esp at the end. She doesn't get it.

  • Go see Oscar Castro Neves play and sing this song on youtube.

  • Love her, she has a great voice and she's a beautiful woman.

  • se mueve y gestua como gal costa le falta personalidad y se nota nerviosismo en su tono -me gusto esas terceras abajo de la melodia -

  • como? pero si es Jane Monehiet, perdón pero no es ninguna improvisada.

  • não gostei...

  • It`s a pearl of Tom Jobim.Great!

  • nope. she doesn't get it.

  • wow this is really good. i love her voice and she is like perfect!!! love it <3

  • Elis is great. One of the largest in the world. And waters of March and only so many songs in her voice

  • listen mati caspi aguas de marzo in my channel - its bossa not jazz . its balanco not tecnica tecnica great tecnica , how about the feeling . in my channel the lesson for guitar

  • Her version made me fall in love with the song :o)

  • The Elis Regina Version is much better with perfect arrangements. It is like to remake songs of Edith Piaf or Sinatra..

  • The Best version is from Elis Regina.

  • I am a lover of Brazillian culture having lived in Sao Paulo for quite sometime, but I think that this version is way better than Elis Reginas. That is coming from a professional musician and former Brazillian citizen!!

  • Please, this is so tacky! The Elis/Jobin version is timeless.

  • Unfortunately for you I am allowed my own opinion. And who the heck cares what you think!!!!

  • It's not that bad but sounds like something you'd hear on a package cruise. There is no way you can honestly compare this to Elis' if you have a heart it's not even close.

  • Look, it is just my opinion as a musician, I like this one better. Monheit is a BRILLIANT vocalist!!! No big deal!!

  • Monheit sucks...and she's as big as a house, like Aretha

  • poop

  • If you want to hear a great rendition of this song, listen to Kim Scanlon's from Night Songs and Lullabies, arranged by Cary Black.

  • She sings this way too fast

  • The version of Stacey Kent is far best here.

  • Jane nails this - one of my favorites. I just listened to an Art Garfunkel version, and he totally misses the point of the song - yuck! Jane, you can do no wrong! I could listen to this over and over (oh yeah, I do!).

  • What a great song & she does such a wonderfull

    job.

My wife says you can look, but don't touch.

  • Bravo! Great tune and great interpretation by Jane! She certainly has a flair for brazillian music and it shows!

  • Thanks Have gotten her DVD too.

Would love to see her in person as she is very easy on the eyes too.

  • She is a good singer. But after watching the perfection of Elis Regina performing it, it's really hard to hear it in another way.

Check Elis's version in portuguese. That is perfect.

  • joao gilberto's version is my favorite

  • I think it is perfect!

  • Agreed! Check her LIVE performances! They are pretty awesome! Jane and her band are such accomplished tight musicians! They perform well.

  • I don't like this version of the song.. way to fast..

  • It SUCKS...and i´m not even from brasil...The Jobim version is soooooooooooooooooo great :)

  • bad song!

  • Is it just me or do others agree that it sounds awful in english?? I think that there are songs that should never be translated, and "Águas de Março" is one of them.

  • Etarnamente elis....

  • It's hard to listen to her after Elis

  • Wow... I think she's really good. Has the whole package. I do like Cassandre Wilson's version too! and my original version was by Brasil '88.

  • I always regarded the english version as very inferior to the original portuguese...

... however this could change my mind. This girl is superb.

  • This is an awesome composition and I've seen various renditions offered at different tempos. Jane's version is unique, but takes some fairly drastic departures from both the basic meter, harmony and chord changes. I agree that she should not be compared to Elis, but if Jane sang this song "straight" she'd be able to easily be in the same caliber.

  • Her album version doesn't sound so rushed.

  • I think in english its a little bit weird.

  • Folks, like whomever fits you. It is such a beautiful song Slim Whitman have a fine version. You must admit this kid has talent..lots of it

  • I love this version. I think Jane does this song so well. One of my very favorite jazz singers!

  • You have to be on the top of your game to even try to pull this song off. It's got to be one of the hardest songs to do. And she hits it!!!

  • Awesome! I'm a big fan of Jobim's music and she does justice to this song with her great voice. I'm sure Tom may be smiling from heaven after hearing this. Thanks for sharing.

  • Perfect, doesn't falls behind Jobim's version at all

  • If they are words above excellence, perhaps bliss, I don't have these words...beautiful..thank you for sharing this...Jane Monheit an angel

  • This is one of the hardest songs to sing. Jane does a wonderful job singing this.

  • I kind of have mixed feelings about Jane's version...She's a terrific beautiful singer, although I think she does No More Blues much better.

As far as the tempo, Oscar Castro Neves does the best version of this song, and his is about the same quick tempo.

BTW - Tom Jobim wrote the English lyrics as well as the Portugese for the song as well, and I think both are amazing

  • I LOVE IT THIS FAST, so bite me! Everyone puts their own spin on songs so get over it.

  • not bad, but a hair too fast. This tune should just groove. A little on the edge at the tempo she takes it.

  • eu prefiro a versao brasileira^^

    i prefer the brazilian version

  • I have to agree with rideus on this one--Elis kicked butt.

Monheit's version was too "American Idol" sounding; Jane's version, like all of her renditions of jass standards sound "canned" and "contrived." I respects Jane's efforts in bring jazz to a new generation, but let's not forget to SWING!!

    Tess

  • she doesnt suck

you try to sing this song

  • weak voice

  • It was SHIT.Elis forever

  • It's english, i love elis she was one of the greatest brazilian singer or the greatest. you should not compare elis and Jane, though. Jane does a good job in this version.

  • Ficou bom!

    Versão interessante!

  • ffs, all of you complaining, I'd like to see how well you can sing, or play piano, or bass, or anything. Musically and musician wise they did a fantastic job. I guess taste is taste, but I've heard much worse songs in my lifetime.

  • Yeah she did suck the Bossa Nova out of it... she pretty much killed the song. Tempo's too fast, and she hasn't got the right voice for it!

  • Gostei da música, mas a versão brasileira é muito melhor!!!

I liked the way she did it, but the brazillian's is better. No doubt

  • Very nice job, but I think Susannah McCorkle has the definitive version. Also, I LOVE Mark Murphy's version.

  • First time I heard her version of this i didn't like i
