One of the most memorable endings in cinema history. I do not care what anybody says- the original is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy better than that horrible remake. Gregory Peck and the man who played Carl Buckinghagan made this movie for me. Funny I watched this movie when I was 7years old. The kid in the new one just cannot equal then young Harvey Stephens role as Damien.
I think what Richard Donner did to make Harvey Stephens smile really worked. For that alone, if I was looking for someone to direct a film, I'd hire him
@ChrisMagoo99 dunno, I watched original again few days ago and it got me laughing... i think thats cuz im 17 and i do not get old movies.. for example i just laugh at their acting. imo remake is really better
@HumanitySector well, the acting style was just different back then. today, people would consider their acting "over-dramatic". it's all pretty much preference- whether you like that extra touch of dramatic flair or not
@HumanitySector No way, this Damien is supposed to look as sweet and innocent as possible so that no one would ever think he was the antichrist. With the other kid i could tell in like 5 seconds.
A truly wonderful movie. My personal 2nd favourite horror movie of all time! Used to scare the hell out of me when I was 7 or 8 years old..I have just read the book and recommend it strongly. It goes into more detail about 'the birth'. Makes me feel totally sick to think that this movie was remade....
The two coffins must be Ambassador Thorn and his wife Cathy. The Ambassador's wife would have died in the fall from the London hospital window not too long before the Ambassador's death. Mrs. Baylock wouldn't be accorded a funeral involving official US protocol. But,then again, with some of the cock-eyed injustices which prevail, maybe Robert Thorn did cop the final posthumous indignity of being laid to rest with Mrs. Baylock. If so,then Father Brennan was right in that he'd see Mr. Thorn in Hell.
The two coffins are Robert Thorn and his wife,Cathy. because in the opening scene of "Damien:Omen 2" Karl Bugenhagen hands newspapers to a certain 'Micheal',who opens to the front page of one of these newspapers, and the headline reads "American Ambassador and wife buried..."
The first time I saw Damien smile at this final scene, it scared the hell out of me.

The remake failed. Damien is supposed to be a NORMAL kid that has no idea of his evil destiny, not a creepy bastard.

I'm glad I heard this commentary. Hearing Richard Donner tell Harvey not to smile makes me able to watch the movie without being so scared.

The actor who plays Damien in the remake tries too hard to be creepy, the original is MUCH better

I think that Damien in the remake was way cuter, but also kind-of creepier, but in a good way XD
I much prefer the new version.

the remake was awful and one think i hate in both movies the ending fucking cliff hanger but good movie

Damien in remake acts way better and he is waaaay more scarier
HumanitySector 1 year ago
@HumanitySector that's exactly why he's 10x worse. Damien is basically just a regular kid. He's not some creepy kid like he is in the remake.

@HumanitySector age has nothing to do with it.
The acting is better in the old one. Gregory Peck is a legend.

I don't understand; why are there two coffins if only the father died? Unless the other one is Mrs. Baylock's?
TheLadyYuki 3 years ago
The other coffin contains Katherine Thorn, Damien's "mother."

Oh, OK. Thanks :)

It's worth it to get the DVD just for the commentary. Raposofan had it right, Richard Donner was great in it.

Damien in the remake wasn't scary because it was overused makeup. The kid in the original was real and creepy!

The child, imho, is less evil than the kid in the remake.
grievous84 4 years ago
you mean he looks less evil? or he is less evil? :)
i think he really looks less evil than the new one. but it's basically the make-up.
